Xzavion Robertson-Muhlenberg

When you talk with the Muhlenberg basketball players, it’s no surprise that Matt Flowers was named Berks County Coach of the Year last season. “It’s more than basketball for him. It’s more caring, he loves you. He treats you like his own son. He changed the whole environment. It’s like a family, a brotherhood,” said senior Xzavion Robertson. The Muhls went (18-7, 9-2) and won the Division 2 championship. They ended a 32-game losing streak to Reading with a thrilling 63-61 victory in Laureldale on February 8th. “We felt like we won State’s. After the game, everybody started rushing the court. It was an unbelievable feeling,” exclaimed Robertson. The 5’10 guard scored 44 points in Muhlenberg’s first three games. The Muhls opened last season with five straight wins. Robertson dropped a career-high 28 points on Dieruff on January 10th. He was in double figures eleven times. The lefty hit five 3-pointers against Fleetwood in the Berks County quarterfinals. Muhlenberg blew out the Tigers 70-48 before falling to eventual champ Reading 70-54 in the semifinals. The Muhls lost a heartbreaker at fifth-seeded Cedar Cliff in the first round of the District 3-6A playoffs. Tyler Houser sank two free throws with six seconds remaining for a 55-54 victory. Muhlenberg will miss 6’6 forward Edwin Suarez who averaged 19 points and 15 rebounds last season. Robertson is expecting 6’4 senior Josh Alcantara and 230-pound senior Mekhi Adonis to step up. “I feel like our whole team can score. Our whole team can play defense so it’s gonna be exciting this year…I have high expectations for this team,” replied Robertson. “Dan Dan” Mosquera, Kyle Archie, Eric Branch, and Luis Valentin return along with promising freshman Mike Miller. Mosquera was the Muhls’ second-leading scorer at 9 points per game. The 5’5 senior guard knocked down 32 triples to lead the squad. Robertson provided 8.6 ppg. and connected 23 times from beyond the arc. I asked him what he has improved on from last season. “My defense and being more vocal, talking to my teammates,” he answered. We also talked about his favorite teachers, musical artists, and sneakers. Muhlenberg has moved from Division 1 to Division 2 in the BCIAA. The Muhls also dropped from Class 6A to 5A in District 3. They open the season at the Manheim Township tip-off tournament.
