We’re down to two. Only a pair of schools are still dancing in the District 3 playoffs. I shuffled the deck and have a new order for the top four teams in my poll. Wyomissing and Twin Valley took one step forward after blowout victories. Meanwhile, Wilson and Exeter dropped one spot. Here are my Berks County high school football rankings as we enter the third week of the postseason. Remember that no matter where your favorite team is ranked, the sun will come out tomorrow!
Wyomissing dominated Schuylkill Valley 48-0 in the District 3-3A semifinals. The top-seeded Spartans return to Bob Wolfrum Field this Saturday. They battle third-seeded West Perry at 1pm. These programs squared off in the championship game last year with Wyomissing rolling to a 63-7 win. The Spartans are trying to pull off a five-peat and history is on their side. They’re (19-0) all-time in home playoff games. The (11-1) Mustangs are searching for their first District 3 title. This is their third appearance in the finals. West Perry put up 42 points against Bermudian Springs in the quarterfinals and 49 points last week at Lancaster Catholic.
Wilson’s season ended with a 20-14 loss at Cumberland Valley, but the streak is still alive. The Bulldogs own the current state record with 48 consecutive winning seasons. Wilson was outgained on the ground 145-35 by the (7-4) Eagles in the District 3-6A quarterfinals. Twin Valley advanced to the Class 4A semifinals by hammering #7 seed ELCO 35-7. The Raiders host third-seeded Manheim Central this Friday night. The (10-1) Barons have claimed a record 18 District 3 titles. Their overall record in the tournament is (62-16). Manheim Central has scored over 40 points in seven straight contests. Twin Valley is trying to reach the finals for the first time.
Schuylkill Valley set a school record for wins this season. The Panthers advanced to the District 3 semifinals for just the second time. They fell to Wyomissing in 2012 as well. Schuylkill Valley will be a team to watch in 2024 with several key players returning.
