Bob Wolfrum’s resume speaks for itself. 35 seasons, 335 wins, a winning percentage of 79.6%, ten District 3 championships, a state title in 2012, and only one losing year. When you’ve accomplished all of those things, you don’t need to do much talking and Wolfrum doesn’t. His message to his team after the District 3 championship game was all of five words, “Good job, see you Monday.” The longtime Wyomissing head coach told me that he has never been big on postgame speeches. The (13-0) Spartans rolled over second-seeded Boiling Springs 55-14 in the District 3-3A Final. It’s their third straight District title. I asked Wolfrum about the keys to building a successful program. Wyomissing struggled on its first two possessions against the Bubblers. (11-2) Boiling Springs came up with an INT from Carson Garvey and then forced a punt. The Spartans responded with touchdowns on eight of their last nine drives! Wolfrum decided to play more power football with Tommy Grabowski. The senior fullback ran for 185 yards and 3TD on twenty carries. That opened up everything else for the Spartans. Ben Zechman tossed TD passes to Amory Thompson (7 yards) and Aiden Mack (24 yards). Zechman was 4-6 for 90 yards. Thompson, Charlie McIntyre, and sophomore Ryker Jones added TD runs. Wolfrum complimented his offensive line for its improvement and versatility. We discussed facing an opponent that also uses the Wing-T offense. Wyomissing’s defense is allowing just eight points per game. Wolfrum said film study and the ability to communicate have been essential. The Spartans will meet unbeaten Scranton Prep in the state quarterfinals.
