quarterback – Berks Sports Report https://berkssportsreport.com Paul Roberts Fri, 10 Oct 2025 15:54:34 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=7.0 Johnny Sauppee-Berks Catholic https://berkssportsreport.com/johnny-sauppee-berks-catholic/ Fri, 10 Oct 2025 15:47:41 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5174 Berks Catholic’s offense has done its damage on the ground this season. The Saints only had two touchdown passes in their first seven games. On Thursday, they took a few shots through the air and it paid off. Johnny Sauppee tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the first half and Berks Catholic blew out Columbia 37-0. “It feels great. We’ve been working on it all week, implementing more play-action,” explained Sauppee. The (6-2, 5-0) Saints have won six of their last seven contests.

The Crimson Tide faced a fourth-and-5 at Berks Catholic’s 44-yard line on the opening possession. Starting quarterback Cameron McClair was moved outside to wide receiver. Kareem Nichols’ pass to him down the right sideline was intercepted by sophomore Logan Gonzalez. Berks Catholic marched 90 yards on its first drive which lasted five minutes and ten seconds. The only pass was Sauppee’s 13-yard TD to Nick DeFazio. Sauppee faked a handoff and found his 6’2, 215-pound tight end wide open in the middle of the end zone.

Aidan Curley broke off a 22-yard run to midfield midway through the second quarter. He picked up seven more yards on fourth-and-3 at Columbia’s 45-yard line. Curley ended up with 73 yards on seven carries. Sauppee hit Coy Koller in the right flat for a 12-yard touchdown and a 14-0 advantage with 2:42 remaining before halftime. Koller is a 5’10, 165-pound sophomore who starts at running back and linebacker. “I think he’s really stepping up for us. He’s a state caliber wrestler. He can do it for years to come. He’ll be really good,” stated Sauppee. The 6’2, 205-pound senior has been starting at quarterback since Week 4. Sauppee took over after junior Cole Harter was injured in a 48-41 loss to Bethlehem Catholic. Harter is healthy again and head coach Dave Stahler said both quarterbacks are doing well at practice. Sauppee was 3-for-7 for 22 yards against the (3-5, 2-3) Crimson Tide.

Reading transfer Jeremiah Camara began the second half with a big kickoff return to Columbia’s 43-yard line. Camara then took a sweep to the left, cut up the middle, bounced it outside, and raced 41 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. The 5’8, 175-pound junior finished with 100 yards on a dozen carries. “He’s been great. He’s been working hard at football and basketball. He does a lot of good things for us. He’s also another threat downfield when we need him and he runs the ball very hard,” noted Sauppee. In five games, Camara has piled up 503 rushing yards and 5 TD on 53 touches.

A long punt pushed the Saints back to their 5-yard line midway through the third quarter. Koller busted a 55-yard run up the middle to get the drive started. Curley scored from ten yards out on a counter with 3:31 left in the third period. Berks Catholic covered 95 yards in just over two minutes and extended its lead to 28-0. The Saints’ defense added a safety early in fourth quarter. Defensive end Eric Bennethum and inside linebacker Ryan Spatz, a pair of juniors, wrapped up sophomore running back Chase Marley in the end zone. After Berks Catholic got the ball back, Faith Zudie took off on a 48-yard touchdown run with 9:51 to go. The Saints had a total of 389 yards including 367 on the ground. Their defense held the Crimson Tide to 86 yards. Sauppee, who also plays linebacker, mentioned that containing McClair was the key. “He’s elusive, he can get out of the pocket and make some plays downfield. That was very big for us to eliminate those [plays] and make him check it down to the flat,” replied Sauppee. McClair, a 6’2 junior, was 10-of-16 for 74 yards.

Berks Catholic travels to Hamburg next Friday. The Saints host Annville-Cleona in their regular season finale. That game could decide the Section 5 championship in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. The Dutchmen are unbeaten in league play at (4-0).

Exeter QB out with Shoulder Injury https://berkssportsreport.com/exeter-qb-out-with-shoulder-injury/ Fri, 05 Sep 2025 21:29:53 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5089 Berks Sports Report has learned that Exeter quarterback Riley Martinez needs surgery after suffering a shoulder injury last Friday at Boyertown. Martinez is expected to miss the rest of the season. The 6’3, 205-pound senior is a three-year starter for the Eagles. He was 7-of-10 for 159 yards and three touchdowns this season. Exeter hosts Pleasant Valley tonight. The Eagles are (2-0) and ranked #5 in the state in Class 5A by PennLive.

Jake Hafer, an All-County baseball player, will take over at quarterback as he did last fall. Martinez fractured his right leg in Week 7 of the 2024 season. Hafer started six games last year and helped Exeter reach the District 3-5A Championship. The 6’3, 190-pound senior finished 31-of-57 for 535 yards a season ago. Hafer tossed five touchdowns along with two interceptions. He’s 4-of-7 for 71 yards this year with a TD pass and a pick. Hafer also has five carries for 42 yards and a pair of scores. The Eagles beat Boyertown 28-10 last week.

Isaac McFadden-Hamburg https://berkssportsreport.com/isaac-mcfadden-hamburg/ Thu, 04 Sep 2025 16:47:37 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5086 Isaac McFadden isn’t your typical freshman. In May, he was competing in the NXGN quarterback camp at IMG Academy in Florida. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.85 seconds. McFadden (5’11, 170) can squat 330 pounds and power clean 220. He’s already starting at quarterback for Hamburg’s varsity team. Last Friday, McFadden led the Hawks on a decisive 13-play, 82-yard drive with 26 seconds remaining. After his 2-yard touchdown run, he took in the 2-point conversion for a thrilling 22-21 victory over Midd-West. “I was just locked in so we could go down and score and win the game,” he said. McFadden was 5-of-7 for 63 yards on that final drive. Hamburg rallied from a 21-7 deficit in the fourth quarter. “All of us were very excited. It was a blessing to win against a really good Midd-West team. Our line and our receivers played great all night,” noted McFadden.

The young quarterback finished 17-of-32 for 240 yards. Mason Strunk, a 6’4, 205-pound junior, had four catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. “He’s a great tight end. He can catch any ball I throw to him. He’s a really big weapon for us,” emphasized McFadden. He also utilized wide receivers Alex Soto and Ethan Horvath. They combined for eleven receptions and 105 yards. Soto, a 6’ junior, has a team-high nine catches for 93 yards and a score through two games. The (1-1) Hawks lost their top running back, Blaise Ernst, to a broken leg early last Friday night. Sophomore Thomas Johnson filled in with 16 carries for 41 yards. His 1-yard touchdown made it 21-14 with 4:22 left. Hamburg’s defense allowed just 239 total yards. Sophomore linebacker Bryce Schmeck leads the squad with 24 total tackles. Senior defensive lineman Astian Reppert (6’3, 235) is second with 19 tackles.

The Hawks gave head coach Tyler Hartranft his first career victory. “He’s a really great coach. He’s a very smart guy,” remarked McFadden. Hartranft returned to Hawk Hill after serving as the offensive coordinator at Pottsville a season ago. He was Hamburg’s OC in 2022 and 2023. The King’s College graduate coached at his alma mater from 2015-18. He then became the passing game coordinator at McDaniel College. In the offseason, McFadden works with former Wilson High School and Michigan standout Chad Henne. He spent fifteen years in the NFL with the Dolphins, Jaguars, and Chiefs. “He’s won two Super Bowls so I learned a lot from him,” said McFadden.

The Hawks host Bristol this Friday. The Warriors fell to Palisades 21-15 before defeating Pottstown 14-8. McFadden has completed 59% of his passes for 304 yards and 2 TD. He hasn’t thrown an interception. Hamburg’s offensive line includes a freshman and two sophomores. There are only nine seniors on the roster. “We have a lot of young guys on our team that start. They’re gonna build off of that as they get older. I feel like we’re gonna be a very good football team in the future,” replied McFadden.

Lebron Leaf-Gov. Mifflin https://berkssportsreport.com/lebron-leaf-gov-mifflin/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 19:38:25 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5060 The football doesn’t end up in the air too much when Gov. Mifflin is on offense. The Mustangs have had a lot of success with their triple-option attack. In Week 1, they ran the ball 44 times and attempted just four passes. Senior quarterback Lebron Leaf is willing to do whatever it takes to win. “I’m originally a running back so I bring a running back style to the quarterback room. At the end of the day, I can do both,” he replied. Leaf ran 13 times for 68 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-20 victory at Pleasant Valley. “That result was a show of our hard work this offseason and pushing ourselves to the limit. That was a big win,” said Leaf. Gov. Mifflin rumbled for 280 yards on the ground. Senior fullback Nick Kalis had 68 yards and a score on 13 carries. Pat Steuer added 52 rushing yards and a touchdown. The 5’8, 140-pound junior also took a kickoff 84 yards to the house. Tight end Derek Dinatale, wide receiver Joe Murray, and running back Cam Overley are some other skill position players who should make an impact this fall in Shillington.

The Mustangs only returned three starters on offense and five on defense in Nick Morrissey’s second year as head coach. “We lost a lot of key parts of our offensive line last year, but a lot of young guys are stepping up,” noted Leaf. The right side of the line includes Noah Viruet at tackle and Dylan Worley at guard. Both seniors start on defense as well. Viruet stands 6’1 and tips the scale at 336 pounds. Worley (6’, 243) was voted a first team guard and second team linebacker in Section 2 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League last season. Leaf described him as “very strong, very physical, very scrappy.”

Leaf is an all-around athlete and terrific leader. The 6’2, 197-pound senior missed the entire basketball season due to a shoulder injury that he suffered while playing football last fall. Leaf was named a second team safety in Section 2 after making 50 tackles and an interception. He carried a 3.6 GPA during his junior year. The Mustangs are looking to improve upon their (5-6, 3-3) mark in 2024. They moved up to Class 6A and ran into Cumberland Valley in the first round of the District 3 playoffs. Gov. Mifflin fell to the eighth-seeded Eagles 44-12.

The Mustangs are preparing for their home opener against Perkiomen Valley. The Vikings defeated Gov. Mifflin 31-14 a season ago. As for the keys to this Friday’s matchup, Leaf said, “controlling the ball, being smart with the ball, not turning over the ball, and doing the little things right.” He added, “If we all do our jobs and we execute, we’re gonna come out and dominate. They’re a great team. We just gotta stick to our game plan.” Leaf will be a big part of the game plan in Shillington this year.

Riley Martinez-Exeter https://berkssportsreport.com/riley-martinez-exeter/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 23:33:03 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5015 Riley Martinez suffered a fractured fibula in his right leg during a Week 7 matchup with Muhlenberg last year. That injury has given Exeter’s quarterback a new perspective. “I learned I can’t take anything for granted…it’s been a long journey,” remarked Martinez. The 6’3, 205-pound senior burst onto the scene in Reiffton as a sophomore when he threw for nearly 1,400 yards and 17 touchdowns. Despite missing time last fall, Martinez finished with 1,016 passing yards and 16 TD. He took care of the football, ending the season with just three interceptions.

The (12-2, 5-1) Eagles reached the District 3 Championship for the third time in four years. After falling to Bishop McDevitt 48-14, Martinez said they took about two weeks off and then got right back to work. That meant hitting the weight room from 5:45-7:30am. “It’s been a grind, but we all lead our younger guys to want to be as great as we can on and off the field,” noted Martinez. Exeter returns seven starters on each side of the ball. The Eagles have great depth at tight end including Aidan Dauble, Braylon Reinert, and Berks Catholic transfer Jackson Kozik. Dauble (16 ppg.) and Reinert were starters on Exeter’s basketball team, along with WR/DB Jayden Ware. Dauble, a three-year starter, piled up 67 tackles in 2024. The 6’2, 215-pound senior was voted a first team linebacker in Section 2 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Ware (6’, 160) had seven touchdown receptions and a team-high three interceptions. Jake Hafer and Jake Franek, both baseball players, will join Ware in the receiving corps this fall. Hafer filled in admirably at quarterback when Martinez was hurt last season. The speedy Leo Brown has big shoes to fill at running back. All-State selection Jayden Zandier set single season and career rushing records last year. Zandier ran for 2,086 yards and 30 TD a season ago. Logan Wegman, another All-State pick, has moved on to the Naval Academy. However, the Eagles return three starters on the offensive line. Joel Ummarino, Kevin Oswalt, and Andre Osborne are back in the trenches. Ummarino (6’1, 270) was a first team DL and a second team OL in Section 2 last year. He racked up 12.5 tackles for loss. Oswalt won the BCIAA individual wrestling championship at 215 pounds as a sophomore. He was named a second team OL/DL in Section 2 in 2024. Exeter has put together 14 consecutive winning seasons, and Martinez likes how this group is getting along. “We’re gonna have the better chemistry so we can outperform them on the field, even if they’re better on paper,” he replied.

Matt Bauer is entering his 17th season at the helm. He owns the school record for victories with 125. The Eagles have won 106 games over the past twelve years. Exeter opens its season versus rival Daniel Boone on August 22nd at Don Thomas Stadium. This will be their 67th meeting. The Eagles haven’t lost to the Blazers since 2011. Exeter travels to Conestoga Valley in Week 9 for a key Section 2 battle. The Buckskins prevailed 28-27 in the regular season last year, but the Eagles got revenge with a 48-14 rout in the District 3-5A semifinals. Exeter has qualified for the District 3 tournament 13 times in the past 14 seasons. Martinez is healthy and looking to do big things this fall. “We’re gonna try and put on a show this year,” he stated.

Madyx Gruber-Wilson https://berkssportsreport.com/madyx-gruber-wilson-3/ Sat, 26 Oct 2024 06:12:44 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4521 It was fitting that Manheim Township’s final possession ended with an interception by Madyx Gruber. The 5’11, 160-pound senior threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score in a 34-16 victory at Neffsville. The (9-1, 6-0) Bulldogs claimed their record 29th Section 1 championship in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. “It feels so awesome. This is what we work for all season. I can’t even put words to describe it,” said Gruber. The (9-1, 5-1) Blue Streaks had won 21 of their previous 22 games. They were ranked #5 in the state in Class 6A by PennLive. Wilson marched 77 yards on 13 plays to begin this heavyweight battle. A tremendous leaping 20-yard reception by Christo Hunsicker on fourth-and-3 set up Correll Akings’ 1-yard score. Manheim Township responded by going 62 yards in just four plays. Declan Clancy broke free for a 42-yard run. The physical 195-pound senior capped the drive from five yards out. Clancy finished with 137 yards on 27 carries. He surpassed 1,600 rushing yards for the season. Early in the second quarter, Gruber scrambled to his left and launched a pass to Akings down the sideline for a 65-yard touchdown. Akings had 16 carries for 52 yards. The 5’10, 170-pound junior added three catches for 79 yards. “He’s a special athlete,” noted Gruber. They’re basketball teammates in the winter. The Bulldogs put together an 85-yard drive before halftime. Gruber found sophomore Michael Glover in the left corner of the end zone for a 10-yard TD. A two-point conversion run by Akings made it 22-7 with 2:35 remaining in the second period. The Blue Streaks got the ball first in the second half and went 57 yards on eleven plays. Taylor Veilleux, a 260-pound fullback, crashed in from the 1-yard line, however, the extra point was not good. Manheim Township trailed 22-13. Johnny Morales kicked a 21-yard field goal with 16 seconds left in the third quarter to cut Wilson’s lead to 22-16. The play of the night came with seven minutes to go. Gruber heaved the ball over the middle and Brady Kline made the reception between two defenders. The 235-pound tight end raced 15 yards for a 41-yard touchdown. “I was in disbelief…I underthrew him. It was a pretty bad ball and he made a play. I gotta give all the props to Brady,” replied Gruber. The two-point conversion failed, but the Bulldogs’ edge had grown to 28-16. With six minutes remaining, Wilson stuffed the Blue Streaks on fourth-and-1 at the 29-yard line. The Bulldogs took advantage of the short field. Gruber’s 4-yard touchdown run created a 34-16 cushion with 1:37 on the clock. He provided 55 rushing yards on 16 carries. Gruber’s mobility is a huge asset. “It’s really important. If I don’t have any receivers open, I’m gonna try to get the yards with my legs,” he explained. The converted wide receiver was 11-of-18 for 207 yards and one interception. Gruber, who also plays cornerback, picked off Carson Weisser’s deep ball at the 1-yard line with 19 seconds left. Weisser was 10-of-27 for 123 yards. Wilson outgained Manheim Township 376-312. The Blue Streaks entered the night averaging 39 points per game. They struggled in short yardage situations, and were hurt by ten penalties for 128 yards. Wilson’s defense adjusted quickly after Manheim Township’s opening drive. The Bulldogs will get a bye in the District 3-6A tournament. Their first playoff game will be on Friday, November 8th. “We’re not done yet,” stated Gruber.

Madyx Gruber-Wilson https://berkssportsreport.com/madyx-gruber-wilson-2/ Sat, 28 Sep 2024 13:05:05 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4462 Over the course of a 48-minute game, mistakes will happen. The question becomes how do athletes handle adversity. Madyx Gruber passed that test with flying colors. Wilson’s senior quarterback overcame an interception in the red zone on the opening drive and led the Bulldogs to a 43-20 victory at Gov. Mifflin. Gruber tied the school record with five touchdown passes. He finished 15-of-20 for 232 yards. The basketball standout also ran for a career-high 204 yards on 19 carries. “I’m super proud of the team. We came into this game so prepared, probably more prepared than ever. I’m just so excited,” said Gruber. The (5-1) Bulldogs outgained the (3-3) Mustangs 532-to-243 in their 67th meeting. Wilson holds a (40-27) advantage in the heated rivalry. The Bulldogs racked up 300 rushing yards while averaging 7.9 yards per carry. They had 26 first downs, 15 more than Gov. Mifflin. Two of Gruber’s TD passes went to junior Jaiden Carpenter on wide receiver screens. “We seen that on film. We know that their cornerbacks like to play off a little bit. We just took what they gave us,” explained Gruber. The Mustangs’ defensive tackles, Ismael Ayala Vargas and Noah Viruet, are 335 and 345 pounds respectively. Jeremy Palm, in his 24th year as Wilson’s offensive coordinator, opted to attack the edge. “We knew that they had bigger guys up front and that we could probably get to the outside. Our game plan was outside zone a lot,” revealed Gruber. On a rainy night, Bulldogs’ punter Christo Hunsicker lost a fumble at the 12-yard line early in the second quarter. Javien Pletz’s 10-yard run up the middle gave Gov. Mifflin a 14-7 lead. Wilson responded with a 86-yard drive that included an incredible 37-yard catch by sophomore Michael Glover. The 6’3, 220-pound tight end had three receptions for 85 yards. His grab over a defender set up Gruber’s 4-yard TD pass to sophomore running back Monty Greer. After a penalty on the Mustangs during the extra point, the Bulldogs went for a 2-point conversion. Gruber found Hunsicker wide open for a 15-14 lead with four minutes left in the first half. Wilson got the ball back and drove 70 yards in only 66 seconds. Gruber connected with junior running back Correll Akings in the right corner of the end zone for a 10-yard score. The Bulldogs were in front 22-14 at the break. Akings added 58 yards on 10 carries. Gov. Mifflin pulled within 29-20 when Pletz broke free for a 45-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. The 2-point conversion was stuffed. Wilson replied with a 79-yard drive that was capped by Gruber’s 17-yard strike over the middle to senior tight end Brady Kline. Just 47 seconds later, Akings returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown. Pletz ended up 1-of-7 for 24 yards. The senior quarterback ran for 82 yards on six carries. Grady Garner, a 200-pound senior fullback, rumbled for 127 yards and a score on 23 touches. The Mustangs accumulated 219 yards on the ground, but the Bulldogs held the ball for nearly 29 minutes. There were twenty total penalties, including eleven for 120 yards against Wilson. Sophomore linebacker E.J. Brownback led the Bulldogs with ten tackles and a sack. Wilson has won eleven of the past fourteen contests with Gov. Mifflin. The series began in 1954. Gruber was the main character in this chapter of the rivalry.

Javien Pletz-Gov. Mifflin https://berkssportsreport.com/javien-pletz-gov-mifflin/ Thu, 26 Sep 2024 14:28:08 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4456 If Javien Pletz was grading his football team, the Mustangs would receive a B- at the midway point of the season. “There’s some room for improvement. The line has been doing their job. It’s just little mistakes like fumbles,” explained Pletz. Gov. Mifflin is (3-2) and coming off a 41-6 rout of Muhlenberg. Pletz had two touchdown passes and a pair of touchdown runs on Sunday afternoon. The 5’10, 155-pound senior doesn’t get to put the ball up in the air much. That’s just part of playing quarterback in Shillington. The Mustangs prefer to grind it out on the ground. Pletz has only attempted 47 passes this year. He’s completed 25 of them for 424 yards and three scores. Grady Garner has been a workhorse at fullback. The 5’10, 200-pound senior has racked up 712 yards and 13 TD on 119 carries. “He runs hard, runs fast. It’s hard to tackle him,” said Pletz. Garner is a sprinter on the track and field team. Pletz can also use his legs. He can be tough to find behind an offensive line that averages nearly 250 pounds and includes Presley Rinker. The senior guard is 6’1 and 305 pounds. Pletz has 128 rushing yards on 28 carries. Reese Hohl, Travis Jenkins, and Lebron Leaf are slotbacks that can be effective on the edge. Gov. Mifflin also has a solid tight end in 190-pound junior Derek Dinatale. Nick Morrissey is in his first season as head coach, but a familiar face is calling the plays. Mick Vecchio is back on the sidelines. He won 181 games over 26 years with the Mustangs. Vecchio was inducted into the PSFCA Hall of Fame in 2022. Gov. Mifflin’s losses have come against quality opponents in Exeter and Perkiomen Valley. The Eagles remain undefeated. The Mustangs have another tough matchup this Friday when Wilson visits Shillington. The (4-1) Bulldogs have taken ten of the last thirteen contests in this heated rivalry. Gov. Mifflin and Wilson are squaring off for the 67th time. The Bulldogs hold a (39-27) edge in the series. “We just gotta run the offense, make sure they don’t get the ball as much. We just chew that clock and don’t make any mistakes,” said Pletz.

Evan Myers-Twin Valley https://berkssportsreport.com/evan-myers-twin-valley-3/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 12:18:20 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4383 On the first play from scrimmage, Evan Myers rolled to his right and found Matthew Knight over the middle for a 49-yard gain. All of Twin Valley’s offensive weapons were on display in a 42-16 victory at Berks Catholic. The Raiders, who are coming off a 10-win season, piled up 512 total yards. Twin Valley came out with an uptempo attack. “It’s great to see some teams panting and gasping for air,” said Myers. The four-year starter was 9-of-14 for 236 yards and two touchdowns. He added 112 yards and another score on the ground on just five carries. “We’re only as good as our linemen will be and they had a good day. They’ve proven that their hard work has been paying off,” replied Myers. The front five for the Raiders average 278 pounds. Left tackle Aris Drake (6’5, 295) is committed to Navy. Carter Faubel, a 270-pound transfer from Delaware Valley, is a physical presence at left guard and defensive tackle. Center Noah DiGiacomo (5’11, 235) and right guard Greyson Miller (6’1, 255) both started as sophomores a season ago. Junior Zach Troutman (6’2, 335) has stepped in at right tackle. Myers raced untouched down the right sideline for a 45-yard TD midway through the opening quarter. He then rolled left and went deep to Knight for a 44-yard TD pass with 33 seconds remaining in the first period. Berks Catholic punter Devyn Sutton fumbled a snap early in the second quarter which was returned seven yards for a score by Ryan Rementer. After a 29-yard field goal by Tyler Osorio got the Saints on the board, sophomore Lucas Myers capped a 72-yard drive with a 2-yard run that came 28 seconds before halftime. Drew Engle bounced a handoff down the right sideline for a 42-yard TD three minutes into the second half. Engle, who had 77 yards on seven carries, made it 35-3. After Lucas Myers recovered a Berks Catholic fumble, Evan Myers lofted a 47-yard TD pass to Ben Grundy with 7:32 to go in the third quarter. That score put the mercy rule into effect. Grundy, a 6’1 junior, had four receptions for 91 yards. Evan Johnson chipped in with ten carries for 82 yards. The Saints scored twice in the final six minutes. Zach Suski tossed a 3-yard TD pass to junior fullback Nate Rose. Three minutes later, Faith Zudie blocked a Twin Valley punt and recovered it in the end zone. Berks Catholic ended up with 195 total yards in Dave Stahler’s debut as head coach. Rose finished with 55 yards on a dozen carries. Suski went 12-of-16 for 138 yards. The Saints lost Bryce Gumby and Gavin Welker to injuries in the first half. Meanwhile, Evan Myers got his senior campaign off to a terrific start. “High school football is a great atmosphere…While I’m enjoying my senior year already, it’s sad that we only have nine guaranteed games left,” he said.

Madyx Gruber-Wilson https://berkssportsreport.com/madyx-gruber-wilson/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 23:20:42 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4377 When a wide receiver catches nine touchdown passes in a season, he usually isn’t asked to switch positions. However, Wilson was searching for a new quarterback after All-State pick Tommy Hunsicker graduated. The Bulldogs have settled on Madyx Gruber. “It’s a process, but I’m ready for it,” responded Gruber. The 5’11, 160-pound rising senior had 28 catches for 461 yards in 2023. Fortunately, Gruber has some good teachers to help him learn his new role. Offensive coordinator Jeremy Palm has been on Wilson’s staff for 24 seasons. Assistant coach Chad Henne spent 15 years in the NFL and won two Super Bowls. “He knows exactly what the defense is gonna do and he tells me who’s gonna be open. It’s just amazing what he knows,” Gruber said of Henne. The Bulldogs begin their 80th season on Saturday at 1pm against Cheltenham. The game was moved to Upper Merion High School because Cheltenham’s field isn’t ready. Wilson returns just four starters on offense and two on defense from a (7-4, 5-1) squad. The Bulldogs finished second in Section 1 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League behind Manheim Township. They fell to fourth-seeded Cumberland Valley 20-14 in the District 3-6A quarterfinals. Gruber’s basketball teammate Correll Akings is back at running back. The rising junior ran for 468 yards and seven touchdowns on 80 carries last fall. Gruber and Akings will hold down the cornerback position as well. Gruber, an All-County selection in hoops, came up with three of Wilson’s seven interceptions a season ago. Senior guard Derek Reiniger is the only returning starter on the offensive line. The good news is that the Bulldogs have a very talented and deep tight end room. Brady Kline, Michael Glover, Cam Zullinger, and Christo Hunsicker are all in the mix. Expect Wilson to use a lot of sets with multiple tight ends. Hunsicker led the Bulldogs with 64 tackles, 9.5 TFL, and three sacks in 2023. The 6’2, 195-pound outside linebacker is also a standout baseball player. Zullinger and Glover, a 220-pound sophomore, combined for 12 TFL and four sacks at defensive end. Safety Monty Greer and linebacker EJ Brownback are two other promising sophomores. Wilson allowed 25.5 points and 297 yards per game last year. The Bulldogs sit on 600 all-time victories. They’ve won a record 28 Section 1 championships and seven District 3 titles. Wilson holds the state record with 48 consecutive winning seasons. “Our expectations don’t change. We want to win. We want to get that L-L championship. We want to get the district [championship] and then see how far we get in State’s,” stated Gruber.
