Wyomissing extended its winning streak to four with a 56-8 rout of Daniel Boone on Saturday. The (4-2, 4-0) Spartans scored on their first six possessions. They led the (2-5, 1-3) Blazers 42-0 at halftime. Brady Focht provided three touchdowns. The 6’2, 175-pound junior caught a 76-yard TD pass and returned an interception 78 yards for a score. “He’s a great player. He’s gonna be a big problem next year. He did a good job,” said Zander Westwood.
Daniel Boone fumbled on the first play from scrimmage. Andrew DiFabrizio delivered the hit and Focht recovered the ball at the Blazers’ 28-yard line. Westwood took a sweep to the right and cruised 15 yards for a touchdown just two minutes into the game. Brady Eisenhower made it 14-0 by throwing a perfect deep ball down the left sideline to Focht with 7:38 left in the first quarter. While Wyomissing is well known for its Wing-T ground attack under legendary coach Bob Wolfrum, Eisenhower is a very capable passer. “It helps a lot. Now we run motions and throw the ball. It makes our offense way more dangerous,” noted Westwood. Eisenhower finished 4-of-4 for 144 yards. The Spartans piled up 381 total yards. They have put up 190 points in their last four contests.
After a 25-yard completion to DiFabrizio, Eisenhower kept the ball on a 14-yard TD run less than a minute into the second quarter. Westwood’s 34-yard TD run increased Wyomissing’s cushion to 28-0 with 5:24 remaining in the first half. One minute later, Daniel Boone had a bad snap while trying to punt. Focht scooped up the loose ball and went eleven yards for a touchdown. His third score of the day came with 41 seconds to go before halftime. Focht stepped in front of Dominic Stoudt’s pass along the right sideline. He cut across the entire field for a 78-yard pick 6.
The Spartans began the third quarter with a 65-yard drive. Sophomore Nehzion Carter capped it off with a 30-yard TD run. Carter then recovered a fumble at the Blazers’ 8-yard line. Levi Rohrer took it from there. His touchdown run put Wyomissing in front 56-0 with 1:41 to play in the third period. Daniel Boone got on the scoreboard with 9:33 on the clock. Sophomore Mason Murphy broke free on a 20-yard touchdown run. Freshman quarterback John Burmester added a two-point conversion.
The Spartans opened the season with a pair of challenging non-league games. They lost 34-27 at Southern Columbia and 42-14 to Twin Valley. Those teams are (13-1) combined this fall. “It helped us a lot. It made us a lot tougher and more physical,” emphasized Westwood. The 6’3, 225-pound linebacker can squat 500 pounds. He has offers from New Haven, Stonehill, Albany, and Stony Brook. Westwood ran the ball three times for 59 yards and made six tackles on Saturday. Stoudt was limited to 44 yards on twelve carries. He was 2-of-9 for 13 yards through the air.
The Spartans have captured a dozen District 3 championships. They’re currently second in the District 3-3A power rankings behind Schuylkill Valley. Wyomissing is ahead of Hamburg, Trinity, and Berks Catholic. Only the top four teams in Class 3A will qualify for the playoffs this year. “In my opinion, I think we’re the best in the district. I think we’re gonna go really far,” remarked Westwood.
