Here are my Berks County high school football rankings at the midpoint of the season. The top seven teams in my poll all won last week. Remember that no matter where your favorite team is ranked, the sun will come out tomorrow!
Wyomissing extended its regular season winning streak to 40 with a 28-14 victory over previously unbeaten ELCO. The Spartans host Donegal this Saturday afternoon. The (2-3) Indians are coming off a 19-16 loss to Berks Catholic. The Wilson at Cedar Crest matchup was a good example of why you shouldn’t just look at records when evaluating teams. I dig deeper than that by factoring in strength of schedule, injuries, etc. The Bulldogs handed the Falcons their first loss of the season 21-13. Wilson returns to West Lawn to face rival Gov. Mifflin. The Bulldogs lead the series (38-27). I’ll be at John Gurski Stadium on Friday night.
Exeter travels to Warwick this week. The Warriors have dropped four in a row after surprising Cocalico 17-14 in their opener. Twin Valley is on the road against Solanco. The Golden Mules lost 26 seniors from last year’s (11-1) squad. They’re now (1-4). Berks Catholic meets Conrad Weiser in Robesonia on Friday. The Scouts picked up their first win last week. They knocked off Octorara 21-6. Schuylkill Valley battles Northern Lebanon in Leesport. The Panthers are riding a 4-game winning streak. The Vikings are (2-3).
Fleetwood is back in my poll at #8. That’s the only change this week. The Tigers have an early wake-up call on Saturday. They visit (2-3) Kennard-Dale at 10am. Hamburg falls out of my rankings after losing 35-34 at Kutztown. It’s the Cougars’ first victory over a Berks County school since 2016 when they edged Fleetwood 21-20. The (3-2) Hawks host undefeated Lancaster Catholic on Friday.
