Six of the eight teams in my poll won last week. The top four remains the same, but there are a few changes. Muhlenberg moved up one spot and Berks Catholic climbed two positions. Conrad Weiser fell from #5 to #8 after its 20-7 loss at Manheim Central. The second half of the schedule will be tougher for the Scouts.
It should be noted that this poll is based solely upon results from this year. For example, Gov. Mifflin had won 21 straight games against Muhlenberg entering Friday’s matchup in Laureldale. The Mustangs, however, were one spot behind the Muhls in last week’s rankings. I believed that Muhlenberg was playing better and healthier than Gov. Mifflin at this point in the season. The Muhls defeated the Mustangs 35-17 to stay unbeaten.
Exeter, Wyomissing, and Twin Valley are still perfect as well. The Eagles travel to Ephrata this week. The (4-1) Mounts only loss came against Conestoga Valley 31-7.
The Spartans meet Donegal at Bob Wolfrum Field on Saturday afternoon. The Indians are (2-3). Meanwhile, Twin Valley takes on Northern Lebanon this Friday in Elverson. The (1-4) Vikings have dropped four in a row.
Wilson and Gov. Mifflin square off for the 68th time on Friday at John Gurski Stadium. The Bulldogs lead the series (40-27). Wilson has taken 11 of the past 14 meetings. The Mustangs are dealing with injuries to several starters. The Bulldogs beat them 43-20 last year.
Muhlenberg hosts Elizabethtown in Week 6. The (3-2) Bears stumbled against Ephrata 20-14 last week.
Berks Catholic has won three of its last four contests. The Saints battle Schuylkill Valley in Leesport on Friday. Both teams are (2-0) in the Section 5 standings. The Panthers won 20-14 at Berks Catholic a season ago.
Conrad Weiser makes the trip to Solanco this week. The Golden Mules are riding a four-game winning streak. They lost their opener to Lampeter-Strasburg 45-44 in overtime. All-State running back Johnny Garcia has rumbled for 707 yards and nine touchdowns this year.
Without further ado, here is this week’s poll. Remember that no matter where your favorite team is ranked, the sun will come out tomorrow!
