Charlie McIntyre-Wyomissing

Charlie McIntyre only had twelve carries in Wyomissing’s first two games. Welcome to life in the Wing-T offense. The Spartans’ running backs share the workload and that’s just fine with McIntyre. “None of us really worry about stats. We’re just trying to win games and that’s our mentality. Just run the ball as hard as you can, and just do your job,” said McIntyre. The 180-pound senior made the most of his touches on Saturday afternoon against Trinity. McIntyre racked up 154 yards and two touchdowns on six carries. The (3-0) Spartans defeated the (1-2) Shamrocks 35-14. McIntyre set the tone on Wyomissing’s third play from scrimmage. He got a key block from senior guard Jack Gartner and burst 80 yards for a score. McIntyre knows he’s running behind an elite offensive line that includes Penn State commit Jven Williams. “After every play I thank the big guys up front because they do their job extremely well. It just makes our job incredibly easy,” he stated. The trio of Williams, senior tackle Pacen Ziegler, and junior tight end Caleb Brewer weigh in at 845 combined pounds. McIntyre was on the Spartans’ Class AA state championship Track & Field team in the spring. He raced 14 yards off the right side for a touchdown with 2:35 remaining in the first half. Trinity trailed 21-0 at the break. Wyomissing marched 66 yards on only four plays to begin the third quarter. McIntyre ran twice for 44 yards on that series. Drew Eisenhower finished it off from two yards away. The 190-pound senior moved from halfback to fullback due to injuries to Matthew Kramer and Collin Niedrowski. Kramer was in uniform, but didn’t play because of an ankle sprain. Niedrowski was out with a calf injury. Eisenhower ended up with 72 yards and two scores on eight carries. He went untouched off left tackle for a 12-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. The Spartans piled up 372 yards including 317 on the ground. They reached the end zone on their first five drives and didn’t punt until midway through the fourth quarter. The Shamrocks were limited to 203 total yards, and 58 of that came on Tanie Young’s touchdown run with 4:48 to go. By that time, Wyomissing’s backups were in the game. After a fumble by Drew Forrey, freshman Messiah Mickens scored on a 4-yard run. Mickens already has an offer from Texas A&M. The 5’10, 185-pound youngster led Trinity with 59 yards on eight carries. 6’3 junior Caleb Wray was 4-of-10 for 15 yards. He was intercepted by Drew Eisenhower in the first period. Drew’s younger brother, Chase, chipped in with 45 yards and a touchdown on six carries. He’s a 210-pound freshman who started at linebacker on Saturday. The Spartans visit Berks Catholic next week. I asked McIntyre about that rivalry. He replied, “It means everything. It’s been one of the greatest rivalries in Berks County history. Everyone is excited for it. Everyone shows up.” The Saints are the last team to beat Wyomissing in the regular season. That was back on October 27, 2018. Berks Catholic is winless this year. Meanwhile, the Spartans have outscored their three opponents 133-14. McIntyre is a Philadelphia Eagles fan and he thinks they’ll be very good this season. However, he added, “It’s a Philly team so they might always let us down.”
