Rick Perez – Berks Sports Report https://berkssportsreport.com Paul Roberts Wed, 18 Feb 2026 19:19:54 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=7.0 York High ends Reading’s Season https://berkssportsreport.com/york-high-ends-readings-season/ Wed, 18 Feb 2026 16:29:33 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5437 Reading and York High have combined for 36 District 3 championships in boys basketball. The Red Knights own a record 24 titles. They returned to the tournament after not qualifying last season for the first time since 2001. Fifth-seeded Reading battled the Bearcats on Tuesday at the Geigle Complex. “I think that’s the best first round matchup at any level. It doesn’t get much better than that,” emphasized second-year head coach Kerry Glover. He took over at York after winning 130 games and two District 3 championships in eight years at Columbia. Glover reiterated a familiar message to his players. “I’ve been preaching to them all season let’s try to make the first run and the last run each game,” he explained. That’s precisely what the (18-8) Bearcats did with their season on the line. They raced out to a 38-16 lead and held off the Red Knights 85-69. York will host #13 seed Cedar Crest in the District 3-6A quarterfinals on Friday night. The Falcons upset fourth-seeded Muhlenberg 66-60 in overtime. Reading’s season ended with a mark of (18-8).

The Red Knights won at York 70-60 back on December 6th. The Bearcats came out with a much more aggressive mentality this time around. They pounded the offensive glass and held Reading scoreless for three minutes and fifteen seconds. A 3-pointer by Sincere Burgos made it 7-0 after two minutes. Justin Brown came off the bench and hit a triple from the left corner with five seconds left in the opening quarter. The Red Knights trailed 22-10 after eight minutes and point guard Weshly Rosario had picked up a pair of fouls. He’s the lone senior in Reading’s starting lineup. Meanwhile, six different players scored for York in the first quarter.

The Bearcats began the second period with a pivotal 16-to-6 run. Nasir Barnes made three free throws after getting fouled beyond the arc with five and a-half minutes remaining in the first half. The 6’1 junior point guard was just getting warmed up. He piled up 33 points and nine assists. Barnes is already the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,614 career points. The smooth southpaw splashed a trey midway through the second quarter to give York a 33-16 advantage. A three-point play by Brown increased the margin to 38-16 with three minutes to go before halftime. The Red Knights closed out the half on a 13-to-2 run to finally gain some momentum. Javon Merriweather nailed a triple and Jostin DeCastro provided two three-point plays. DeCastro finished with a team-high 20 points before fouling out with 2:35 left. The 6’3 junior guard squeezed ten points into the third quarter. Reading was behind 40-29 at halftime.

A three-point play by Barnes put York in front 50-33 with 3:40 to play in the third period. The Red Knights responded with eight straight points. “A well-coached team, a lot of talented players, and we know Reading is gonna be tough and physical,” acknowledged Glover. The Bearcats maintained a 61-47 edge entering the fourth quarter. They missed their first four foul shots to start the period. Merriweather connected from long range to pull the Red Knights within 74-64 with 2:40 remaining. The 6’2 sophomore drained another trey from the left wing to make it 78-69 with two minutes on the clock. However, York sealed the deal with the final seven points including a 3-pointer from Barnes. He poured in 13 points over the last eight minutes. “Everyone knows he can score the basketball. I’ve challenged him to not just be the best scorer in District 3, be the best player. Be a leader, get other guys involved, and make sure we control the tempo,” remarked Glover.

When Barnes wasn’t scoring, he was getting into the lane and finding his teammates for easy buckets. He also spent a lot of time at the foul line, going a perfect 12-for-12. Brandon DeShields, a 6’6 senior, had 13 points. Yoziah Romero and Brown added ten points apiece. Dawone Hodges, a 6’3 senior, chipped in with eight points. The Bearcats went 24-of-31 from the stripe, while Reading was 20-of-26. York made seven 3-pointers, compared to just three for the Red Knights. Raybin Rubio provided a spark for Reading with a dozen points. The sophomore guard became a starter a few games ago. Rosario had ten points in his finale.

York clinched a berth in the state playoffs. The top eight teams in Class 6A advance to the PIAA tournament. Red Knights’ head coach Rick Perez will enter next season with 299 career wins. He’ll have a much more experienced squad next winter. DeCastro, Merriweather, Cameron “Bron Bron” Jones, Jamier Jacob, Rubio, and freshman Tai’je Slaughter will return. “This game has become much more than winning and losing to me. I fell short of being able to impose that on our guys and have them believe in that. That has always been the driving force to this program. I pray I can teach that, and show them that playing for something bigger than wins, losses and championships can take you further than you imagined. I will be better,” said Perez.

Javon Merriweather-Reading https://berkssportsreport.com/javon-merriweather-reading-2/ Thu, 12 Feb 2026 13:05:51 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5418 Round 3 between Reading and Muhlenberg took place at Santander Arena on Wednesday night. The third-seeded Red Knights and second-seeded Muhls split their regular season meetings. This time a trip to the BCIAA Championship Game was on the line. The players and coaches came together arm in arm at half-court in a gesture of unity before the tip. These rivals then battled for all 32 minutes. “It was real intense. Every game we play against them, it’s always gonna be like that. It was an amazing game,” said Javon Merriweather. The 6’2 sophomore guard provided a dozen points off the bench in a thrilling 60-57 victory. Jostin DeCastro, a 6’3 junior guard, had a team-high 17 points. Weshly Rosario’s layup with 1:26 left put Reading in front 58-57. Jadin Perez, the son of Red Knights’ head coach Rick Perez, missed a 3-pointer from the right corner with two seconds remaining. Reading advanced to play top-seeded Berks Catholic in the county final on Friday at 8pm.

The (18-6) Red Knights opened the heavyweight contest with five straight points and built a 18-8 advantage on the scorecard. The (16-7) Muhls trailed 19-10 after eight minutes. A three-point play by Perez pulled Muhlenberg within 23-19 midway through the second quarter. Merriweather contributed five points in that period and Reading led 35-25 at halftime. The southpaw was playing in Santander Arena for the first time. “I liked it a lot. I always like big moments. I never get nervous,” he replied. Cameron “Bron Bron” Jones, a 6’ sophomore, chipped in with ten points. Rosario and Jamier Jacob finished with eight points apiece in a balanced attack. “Anybody on this team could score. Being unselfish, that’s how we play best. If we keep doing that, we’re a great team,” emphasized Merriweather.

The Muhls, as expected, didn’t go away quietly. They began the second half with a 12-to-4 run. The Red Knights responded by scoring ten of the next twelve points. Rosario converted a three-point play and Jones hit a triple. Muhlenberg was behind 49-41 entering the fourth quarter. A 11-to-3 run by the Muhls evened it up at 52-52 with 5:36 to go. Eli Hemmings squeezed twelve of his game-high 22 points into the final period. The lanky 6’4 junior guard put home an offensive rebound and was fouled with 4:34 on the clock. Hemmings sank the free throw to give Muhlenberg its first lead at 55-54. His scoop shot put the Muhls on top 57-56 with 1:47 to play. Rosario, the lone senior in Reading’s starting lineup, drove down the right side of the lane and scored with 1:26 left. Merriweather then found DeCastro for a layup with 52 seconds remaining. DeCastro opted to attack the basket with a 60-57 edge in the final seconds. He missed which gave Muhlenberg another opportunity to tie the game. Hemmings passed to Perez in the corner for a 3-pointer. Jones got his hand on the ball just before Perez released the shot. It came up short, grazing the right side of the rim.

The Red Knights were outstanding from the foul line. They went 12-for-14 and the Muhls ended up 12-for-16. Jones knocked down two of Reading’s four treys. Muhlenberg only connected three times from beyond the arc. Nelson “Coco” Malave had 15 points, including eleven in the first half. The junior guard played for the Red Knights last year. Perez provided eight points off the Muhls’ bench. They were trying to reach the Berks Conference Championship for the first time since 1974. Reading has claimed a record 25 BCIAA titles. “We don’t look ahead…We talk about what we’re gonna do the next day at practice. We don’t want to talk about championships,” explained Merriweather. They’ll get another chance to cut the nets down on Friday night at Santander Arena.

Jostin DeCastro-Reading https://berkssportsreport.com/jostin-decastro-reading-2/ Fri, 23 Jan 2026 16:08:26 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5382 Reading and Muhlenberg met for the first time six weeks ago. The Muhls rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to win 71-68 at the Geigle Complex. The Red Knights didn’t forget what happened on December 11th. “It motivated all of us. It lit a fire under us…They beat us last time so we knew we had to get back,” said Reading guard Jostin DeCastro. The 6’3 junior provided 15 of his 21 points in the second half of a 74-68 victory on Thursday. The gym in Laureldale was sold out for this intense rivalry. Players from both teams had to be separated as they spilled into the scorer’s table and first row of the bleachers after the final buzzer. “I think it’s just a lot of misunderstanding,” explained DeCastro. Weshly Rosario poured in a season-high 26 points for the (13-5, 7-2) Red Knights. “I can always trust Weshly to perform. He’s a senior, I look up to him,” emphasized DeCastro. Rosario has racked up 74 points in his last three games against Muhlenberg.

Reading knocked down all five of its 3-pointers in the opening quarter. Rosario hit a pair of triples and sophomore Javon Merriweather came off the bench to make two more treys. The (14-4, 7-2) Muhls found themselves in a 23-13 hole after eight minutes. Mike Miller Jr. jammed eight points into the first period, but he picked up his fourth foul with 6:53 left in the first half. The senior forward fouled out with 6:41 remaining in the third quarter. The Red Knights were in front 40-24 at halftime and they got a bucket from DeCastro to begin the second half.

Jadin Perez, the son of Reading head coach Rick Perez, splashed a 3-pointer with just over two minutes to go in the third quarter. Eli Hemmings, a 6’4 junior guard, then made two free throws to pull Muhlenberg within 50-41. Hemmings was fouled on the Muhls’ next possession. He split a pair of foul shots, grabbed an offensive rebound after his second attempt, and was fouled again. Hemmings connected twice from the stripe and Reading’s lead had quickly dwindled to 50-44 with 1:45 to play in the third period. The Red Knights were outscored 21-12 in that quarter. They were on top 52-45 entering the last eight minutes.

Perez buried another triple from the left corner and then found sophomore Rhyon Hutchinson for a layup. The fans were going crazy as Muhlenberg made it 53-50 with 6:29 on the clock. However, Reading responded with a pivotal 8-0 run. DeCastro gave credit to Perez who earned his 294th career win. “The talent is there on our team. We can go up against anybody. Our only problem is our emotions. Coach P. does a lot of keeping us together and keeping our emotions in check,” noted DeCastro. Following a turnover by the Muhls, DeCastro finished a breakaway layup for a 69-57 edge with 1:18 left. He converted two important free throws with 36 seconds remaining. Perez sank his third 3-pointer from the left corner to get Muhlenberg within 71-66 with 24 seconds to go. Rosario answered with two clutch foul shots three seconds later. The Red Knights ended up 27-of-39 from the stripe. They were 18-of-24 in the fourth quarter. Rosario connected on 12 of his 17 attempts, while DeCastro was 8-for-10. Jamier Jacob chipped in with nine points and Merriweather added eight. Reading won for the fifth time in six games, despite committing 19 turnovers.

Hemmings had a team-high 23 points for the Muhls, including 21 in the second half. He scored a game-high 25 points when Muhlenberg defeated Reading last month. Nelson “Coco” Malave, a transfer from Reading, contributed ten points on Thursday. Perez, a 6’4 senior, was responsible for nine of the Muhls’ 17 bench points. Miller and junior point guard LJ Armstrong ended up with eight points apiece. Muhlenberg drained eight treys and went 16-for-24 from the foul line. Their five-game winning streak came to a halt.

Four teams in Division 1 of the Berks Conference are within two games. Berks Catholic is atop the standings with a (8-1) league mark. The Red Knights and Muhls are tied for second place at (7-2). Wilson, which won 55-51 at Exeter on Thursday, is still in the mix at (6-3). “Right now, it’s up in the air. There’s no guarantee who’s gonna win,” said DeCastro.

Cameron “Bron Bron” Jones-Reading https://berkssportsreport.com/cameron-bron-bron-jones-reading/ Tue, 23 Dec 2025 14:07:42 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5321 Reading has struggled in the third quarter this season. Those eight minutes turned Monday’s game with Exeter around, but this time it was in the favor of the Red Knights. They outscored the Eagles 27-to-10 in the third period and cruised to a 72-51 victory at the Geigle Complex. Reading coach Rick Perez said his team’s defensive commitment and communication was the difference. “Once we got stops, we got out and the pace picked up. In the first half, we didn’t score too many transition buckets. I knew that was gonna come at some point. That’s a staple of what we do,” explained Perez. The (4-3, 1-2) Red Knights forced 21 turnovers, including eight in the decisive third quarter. “We stress POAs, winning the point of attack. When you win that, we can get it out and everybody can finish,” noted Cameron “Bron Bron” Jones. Jostin DeCastro finished with a game-high 23 points. The 6’3 junior guard squeezed 13 points into the third period. “He is maturing right before our eyes. He is a young man that is assuming a leadership role. I’m proud of him,” replied Perez. DeCastro is averaging a team-high 21.7 ppg. this year. Reading snapped a three-game slide and ended Exeter’s four-game winning streak.

Weshly Rosario, who was providing 18.3 ppg., picked up two fouls in the first four and a-half minutes. Jones took over at point guard and hit a pair of triples before finding Jamier Jacob for a layup. The 6’ sophomore helped the Red Knights build a 19-14 edge after the opening quarter. “Oh my goodness, Bron Bron is exceptional to the game. He just knows how to play…I love him to be a playmaker. He really forces tempo and starts the break,” emphasized Perez. Jones ended up with ten points, the most in the early stages of his career. He enjoys sharing the ball. “I like to get everybody involved, make sure everybody is happy,” he said.

Braylon Reinert got his second foul less than three minutes into the game. The 6’3, 225-pound forward managed just two points in the first half. The (6-2, 2-1) Eagles were once again without Dylan Donate. The senior guard, who averaged 19 points in three games, is dealing with a calf strain. Exeter got some good news on Monday with the return of Aidan Dauble. The 6’3, 215-pound senior was an All-Division pick a season ago when he contributed a team-high 16 ppg. Dauble struggled from 3-point range against Reading, but he hadn’t played since the season opener due to an injury. The first team linebacker in Section 2 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League led the Eagles with ten points. Dauble scored the first basket of the second half to pull Exeter within 28-27. The Red Knights responded with a 23-to-4 run. A three-point play by DeCastro made it 44-30 midway through the third quarter. Rosario knocked down a trey with three minutes left in the period for a 51-31 advantage. Reading was on top 55-35 entering the fourth quarter.

Four players were in double digits for the Red Knights. Jacob had a dozen points and Rosario added ten despite being limited due to foul trouble. His third foul came one minute into the second quarter. Mikal Portalatin chipped in with six points. He started in place of Javon Merriweather who expects to return this Saturday. The sophomore shooting guard has been putting up nearly 15 points a night. Reading went 11-for-15 from the foul line, while the Eagles were 14-of-20. Reinert and Jayden Ware finished with eight points apiece. Exeter only made three 3-pointers and two of those shots came in the final minutes.

Jones was the spark that the Red Knights needed in the first quarter. After falling to Muhlenberg and Wilson at home, Reading earned its first league win. This is a program that has won a record 25 BCIAA championships and 24 District III titles. Perez guided the Red Knights to a trio of state crowns, most recently in 2023. “It’s a legacy, it’s a culture. You feel some different type of energy when you got the Reading High jersey on,” stated Jones. Perez believes that Jones has a bright future. “If there’s one person who understands Red Knight toughness and Red Knight culture, it’s him,” remarked Perez.

Jostin DeCastro-Reading https://berkssportsreport.com/jostin-decastro-reading/ Tue, 02 Dec 2025 01:10:13 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5278 Reading’s basketball team will have a much different look this season. Jeremiah Camara, Kahlil Samuel, Blake Adams, Xavier Beatty, and Nelson “Coco” Malave are all gone. The Red Knights will have a new head coach as well, although he certainly knows his way around the Geigle Complex. Rick Perez has returned to Reading after spending the past two years as an assistant coach at Muhlenberg. He takes over for Francis Camara who went (35-23). Perez guided the Red Knights to three PIAA championships, five District III titles, and six BCIAA trophies over a dozen seasons. His 281 victories are a school record.

Perez will be counting on his backcourt of Weshly Rosario and Jostin DeCastro to lead the way. DeCastro averaged 12.9 points per game as a sophomore last year. “Jostin is a diamond in the rough. His game just keeps ascending. As he learns more, he wants more,” said Perez. The 6’2 guard was Reading’s second-leading scorer during the 2024-25 campaign. “Jostin reminds me of when Daniel Alcantara burst on the scene. They have different playing styles, but how smooth they are and their feel for the game is similar. His best basketball is yet to come,” remarked Perez. DeCastro poured in 20 points in a 88-80 win over Muhlenberg in late January. He had 14 points when the Red Knights upset top-seeded Berks Catholic 48-41 in the BCIAA semifinals. Reading had won nine out of ten games before falling to Wilson 55-39 in the Berks County Championship at Santander Arena. DeCastro only made two 3-pointers in 25 games. He got in the gym and started practicing his long range shot as soon as the season ended. “I saw how they were playing me in the county championship game and I knew I had to work on that. It’s a big part of basketball now,” he explained.

Rosario will run the show for the Red Knights this winter. The 6’ senior point guard is a tremendous passer with great vision. DeCastro enjoys playing with Rosario. “It’s a lot of fun. He connects the whole team. We all come together with him on the court. He finds you, he looks you open sometimes,” replied DeCastro. Rosario averaged 12 ppg. last year. He erupted for 28 points in the victory over Muhlenberg on January 23rd at the Geigle Complex. Rosario will be setting up a pair of young guards this season. Cameron “Bron Bron” Jones and Javon Merriweather are a couple of sophomores to keep an eye on. Jamier Jacob will need to provide a presence in the paint for the undersized Red Knights. The 6’2, 215-pound junior was a TE/DE on the football team this fall.

Reading finished (13-12) after a (1-6) start last year. The Red Knights didn’t qualify for the District III playoffs for the first time since 2001. Expectations are always high on North 13th Street. Reading holds the state record with 2,281 all-time wins. The boys basketball program has been around for 125 years. The Red Knights have racked up 25 BCIAA championships, 24 District III titles, and 20 Central Penn League crowns. Reading begins its season at the York High tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Red Knights’ home opener is Tuesday, December 9th against McCaskey. “I’m really excited. Last year we came up short and I’m glad that we have the opportunity to come back and prove ourselves,” said DeCastro.

Rick Perez Returning to Reading https://berkssportsreport.com/rick-perez-returning-to-reading/ Wed, 24 Sep 2025 01:11:59 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5140 The coach who led Reading to three state championships is returning to lead the Red Knights. Berks Sports Report has learned that Rick Perez is expected to be approved as Reading’s boys basketball head coach at Wednesday’s school board meeting. Perez has spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Muhlenberg.

Perez guided the Red Knights for twelve years. They captured PIAA titles in 2017, 2021, and 2023. Reading also claimed five District 3 championships and six BCIAA crowns during Perez’s tenure. Perez had a record of (281-74) with the Red Knights. He has the most victories in program history, surpassing Jim Gano’s mark of 251 wins. Lonnie Walker helped Reading earn its first state championship in 2017. The Red Knights defeated Pine-Richland 64-60 in front of 9,531 fans at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Francis Camara served as Reading’s head coach the last two years. The Red Knights finished (13-12) this past season after a (1-6) start. They won seven of their last eight regular season games to qualify for the Berks County playoffs. However, Reading didn’t make it into the District 3-6A tournament for the first time since 2001. Camara, a 2008 Reading graduate, had previously been an assistant coach under Perez. The school district opted to open the position of head coach last month. Camara’s son, Jeremiah, is now attending Berks Catholic. He was the Red Knights’ leading scorer last season at 14 points per game. Perez’s sons, Jadin and Kalib, are on Muhlenberg’s basketball team.

Reading has won more games than any other high school in Pennsylvania history. The Red Knights have piled up 25 Berks County championships and 24 District 3 titles.
