Mifflin https://berkssportsreport.com/travis-jenkins-gov-mifflin-3/ Tue, 03 Jun 2025 03:45:57 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4962 Survive and advance. That’s what playing in the state tournament is all about. There is no consolation bracket. There aren’t any third and fifth place games. It’s win or go home. Gov. Mifflin overcame some pitching issues and beat Perkiomen Valley 6-1 in the first round of the PIAA-6A playoffs. The District 3 champions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning. After an error and a walk, Travis Jenkins ripped a two-run double to right-center. The Canisius commit and All-State catcher said it’s important to strike first in the postseason. “You don’t want to feel like you’re playing from behind at all. You know teams are gonna be tough, teams are gonna battle. You can’t take an out off,” he replied. Jenkins went 3-for-4 on Monday afternoon in Shillington. The senior catcher was a home run shy of the cycle. Matt Koehler made it 3-0 with a RBI groundout to shortstop. Billy Angstadt knocked in another run with a single to center. Mikey Strechay needed 39 pitches to get through the opening frame. The senior righty entered the day with a (5-2) record and 1.35 ERA. The Vikings finished sixth in the District 1 tournament after winning the PAC title. Strechay allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits over just 1.1 innings against the (26-1) Mustangs. Bryce Detwiler started the bottom of the 2nd with a triple to right-center. The UConn commit scored on a groundout by Branson Adams. Jenkins then hammered a triple to right field which ended Strechay’s outing. Nick Cress took over on the hill for the (17-9) Vikings. Ethan Grim hit a hard ground ball to Liam McNeill at third base. His throw to home plate hit courtesy runner Nick Montgomery in the back. Gov. Mifflin had quickly built a 6-0 cushion. Grim (8-0) felt some tightness in his arm which prompted head coach Chris Hole to turn to Evan Glucksnis. Grim, who’s headed to Virginia Tech, gave up one hit and a walk in two innings. He struck out three. Glucksnis went 1.2 innings before he was also taken out due to arm tightness. Hole expects both pitchers to be fine moving forward. Glucksnis was given credit for the win after not permitting a run. The junior got a pair of strikeouts and limited Perkiomen Valley to one hit. Aden Reiter entered with runners on first and second and two outs in the 4th. The 5’5 junior got Chris Allen to ground out to third to end the threat. Reiter had only pitched a few innings all season. “Aden came in and shut the door. We knew he could pitch, but we never knew it would be in this spot…We needed people to step up in roles and they obviously did,” noted Jenkins. Reiter provided 2.1 innings of relief. He limited the Vikings to one run on two hits. They got on the scoreboard in the 5th thanks to a RBI single down the third base line by Washington College commit Andrew Keenan. He came into the week with a .361 batting average, seven doubles, and three homers. Perkiomen Valley left two runners on base in the 5th. RJ Weaver was called upon in the 7th for the Mustangs. The junior gave up one hit and a walk before sealing the deal. Aidan Autovino, a Mount St. Mary’s commit, had three of the Vikings’ five hits. They committed two errors. Gov. Mifflin racked up ten hits. Eight different Mustangs had at least one hit. They will meet District 11 runner-up Liberty in the state quarterfinals on Thursday. Gov. Mifflin won the PIAA-5A title last year. The Mustangs have claimed BCIAA and District 3 championships this spring. They’re still looking for more. “We all came back with the same mentality. We want to win all three [titles] this year,” stated Jenkins.

Travis Jenkins-Gov. Mifflin https://berkssportsreport.com/travis-jenkins-gov-mifflin-2/ Sun, 20 Apr 2025 12:33:07 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4878 Travis Jenkins is known for his work behind the plate. On Saturday, the All-State catcher was needed on the mound and he delivered. The Canisius commit fired four hitless innings of relief as Gov. Mifflin held off Twin Valley 9-5 in eight innings. “If I have to pitch, I’ll pitch but catching is more my thing,” said Jenkins. He also came through offensively with a two-out, two-run single to left field in the top of the 8th. “I was trying to stay back. I was getting pull happy so just try to stay back,” he explained. Jenkins is a right-handed pitcher, but a lefty hitter. He was 1-for-3 with two walks and picked up the 100th RBI of his career. The (15-0) Mustangs put two runs on the scoreboard in the 1st inning at Elverson. Branson Adams drove in Bryce Detwiler with a double to left-center. Adams then scored on a wild pitch by Nolan Cromwell. The senior was making his first appearance of the season. He allowed four runs, three earned, over four innings. Cromwell gave up three hits and walked four. The (6-5) Raiders got one run back in the bottom of the 1st. Grant Moser, who reached on an error, was thrown out at home on Brody Majeski’s double to left-center. Majeski, one of three sophomores in the lineup, scored on an infield single by Logan Crunkleton. The senior first baseman entered the day with a .355 batting average and a team-high five doubles. Matt Koehler made it 3-1 in the 4th with a solo homer to center field. “He was due. He’s been getting robbed a lot, not finding holes. I’m proud of him,” replied Jenkins. Koehler, who’s committed to Juniata, went 2-for-5 with a double. Twin Valley went in front 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the 4th. “They’re a really good team. They really battled,” stated Jenkins. After an RBI groundout by Kooper Zdimal with the bases loaded, Moser provided a two-run single to left field. Gov. Mifflin coach Chris Hole, who reached 200 career wins early this season, decided to use junior Joe Murray as a pinch-hitter in the 5th. In just his second at-bat of the year, the left-handed hitting Murray ripped a solo home run to right field. That ended Cromwell’s afternoon and tied it at 4-4. Southpaw Nate Sedgwick walked Detwiler and Jenkins before Ethan Grim smashed a RBI single to left. Grim, one of the top pitchers in the state, is headed to Virginia Tech. He was 2-for-5 with 3 RBI. Jenkins took over on the mound for Evan Glucksnis with two men on and nobody out in the bottom of the 5th. Glucksnis, a junior righty, was charged with five runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out three in four frames. Nate DiRocco evened the game at 5-5 with a RBI groundout to second in the 5th. DiRocco and Majeski, both sophomores, had two hits apiece. Junior designated hitter Cam Zurawski led off the 8th with a walk. Lefty Jayce Oliver, another sophomore, then hit Billy Angstadt. After Murray got down a sacrifice bunt, the Raiders intentionally walked Detwiler to load the bases. The UConn commit finished with a single, three walks, three runs, and four stolen bases. “Teams like to pitch around him. No matter what, he finds a way on. He keeps his head up,” noted Jenkins. Oliver struck out Adams for the second out of the inning. Jenkins broke the tie with a clutch opposite field single to left. Grim followed with a long two-run single that hit the left field fence. Oliver permitted four runs on three hits in 2.1 innings. Jenkins got a pair of strikeouts and a pop-up to shortstop in the bottom of the 8th. He threw 45 pitches in just his second appearance of the season. The unbeaten Mustangs finished with eight hits and the Raiders ended up with nine. Gov. Mifflin drew eight walks. “We know we’re (15-0), but we haven’t won anything yet. We just go to practice, work hard, and have fun,” said Jenkins.

Travis Jenkins-Gov. Mifflin https://berkssportsreport.com/travis-jenkins-gov-mifflin/ Thu, 27 Apr 2023 10:14:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=3570 Gov. Mifflin and Muhlenberg were battling for first place in Division 1 on Wednesday at Owls Field in West Lawn. This prime time matchup in the Berks County Baseball Showcase lived up to expectations. Sophomore Travis Jenkins hammered a 2-run triple in the 6th inning that led the Mustangs to a 3-1 victory. “It was tense. This was a big game for us, big game for them,” said Jenkins. The left-handed hitting center fielder gave credit to relief pitcher Matt Novotny. The senior threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks. “I don’t know what to say. He did a really good job. [He] did what he had to do and came up clutch for us,” remarked Jenkins. The (8-4, 6-2) Muhls got on the board in the top of the 3rd thanks to Shane Rosenberry’s sacrifice fly to center. However, Muhlenberg only got one run out of that bases loaded with no outs situation. UConn commit Tyler Minick allowed two hits and two walks over four frames. The Berks Player of the Year in 2022 struck out three and hit a batter. The (11-3, 7-1) Mustangs tied it in the 4th on a two-out RBI single by Darien Troche that deflected off the first baseman’s glove. Senior Dalton Follweiler held Gov. Mifflin hitless for the first three innings. He entered the game with a (3-0) record and 0.91 ERA. Follweiler gave up three runs on five hits and one walk in 5+ innings. The righty had four strikeouts. Bryce Detwiler and Bloomsburg commit Xander Velez opened the bottom of the 6th with singles. That set the stage for Jenkins. He’s part of a very talented sophomore class that includes Detwiler, Ethan Grim, and Matt Koehler. “I have no worries about the next couple years,” stated Jenkins. Grim punched out two batters in the 7th for the save. Velez went 2-for-2. Gov. Mifflin finished with six hits, while Muhlenberg managed just four. Senior third baseman Derek Wilson was 2-for-2 with a walk. The Mustangs swept the regular season series. They beat the Muhls 15-3 on April 3rd. When asked what he likes to do for fun, Jenkins replied “Practice more baseball.”
