The Spartans may have lost five all-state selections to graduation, but there’s still plenty of talent at Wyomissing. If you’re not sure, just ask the Kennard-Dale Rams. They fell behind 21-0 in less than ten minutes on Saturday afternoon. Wyomissing outgained Kennard-Dale 407-73 in a 49-0 victory. Senior HB/S Drew Eisenhower noted that their preseason scrimmage at North Penn was very beneficial. “I think it was a great scrimmage for us, especially how big they are. They’re a really good team. I think going out and competing with them made us better. I know that for a fact,” he said. Matt Kramer had all three touchdown runs in the first quarter. “He’s very fast, very hard runner. He can lower the shoulder, lower the boom. He’s gonna do big things for us this year,” Eisenhower raved. Kramer, a 215-pound senior FB/OLB, finished with a team-high 68 yards on seven carries. Eisenhower’s 39-yard touchdown catch from Ben Zechman made it 35-0 with 9:50 remaining in the third quarter. “We’ve grown up together and we’ve always thrown together. We have great chemistry. Everyone on the team does. We’re all very, very close to each other,” said Eisenhower. Zechman was 5-of-8 for 128 yards and a score. Eisenhower stressed that having the ability to throw is important. He replied, “It would be a huge step for us. I know teams are gonna expect the run. If we can hit them with a play-action pass, it’s gonna be a big play for us.” The Spartans’ Wing-T attack racked up 279 rushing yards against Kennard-Dale. Eisenhower chipped in with 46 yards on three carries. His brother, Chase, added 27 yards and a 4-yard TD blast early in the fourth quarter. Chase is only a freshman, but he’s already taller than Drew. “I’m happy to play with him. We get along great. We always do everything together outside of sports so we’re really close,” Drew Eisenhower stated. Chase is a 210-pound fullback with a bright future. Drew joked that he can win their wrestling matches now, however, that may change in a few months. Their father, Chad, is a member of the Wyomissing Football Association Hall of Fame. Charlie McIntyre (4 carries/41 yards) broke off a 23-yard touchdown run with one minute left in the first half. Sophomore Derek Macrina (3 carries/49 yards) provided an interception and a 7-yard touchdown run. Junior safety Logan Hyde picked off Garrett McCleary’s pass on the first play from scrimmage. That was one of three turnovers forced by Wyomissing. Eisenhower enjoys playing games on Saturday. “They’re the best. The whole team loves it. We wouldn’t trade anything [in] the world to do this. Nothing is better than that,” he responded. The Spartans return five starters on offense and three on defense from last year’s (15-1) squad. I asked Eisenhower if they can be even better in 2022. He said, “We do have the potential to be, but we’ve just got to keep progressing every game; just take it one game at a time and hopefully, at the end of the year, we’ll see if we can be better.” Wyomissing has gone (36-3) over the past three seasons with three straight District 3 titles. The Spartans lost to Central Valley in the last two Class 3A state finals. They won’t be meeting again because Central Valley was bumped up to Class 4A. Eisenhower also discussed their upcoming road game versus Pottsville and his favorite teacher.
