#5 seed Middletown put up 35 points in the District 3-3A quarterfinals. The semifinal matchup at top-seeded Wyomissing was a different story. The Blue Raiders were completely shut down in a 14-0 loss at the A-Field. The (12-0) Spartans allowed just 48 total yards! 5’8 senior Tate Leach finished 0-for-8 with an interception. Wyomissing forced two turnovers. Amory Thompson, a three-year starter at cornerback, had a pick and Aiden Mack recovered a fumble which led to the Spartans’ first touchdown in the second quarter. Head coach Bob Wolfrum said the defense kept them in the game until the offense got on track. We talked about the 17-play, 79-yard drive to open the second half and make it 14-0. Wyomissing took eight minutes off the clock. Wolfrum told me that those vintage Wing-T drives can demoralize an opponent mentally as much as physically. Tommy Grabowski ran for 157 yards and 2TD on 28 carries. Wolfrum called the 200-pound senior FB/LB an old-school player. Middletown fullback Tajae Broadie didn’t have the same running room. The 6’4, 240-pound senior was limited to 23 yards on eight carries. Broadie has numerous Division I offers. Wolfrum explained that the Spartans didn’t do anything special to stop him. Wolfrum is (334-85-1) over 35 seasons at Wyomissing. He enjoys hard-fought games much more than mercy rule victories. The Spartans will host #2 seed Boiling Springs on Saturday afternoon in the District 3-3A championship. Wyomissing is looking for its tenth District 3 title.
