As a sophomore at Berks Catholic, Matt Harley made 68 three-pointers and was an All-Division selection. Harley is now a senior at Gov. Mifflin and proving that he’s not just a threat from behind the arc. His driving basket off the glass with seven seconds left gave the Mustangs a thrilling 54-52 victory over rival Wilson. Gov. Mifflin ended a 9-game losing streak to the Bulldogs. Harley finished with a game-high 22 points. The 6’5 forward poured in 14 in the fourth quarter. The (2-1) Mustangs trailed 46-38 with five minutes remaining. Harley hit four of his team’s ten three-pointers. The biggest one came from an unlikely source. Tyler Minick drilled a tying three from the right corner with 40 seconds left. It was the first three-pointer of the season for Minick. The junior guard is committed to UConn for baseball. Gerrell McNeil added 15 points. The 6’2 junior made three 3’s in the first quarter. Gov. Mifflin was up 13-12 after a quarter and 22-20 at halftime. The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 7-0 run and led 39-36 after the third quarter. Cleveland Harding had a career-high 19 points. The junior guard missed a jumper from the right wing at the buzzer. Foday Sillah contributed 14 points and Cam Jones had nine. Jones, Harding, Sillah, and Ofure Odiale each finished the game with four fouls. The Mustangs struggled at the free throw line. They ended up 12-20. Wilson was 6-10. Harley said Gerrell McNeil kept them in the game in the first half. We talked about his go-ahead shot. Harley replied, “I never had a feeling like that before!” He put in a lot of work in the offseason to improve his all-around game. Harley mentioned that the fan support was tremendous. He told me that Gov. Mifflin has a good chance to win Division 1 of the Berks Conference. The Mustangs best the Bulldogs for the first time since February 13, 2017.
