Thompson – Berks Sports Report https://berkssportsreport.com Paul Roberts Sat, 04 Dec 2021 05:23:42 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.7.2 Amory Thompson-Wyomissing https://berkssportsreport.com/amory-thompson-wyomissing-5/ Sat, 04 Dec 2021 00:12:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=2180 Amory Thompson wasn’t expecting another blowout win, but that’s exactly what happened in the Class 3A state semifinals at Pennridge High School. The (15-0) Spartans hammered District 12 champ Neumann-Goretti 42-6. Saints’ quarterback Marqui Adams didn’t play in the first half due to an injury. Highly-touted junior Shawn Battle was utilized as a Wildcat QB by head coach Albie Crosby. Neumann-Goretti marched 78 yards on the opening drive for a 6-0 advantage. That 12-play drive took six minutes. Thompson told me that the Spartans adjusted by putting an extra defender in the box. That adjustment paid off in a big way. The Saints were shutout for the rest of the game. They managed just 169 total yards and only 57 in the second half. Wyomissing forced two turnovers and got a blocked punt from Aiden Mack. The Spartans outscored the Saints 28-0 in the third quarter. Thompson had 114 yards and a touchdown on six carries. We talked about his 57-yard score midway through the third quarter, and how he almost got caught from behind. The 3-year starter at cornerback said Wyomissing’s offensive line frustrated Neumann-Goretti all night. The Spartans finished with 409 yards including 351 on the ground. Thompson complimented Ben Zechman for his accuracy in the passing game. The 6’3 junior QB was 5-7 for 58 yards and 2TD. Drew Eisenhower chipped in with 66 yards rushing to go along with two combined touchdowns. Tommy Grabowski got 18 carries for 108 yards and a score. Charlie McIntyre’s 10-yard TD grab put Wyomissing up 28-6 in the decisive third quarter. All of the Spartans’ weapons were on display. Thompson mentioned that the fan support was great. Wyomissing moves on to face Central Valley next Saturday for the 3A state championship! Kickoff is at noon at Hersheypark Stadium. Central Valley beat the Spartans in the state final last year.

That’s how many passing yards the (13-0) Spartans have allowed in their last two games. Middletown and Boiling Springs were a combined 0-for-13 throwing the football. Wyomissing has a talented and experienced secondary. Cornerbacks Amory Thompson and Nevin Carter are three-year starters. Thompson also starts at halfback and returns kicks. He had a TD run and a TD catch in a 55-14 victory over second-seeded Boiling Springs in the District 3-3A championship. Thompson ran for 65 yards on nine carries. His two receptions went for 24 yards. Thompson’s 7-yard TD grab with 47 seconds left in the second quarter put the Spartans up 28-7. He said junior QB Ben Zechman bounced back well after tossing an interception on the opening drive. Zechman was 4-6 for 90 yards and 2TD. Thompson pointed out the great job that senior linebacker Jack Miller did on defense. Thompson told me that Miller was calling out the Bubblers’ plays before the ball was snapped. Thompson gave credit to the coaching staff for preparing the players each week. Here’s a scary thought; Thompson admitted that the Spartans didn’t have a good week at practice, yet they won a District 3 title by 41 points! Wyomissing has brought home ten District championships overall and three straight. Thompson knows that there’s still work to be done. He said the Spartans aren’t satisfied yet. Wyomissing will square off with undefeated Scranton Prep in the Class 3A state quarterfinals.

Their “closest” game was a 41-21 victory over Southern Columbia…until today. #5 seed Middletown put up a fight against top-seeded and unbeaten Wyomissing in the District 3-3A semifinals. The Blue Raiders are very familiar with the Spartans’ Wing-T attack. They’ve squared off in the playoffs six straight years. Middletown trailed 7-0 at halftime. Wyomissing took control with a back-breaking 17-play, 79-yard drive on the opening series of the third quarter. The Spartans took eight minutes off the clock and converted three 4th downs. Tommy Grabowski punched it in on 4th and goal from the 2-yard line and Wyomissing eliminated the Blue Raiders 14-0. Grabowski had 28 carries for 157 yards and 2TD. The Spartans ran for 235 yards and held Middletown to 48 total yards. Senior HB/CB Amory Thompson had an interception, one of two turnovers forced by Wyomissing. Thompson is very confident in the secondary which includes three-year starter Nevin Carter at the other cornerback position. Drew Eisenhower and Charlie McIntyre are the safeties. Tate Leach was 0-8 with an interception for the Blue Raiders. Thompson had a 75-yard kickoff return TD called back by a holding penalty, but he knows that’s part of the game. He said the rain and wind made things difficult in the first half. We talked about the Spartans’ big third quarter drive, and what it’s like to tackle Tajae Broadie. Middletown’s 6’4, 240-pound fullback rumbled for a career-high 174 yards and 3TD last week at West Perry. Wyomissing held him to 23 yards on eight carries. The (12-0) Spartans go for their third consecutive District 3 championship next Saturday vs. #2 Boiling Springs.

Amory Thompson-Wyomissing https://berkssportsreport.com/amory-thompson-wyomissing-2/ Sat, 30 Oct 2021 18:24:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=1954 Did you know that Amory Thompson is friends with Cam Jones of Wilson? In fact, they grew up playing football and basketball together. Jones and Thompson are two extremely dangerous kick returners. Thompson showed off those skills in a 45-7 rout of Conrad Weiser which gave Wyomissing the outright Section 2 title in the Berks Football League. The Spartans improved to (10-0, 6-0) while the Scouts slipped to (7-3, 4-2). Thompson told me that he wasn’t surprised by today’s final score. The 6’1, 185-pound senior ran for 76 yards and a TD on ten carries. His 18-yard score midway through the second quarter put Wyomissing up 24-0. Thompson opened the second half with a big kickoff return to the Conrad Weiser 36-yard line. He said the Spartans spend a lot of practice time on special teams. We discussed their defensive game plan against Dartmouth commit Logan Klitsch and the Scouts. Wyomissing allowed 122 total yards and only 23 on the ground! Drew Eisenhower came up with an interception in the first quarter that led to a Spartans’ TD. Plus, Thompson stressed the importance of performing well on their home field.

The Spartans’ backfield is a big reason why. Amory Thompson will be joined by Tommy Grabowski, Drew Eisenhower, and Charlie McIntyre. Thompson averaged over 6 yards per carry last year, and opened a lot of eyes with a spectacular one-handed TD catch against Danville in the state semifinals. The three-year starter praised longtime head coach Bob Wolfrum. Thompson also revealed where he’d love to play college football. Plus, I asked him if any of his teammates can beat him in a race, and who’s the best Madden NFL player at Wyomissing.
