Ty – Berks Sports Report https://berkssportsreport.com Paul Roberts Tue, 06 Aug 2024 17:45:22 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.7.1 Ty Werley-Hamburg https://berkssportsreport.com/ty-werley-hamburg/ Tue, 06 Aug 2024 17:39:50 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4338 The 2024 football season could be a record-setting one for Hamburg’s Ty Werley. When it comes to playing wide receiver, Werley loves to go deep. “Trying to ‘Moss’ everyone that tries guarding me,” he replied when asked about his favorite part of the game. The 6’1, 190-pound rising senior has racked up 66 receptions, 1,097 yards, and 11 touchdown catches in his career on Hawk Hill. Mason Semmel holds the school records with 1,124 receiving yards and 17 scores. The All-State tight end is a freshman at East Stroudsburg. Cohen Correll, another member of the class of 2024, finished with 81 career receptions. Werley needs just 16 catches to break that mark. Ty Shuey, one of Werley’s good friends, will once again be throwing to him. Shuey established a new single-season passing record at Hamburg last fall when he threw for 2,764 yards. The rising senior was responsible for 25 touchdowns through the air and another 13 on the ground. Shuey ran for 564 yards while completing 56% of his passes. “We play basketball together. We play a lot of video games together. We hang out all the time. We have a really good connection,” noted Werley. As for hoops, Werley averaged a team-high 13.6 points for the Hawks. Hamburg went (6-5, 3-4) last year. They missed out on the District 3 playoffs and lost 40-21 to Berks Catholic in the Eastern Conference 3A Championship. Werley, who also plays outside linebacker, is motivated to get back to the District 3 tournament. The Hawks are moving up to Class 4A this year. Hamburg graduate Matt Hoffert is entering his third season as head coach with a (15-8) record. He returns five starters on offense and seven on defense. They begin the season at home on August 23rd against Octorara.

Ty Shuey-Hamburg https://berkssportsreport.com/ty-shuey-hamburg/ Tue, 29 Aug 2023 13:58:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=3731 The bar has been raised up on Hawk Hill. Hamburg has won a District 3 playoff game in each of the past two seasons. The Hawks won nine games last year before falling at Wyomissing in the District 3-3A semifinals. Ty Shuey is hoping they can take the next step and reach the championship game in 2023. Hamburg got off to a good start by soaring past Halifax 49-19 in its opener. Shuey had a monster night in his debut at quarterback with 356 passing yards and four touchdowns. The 5’10, 175-pound junior ran for 76 yards and two more scores. Ty Werley also posted huge numbers. The 6’2, 185-pound junior made five catches for a whopping 253 yards and 3 TD. “We’ve been friends for awhile now. Back in elementary [school], we always played football together…really good friends,” said Shuey. Mason Semmel added 93 yards and a touchdown on three receptions. The athletic 6’3, 220-pound linebacker finished with a team-high eight tackles. Shuey is an all-division baseball player who also plays basketball. “It helps me keep my grades up all year,” he noted. His older brother, Hunter, was an all-county pitcher for the Hawks. The 6’3 righty is at UNC Greensboro. Hamburg ended up tied for second place in Section 5 of the new Lancaster-Lebanon League a season ago. The Hawks were (5-2) in league contests. Shuey replied, “It’s fun changing it up, playing new schools.” Lancaster Catholic ran the table in Section 5 last fall. Shuey admitted that he’s a Seahawks’ fan, but he likes watching Jalen Hurts and Trevor Lawrence. Hamburg hits the road this Friday to battle Warrior Run.

Ty Barreto-Berks Catholic https://berkssportsreport.com/ty-barreto-berks-catholic/ Mon, 08 Aug 2022 19:19:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=2835 Ty Barreto wasn’t able to help his teammates during the District 3-4A playoffs last year. The Saints’ center suffered a fractured tibia in his right leg against Exeter in mid-October. He missed the rest of the season. Barreto is back on the practice field and feeling better than ever. The 6’1 senior who also plays defensive tackle has slimmed down to 215 pounds. He’s not sure how he has lost weight. Barreto joked that he’s still eating fast food all the time. Berks Catholic returns four starters on the offensive line. That group averages 254 pounds and includes 6’3, 300-pound tackle Jacob Collazo. The Saints love to run the rock in their Wing-T offense. They averaged 39 carries and just five pass attempts per game in 2021. Berks Catholic piled up 233.5 rushing yards a night last year. JayJay Jordan is preparing for his senior campaign after rushing for 807 yards and 11TD a season ago. Barreto said, “It’s nice to know that if we get our blocks done, we’re going to get paid out. He’s going to run the ball, hopefully for a touchdown.” Jordan was an all-county selection at RB and DB last year. Marvin Armistead will add speed at the halfback position, while 190-pound junior Devin Garcia will get the first shot at fullback. The Saints move from Section 1 of the Berks Football League to Section 4 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Barreto is looking forward to having Wyomissing back on their schedule. “Licking my chops; I can’t wait to play that game,” he said. Conrad Weiser, Cocalico, Lampeter-Strasburg, ELCO, Donegal, and Octorara are also part of Section 4. Berks Catholic returns five starters on offense and four on defense from a (7-5) squad that reached the District 3 semifinals before falling to Bishop McDevitt 35-7. Rick Keeley is entering his 37th season as a head coach. Barreto said, “He’s the best. He’s got the best speeches, always gets you hype no matter what.” Keeley has won 270 games in his career and five District 3 championships. Barreto also discussed his favorite teachers and classes at Berks Catholic. While Barreto plays center, he’s not a fan of Jason Kelce. Barreto admitted that he supports the Dallas Cowboys. That probably doesn’t go over well at school, but his teammates are glad to have him back in the middle of the action.

Ty Yocum-Exeter https://berkssportsreport.com/ty-yocum-exeter-3/ Fri, 15 Oct 2021 23:20:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=1846 Most football games are decided at the line of scrimmage. There were two critical 4th and 1 plays in the final eight minutes of the Exeter-Berks Catholic Section 1 matchup. First, Ty Yocum and the Eagles’ defense stuffed the Saints at Berks Catholic’s 29-yard line. Yocum told me that he knew what play was coming. Two and a-half minutes later, Yocum picked up a big first down at the Saints’ 20-yard line. He followed that carry with a 1-yard TD run, and Exeter defeated Berks Catholic 33-21. Yocum finished with 32 yards and 2TD on eight carries. The 220-pound FB/LB loves short yardage situations. You will find out what advice Yocum gave to Eric Nangle who ran for 131 yards and a score. Plus, you will learn Yocum’s nickname. The Eagles are 5-3. They take on Reading next week. The Saints were up 21-14 midway through the third quarter. They’re also 5-3. Jay Jay Jordan had a 75-yard TD catch, a 21-yard TD run, and a 76-yard kickoff return that set up Berks Catholic’s first score.

Yocum’s 5-yard TD run tied the game at 14 with four minutes left in the second quarter. It was all Exeter after that at Don Thomas Stadium. Yocum rumbled for 46 yards on six carries. The 220-pound senior LB made four tackles and an INT. I asked him about squaring off against Wilson standout RB/LB Jadyn Jones. Yocum praised the Eagles’ student section. He also discussed how the early loss to Central York motivated the team.

Ty said his brothers have had a big influence on him. Ty led the Eagles in tackles last year with 71. The powerful runner made the most of his 23 carries, scoring 7TD. Ty was named a second team All-County all-purpose back, and a second team LB in Section 1 of the Berks Football League. I asked him if he would rather score a TD or make a big hit. Ty’s answer was perfect! He also mentioned his favorite comedians.
