Sydney Corado-Berks Catholic

Sydney Corado says she’s more focused now than earlier this season. It certainly looked like that on Friday night at Lloyd Wolf Gymnasium. The 5’10 sophomore scored nine points in the first quarter of Berks Catholic’s 54-40 victory over Gov. Mifflin. Corado finished with a career-high 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Saints wrapped up the Division 1 championship. They raced out to a 13-0 advantage over the (10-11, 8-3) Mustangs. Caraline Herb reached 1,000 points with a layup three minutes into the game. Herb ended up with a dozen points to bring her career total to 1,009. The 5’7 Chestnut Hill commit has 201 3-pointers including 52 this season. Gov. Mifflin opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run to pull within 18-17. Six of Taylor Koenig’s ten points came in that period. The 5’7 junior guard was playing in her eighth game since returning from knee surgery. The Mustangs trailed 26-20 at the break. Herb started the second half with back-to-back layups. Madison Langdon’s three-point play extended the lead to 33-20 with 4:50 remaining in the third quarter. The 5’3 point guard contributed 15 points. Gov. Mifflin went scoreless for nearly three and a-half minutes. The (16-5, 11-0) Saints hit eight of their twelve free throws in the final period. They limited the Mustangs to nine points over the last eight minutes. Shakyla Mayo, an all-county guard, had a game-high 16 points. Her buzzer-beating layup knocked out Berks Catholic in the county semifinals last year at Santander Arena. “It motivates our team 100%. Every time we play them it’s like we need a win,” emphasized Corado. Molly McFadden (7 points), Corado, and Langdon have been in Bob Birmingham’s starting lineup all season as sophomores. “There’s so much potential, sky’s the limit with us. We all have great team chemistry too,” remarked Corado. She’s dropped 41 points in the last three games. The Saints have won eleven of their last twelve contests. I asked Corado who the top team in Berks County is as the playoffs approach. She replied, “I think we’re No. 1.” We also talked about her favorite teacher at Berks Catholic, and what music she listens to before games. Corado is looking forward to the new season of ‘Outer Banks’ on Netflix. I attempted to get a Super Bowl prediction from her, but she joked that she didn’t want to comment because she’s a Steelers fan.
