Bob Wolfrum-Wyomissing

The Spartans took on Scranton Prep on Saturday afternoon in a battle of undefeated teams at Gov. Mifflin. The winner would move on to the Class 3A state semifinals. The loser’s season would be over. Bob Wolfrum emphasized to his players in the locker room at halftime that they were getting the football and he wanted to, at the very least, take time off the clock. The Spartans didn’t let their legendary coach down. They marched 66 yards on twelve plays and took a 28-7 lead on Tommy Grabowski’s 2-yard run. That vintage Wing-T drive took six and a-half minutes off the clock. Wolfrum told me possessions like that can demoralize an opponent. Wyomissing cruised to a 35-14 victory. The (14-0) Spartans ran the rock 55 times for 319 yards. They didn’t attempt a pass. Wolfrum admitted that he was surprised at how easily the Spartans were able to move the ball. He said the jet sweep was a big key to their ground attack. Wyomissing dominated on defense as well. District 2 champ Scranton Prep managed just 84 yards through three quarters and 40 of that came on a fake punt. 6’4, 220-pound senior Aiden Mack picked up two sacks for negative 16 yards. Mack is headed to Richmond to play tight end. Cavaliers’ speedy running back London Montgomery left the game after one series. Wolfrum knows that was a huge loss for the (11-1) Cavaliers. Montgomery was averaging twelve yards per carry. The 190-pound junior came into the state quarterfinals with 2,353 rushing yards and 35TD this year. Drew Eisenhower finished with 133 yards and 2TD on 14 carries for the Spartans. Grabowski added 61 yards and two scores. Amory Thompson had 64 yards including an 18-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. I asked Wolfrum how the coaching staff keeps the team focused after so many blowouts. According to Wolfrum, that’s not an issue. He likes the work ethic of the 43 players on the roster. Wolfrum is (336-85-1) over 35 seasons at Wyomissing. He has the second-most wins among active coaches in Pennsylvania. The Spartans will face District 12 champion Neumann-Goretti in the state semifinals.
