High School Football Notebook

High School football is back! The 2022 season kicks off tonight. Here are a few tidbits on the 15 teams in Berks County.

Berks Catholic: The Saints have put together 11 straight winning seasons. Rick Keeley is entering his 37th season as a head football coach, a Berks County record.

Boyertown: The Bears have a new head coach in Justin Konnick. The 1997 Boyertown graduate also coaches the Bears’ Legion baseball team.

Conrad Weiser: Alan Moyer is the winningest coach in Scouts’ history (133-80). Conrad Weiser has had 13 winning seasons over the past 15 years.

Daniel Boone: Last year was the Blazers first appearance in the District 3 playoffs since 2014. Head coach Rob Flowers was the AIFA Offensive Player of the Year in 2009 when he led the Reading Express to a championship.

Exeter: The Eagles had lost 15 of their previous 16 meetings with Gov. Mifflin before beating the Mustangs 31-28 in last year’s District 3-5A championship. Exeter is riding a streak of 11 consecutive winning seasons.

Fleetwood: The Tigers won 5 out of 6 games to end last season including an Eastern Conference championship. Steve Pangburn makes the switch from offensive coordinator to head coach.

Gov. Mifflin: The Mustangs have made 16 trips in a row to the District 3 playoffs. They won 66 of their last 68 league games in the Berks Football League.

Hamburg: The Hawks picked up their first victory in the District 3 playoffs last year. 2001 Hamburg grad and former assistant Matt Hoffert is now the head coach on Hawk Hill.

Kutztown: The Cougars have 36 players on their roster and only 2 seniors. In Week 9 of last season, Kutztown had just 18 players in uniform at Conrad Weiser.

Muhlenberg: The Muhls snapped a 26-game game losing skid with a 38-6 win over Reading in the 2021 season finale. Muhlenberg is making the move to the Wing-T offense this year.

Reading: The Red Knights have 62 players on the roster including 21 sophomores. First-year head coach Troy Godinet was an all-county LB for Reading in 2003.

Schuylkill Valley: The Panthers return 9 starters on offense and 8 on defense. Head coach Bruce Harbach won 2 state championships, 4 District 3 titles, and 8 Section crowns at Lancaster Catholic. He’ll get a shot at his former team in the revamped Section 5 of the L-L League.

Twin Valley: The Raiders are coming off their first appearance in the District 3 tournament. Brett Myers takes over as head coach. He led Middletown to District 3 titles from 2016-18.

Wilson: The Bulldogs own the current state record with 46 straight winning seasons. Doug Dahms has the best winning percentage in Berks County history (83%). Wilson has won 14 consecutive league games.

Wyomissing: Bob Wolfrum is second among active head coaches in Pennsylvania with 337 career victories. The Spartans haven’t been defeated in a regular season game since Oct. 27, 2018 vs. Berks Catholic. Wyomissing has captured three District 3 championships in a row.
