Ty Barreto-Berks Catholic

Ty Barreto wasn’t able to help his teammates during the District 3-4A playoffs last year. The Saints’ center suffered a fractured tibia in his right leg against Exeter in mid-October. He missed the rest of the season. Barreto is back on the practice field and feeling better than ever. The 6’1 senior who also plays defensive tackle has slimmed down to 215 pounds. He’s not sure how he has lost weight. Barreto joked that he’s still eating fast food all the time. Berks Catholic returns four starters on the offensive line. That group averages 254 pounds and includes 6’3, 300-pound tackle Jacob Collazo. The Saints love to run the rock in their Wing-T offense. They averaged 39 carries and just five pass attempts per game in 2021. Berks Catholic piled up 233.5 rushing yards a night last year. JayJay Jordan is preparing for his senior campaign after rushing for 807 yards and 11TD a season ago. Barreto said, “It’s nice to know that if we get our blocks done, we’re going to get paid out. He’s going to run the ball, hopefully for a touchdown.” Jordan was an all-county selection at RB and DB last year. Marvin Armistead will add speed at the halfback position, while 190-pound junior Devin Garcia will get the first shot at fullback. The Saints move from Section 1 of the Berks Football League to Section 4 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Barreto is looking forward to having Wyomissing back on their schedule. “Licking my chops; I can’t wait to play that game,” he said. Conrad Weiser, Cocalico, Lampeter-Strasburg, ELCO, Donegal, and Octorara are also part of Section 4. Berks Catholic returns five starters on offense and four on defense from a (7-5) squad that reached the District 3 semifinals before falling to Bishop McDevitt 35-7. Rick Keeley is entering his 37th season as a head coach. Barreto said, “He’s the best. He’s got the best speeches, always gets you hype no matter what.” Keeley has won 270 games in his career and five District 3 championships. Barreto also discussed his favorite teachers and classes at Berks Catholic. While Barreto plays center, he’s not a fan of Jason Kelce. Barreto admitted that he supports the Dallas Cowboys. That probably doesn’t go over well at school, but his teammates are glad to have him back in the middle of the action.
