The boys from Shillington are hoping to have more success on the gridiron this fall. Gov. Mifflin hasn’t had a winning season since 2021 when Nick Singleton was in the backfield. The Mustangs were well known as a team that liked to grind it out, but that changed last year. Over their final four games, they shifted away from the triple-option and Wing-T schemes. That change will remain in 2026. Expect to see Jack Miller in the shotgun and a willingness to put the ball in the air. “I love it, our coaches love it, and our team loves it. We’ve been running Wing-T as long as I can remember so it’s definitely a great change. It’s exciting, something new,” emphasized Steuer.

Miller, a 5’10 sophomore, is taking over at quarterback for Lebron Leaf. Steuer will often be lined up next to Miller with Trever King at slotback. Steuer has been impressed with the young quarterback. “No complaints at all, he’s a natural leader. Makes good reads, he’s gonna have a good season for sure,” replied Steuer. Gaetano Campitelli, a 6’ senior wide receiver, will be one of Miller’s primary targets. King (5’6, 160) gives Gov. Mifflin another small, elusive option. “I’ve got very high hopes for that kid. He’s athletic, he can run, he can hit, and he’s shifty. He’s all of the above. He’s a great player,” remarked Steuer. Sophomore Lucas Kreider is another slotback to keep an eye on.

The Mustangs return just four starters on offense and three on defense. They only have 42 players on the roster, down from 55 a season ago. Gov. Mifflin has dropped to Class 5A. Steuer ran for nearly 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns last fall. He was a second team selection at outside linebacker in Section 2 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Seniors David Facey, Gunnar Gebhart, and Jordan Leinbach will be counted on up front. Facey should be a force along the line of scrimmage at 6’2 and 260 pounds. “I’m expecting a lot out of him. He’s a big guy, hard hitter, very vocal guy,” noted Steuer.

The Mustangs are coming off a (4-7, 1-5) season. They rolled over Pocono Mountain West 51-14 in the Eastern Conference 5A/6A Championship. Nick Morrissey and his coaching staff were pleased with how they fared against Twin Valley during Saturday’s scrimmage. The Raiders were the PIAA-4A runner-up in 2025. This is Morrissey’s third year as head coach in Shillington. The Albright graduate was an assistant at his alma mater, Muhlenberg, from 2008-14 before coming to Gov. Mifflin as an OL/DL coach in 2015. Morrissey knows that his squad faces a big challenge this Friday night when they host rival Wilson. The Bulldogs defeated the Mustangs 42-10 in their 68th meeting last season. “They’re a good team. We’re excited to see how we’re gonna do against them. It’s gonna be fun,” said Steuer.
