You can’t ask for a much better quarterfinal matchup than the one coming up this weekend in Shillington. Two of the top three Class 3A teams in the state are squaring off and both are undefeated! The Spartans are #2 in the latest PennLive poll. The Cavaliers are #3. Wyomissing averages 46 points per game and gives up eight. Scranton Prep puts up 42 points a night while allowing just under ten. The Spartans blew out Boiling Springs 55-14 last week for their tenth District 3 championship and third in a row. They scored touchdowns on eight of their last nine drives. Tommy Grabowski finished with 184 yards and 3TD on twenty carries. The 200-pound senior FB/LB is just shy of 1,200 yards this season. He’s second in Berks County with 23TD; seven of those scores came in Wyomissing’s three District 3 playoff games. The Spartans have a trio of elusive halfbacks in Amory Thompson, Drew Eisenhower, and Charlie McIntyre. They’ve combined for 1,770 rushing yards. Each averages between 7.5 and 9 yards per carry. The offensive line continues to improve. That unit features 6’4, 310-pound junior Jven Williams who can play guard or tackle. He has numerous Division I offers including Penn State. Richmond commit Aiden Mack gives head coach Bob Wolfrum a devastating blocker at TE. Wolfrum is (335-85-1) over 35 seasons with the Spartans. Neither team throws the ball very much. Considering their success in the running game, why would you? Scranton Prep only attempts five passes per game. The Cavaliers rely on speedy running back London Montgomery who recently picked up an offer from Arizona State. The 5’11, 190-pound junior runs the 100 meters in under eleven seconds. Montgomery has put together a monster season with 2,353 rushing yards and 35TD. He piled up 200 yards and a score on 32 carries in the District 2 championship vs. Wyoming Area. The Cavaliers forced four turnovers, allowed 124 total yards, and prevailed 28-0. Montgomery runs behind an experienced OL that averages 256 pounds. Scranton Prep has only had one close game; a 17-10 victory over Valley View in late October. Valley View is (12-1) and ranked #6 in the state in Class 4A. When 5’7, 150-pound QB Sean Monahan does throw, he looks for 6’4 senior Rob Rossi. The 195-pound WR/DB has 24 catches for 576 yards and 9TD. No one else on the team has more than three receptions. Rossi had a 37-yard TD grab and a 42-yard Pick 6 in the District 2 Final. The Cavaliers haven’t seen much of the Wing-T offense this season. How their linebackers handle the misdirection plays could be a key factor against Wyomissing.
