Annie McCaffrey is an All-State soccer player. She’s also a key piece to Wyomissing’s undefeated basketball team. The 5’9 forward had 14 points in a 50-42 victory over third-seeded Gov. Mifflin in the BCIAA semifinals. McCaffrey averages a modest seven points, but provides toughness, defense and leadership. She’s the type of player that teams need to win championships, and that’s exactly what the Spartans did a season ago. They captured their first Berks League and District 3 titles. The (24-0) Spartans are hoping to find more gold this year. The (15-9) Mustangs, who don’t hesitate to launch from long range, hit three triples in the opening period. It was 9-9 after eight minutes on Wednesday afternoon. Wyomissing allowed just 13 points in the middle quarters. “Our defense is what carries us through the games,” said McCaffrey. The second-seeded Spartans were on top 21-14 at halftime and 36-22 after the third period. All-State forward Amaya Stewart took control in the second half. The 6’1 junior scored 18 of her game-high 22 points after the break. “She stepped up like every single game. She’s amazing,” remarked McCaffrey. Stewart racked up eleven points in the third quarter. Gov. Mifflin didn’t go down without a fight. The Mustangs were trying to get head coach Mike Clark his 300th career win. Taylor Koenig splashed two 3-pointers in a row to pull Gov. Mifflin within 48-42 with 17 seconds left. The 5’8 senior has 138 treys in her career. Koenig, a two-time All-Division pick, provided nine of her team-high 17 points in the final period. McCaffrey sealed the deal, however, with a transition layup. She’s one of only two seniors on Wyomissing’s roster. McCaffrey is committed to UMass for soccer. She enjoys playing at Santander Arena. “We all love it. When you step in here, you feel the energy,” emphasized McCaffrey. Junior guard Alexis Hardy added eight points. The Spartans were 7-of-12 from the free throw line. They held on despite seven turnovers in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs went 4-for-8 from the stripe and connected eight times from beyond the arc. Freshman Bella Super had 16 points including nine in the last eight minutes. Wyomissing will take on top-seeded Wilson in Friday’s BCIAA championship. The Bulldogs are (23-1). That highly anticipated matchup begins at 6pm.
