If you’re looking for a fun topic to discuss on your drive to Hersheypark Stadium on Saturday, I have the solution. Ask your passengers who would come out on top if the 2020 Wyomissing football team faced this year’s squad. Nevin Carter can provide some great insight because he played on both teams. You’ll hear his answer to that question. Carter is a 3-year starter at cornerback for the Spartans. The 6’4, 190-pound senior was named a second team All-County DB this season. Wyomissing’s secondary held Neumann-Goretti to 1-11 passing for just 17 yards and an interception in the state semifinals. The (15-0) Spartans rolled over the Saints 42-6. Carter described what it was like seeing Penn State head coach James Franklin at their game last week. The Nittany Lions are recruiting Wyomissing junior OL Jven Williams who is 6’4 and 310 pounds. The Spartans only allow 136 total yards per game including 47 through the air. Carter explained why the secondary has played at such a high level. He gave a lot of credit to the coaches for the time they spend studying film and preparing a game plan. “It’s insane how much we know,” he said. Wyomissing is giving up 8.5 points per game. Only Southern Columbia managed to score over 14 points against the Spartans this season. Central Valley put 35 points on the board in last year’s Class 3A state final. Carter told me that loss to the Warriors has motivated his team. We also talked about the addition of 240-pound DT/FB “J.J.” Jackson. Carter is part of the offense as well at wide receiver. Wyomissing doesn’t throw much out of its Wing-T formation. Carter has the second-most catches with nine. Plus, Carter revealed what type of music he would like to listen to on the way to Hershey. He doesn’t believe that longtime head coach Bob Wolfrum would be a fan of his musical choices, haha. The Spartans battle Central Valley for the state title at noon on Saturday. The Warriors are riding a 26-game winning streak. They beat Wyomissing 35-21 a season ago.
