high school – Berks Sports Report https://berkssportsreport.com Paul Roberts Sat, 22 Nov 2025 13:20:18 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 Maverik Foster-Twin Valley https://berkssportsreport.com/maverik-foster-twin-valley/ Sat, 22 Nov 2025 13:15:37 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5264 Twin Valley’s offensive line was like a boxer targeting his opponent’s ribs. It was one body blow after another after another. The Raiders turned the District 3-4A Championship into a war of attrition. Drew Engle and Lucas Myers combined for 50 carries in a 41-21 victory over Susquehanna Township on Friday at ELCO. “Coming out of the half, Coach Myers was emphasizing ‘keep cutting the tree down.’ You’re not gonna take one swing and the tree is gonna fall. Our line kept going at them, hitting them, and eventually we broke through,” said quarterback Maverik Foster. Twin Valley finished with 461 total yards including 387 on the ground. The (13-0) Raiders claimed their first District 3 title in program history. They outscored the (12-1) Indians 21-0 in the second half.

Engle piled up 281 yards and 3 TD on 31 carries. The Army lacrosse commit holds school records for single-season rushing yards (1,855) and career rushing yards (3,971). “He’s a great leader. He’s a great guy to be around. [He] holds people accountable and just wants to be better than he was yesterday,” replied Foster. The 5’11, 185-pound senior also owns Twin Valley’s record for career touchdowns with 60. Engle’s 2-yard TD run tied the game at 7-7 after Xavier Rivera broke free for a 61-yard score on the opening series. Engle raced 35 yards on the Raiders’ first play from scrimmage and he was just getting warmed up. He added a 30-yard run on their second possession. Myers capped off that 43-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. Seven minutes into the contest, there were already 21 combined points on the scoreboard. That wasn’t a big surprise. Twin Valley entered the night averaging 53 points and Susquehanna Township was putting up 42 ppg.

Torin Evans, who decommitted from Marist this week, showed off his elusiveness with a nifty 20-yard touchdown scamper that made it 14-14 with 8:33 left in the second quarter. That score was set up by Evans’ 40-yard pass to Steph Malette. Evans only threw five interceptions in the Indians’ first twelve games, but he was picked off by Grant Moser and James Alexy in the first half. The 6’, 175-pound southpaw ended the season with 37 touchdown passes and another 13 rushing scores. Evans launched a 67-yard TD pass to Syracuse commit Zi’khere Leaks with 42 seconds remaining in the first half. The third-seeded Raiders responded 22 seconds later when Engle sprinted down the right sideline for a 52-yard touchdown. The extra point was no good so the top-seeded Indians were in front 21-20 at halftime.

Foster noted that his coaches and the leaders on the team told him to calm down during the break. He acknowledged that he couldn’t get into a rhythm in the first 24 minutes. The 5’11, 175-pound sophomore made some pivotal plays in the second half. Foster connected with Ben Grundy over the middle for a 55-yard touchdown pass less than two minutes into the third quarter. Twin Valley held a 27-21 advantage before embarking on a 16-play, 82-yard drive that lasted eight and a-half minutes. On fourth-and-3, Foster faked an inside handoff to Engle and ran 24 yards down the left sideline to put the Raiders on top 34-21 with 10:34 to go. “Coach Myers trusted me to make reads so we ran the RPO [run-pass option]. Joey Buckley had a great block for me, Drew Engle carried out his fake, and I saw the lane and took off,” explained Foster. On Twin Valley’s next series, Engle went 32 yards off the left side for a touchdown on fourth-and-6. The Raiders were in firm control at 41-21 with 6:22 to play.

Susquehanna Township got inside the 5-yard line with four minutes left, but Foster and Ryan Rementer came up with sacks to turn the Indians away. Myers, a 215-pound junior, racked up a team-high ten tackles. He also ran for 78 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Rementer, who plays next to Myers at linebacker, added nine tackles. Junior defensive end Andrew Cabigas and Keenan Munn chipped in with seven tackles apiece. Susquehanna Township had 391 total yards, but couldn’t score in the second half. The Indians fell to (0-4) all-time in District 3 championship games.

Foster was an efficient 4-of-6 for 74 yards. The first-year starter is completing 72% of his passes this season. He’s thrown for 1,219 yards with 16 TD passes and no interceptions. The Raiders will take on 5-time state champion Aliquippa next week in the PIAA-4A semifinals. “I’m proud of every single person on this team. I love every single one of them. I wouldn’t want to do it with any other people, but we got two more weeks of grinding,” said Foster.

“Roberts Rankings”-Football https://berkssportsreport.com/roberts-rankings-football-69/ Mon, 22 Sep 2025 16:23:38 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5138 Six of the eight teams in my poll won last week. The top four remains the same, but there are a few changes. Muhlenberg moved up one spot and Berks Catholic climbed two positions. Conrad Weiser fell from #5 to #8 after its 20-7 loss at Manheim Central. The second half of the schedule will be tougher for the Scouts.

It should be noted that this poll is based solely upon results from this year. For example, Gov. Mifflin had won 21 straight games against Muhlenberg entering Friday’s matchup in Laureldale. The Mustangs, however, were one spot behind the Muhls in last week’s rankings. I believed that Muhlenberg was playing better and healthier than Gov. Mifflin at this point in the season. The Muhls defeated the Mustangs 35-17 to stay unbeaten.

Exeter, Wyomissing, and Twin Valley are still perfect as well. The Eagles travel to Ephrata this week. The (4-1) Mounts only loss came against Conestoga Valley 31-7.

The Spartans meet Donegal at Bob Wolfrum Field on Saturday afternoon. The Indians are (2-3). Meanwhile, Twin Valley takes on Northern Lebanon this Friday in Elverson. The (1-4) Vikings have dropped four in a row.

Wilson and Gov. Mifflin square off for the 68th time on Friday at John Gurski Stadium. The Bulldogs lead the series (40-27). Wilson has taken 11 of the past 14 meetings. The Mustangs are dealing with injuries to several starters. The Bulldogs beat them 43-20 last year.

Muhlenberg hosts Elizabethtown in Week 6. The (3-2) Bears stumbled against Ephrata 20-14 last week.

Berks Catholic has won three of its last four contests. The Saints battle Schuylkill Valley in Leesport on Friday. Both teams are (2-0) in the Section 5 standings. The Panthers won 20-14 at Berks Catholic a season ago.

Conrad Weiser makes the trip to Solanco this week. The Golden Mules are riding a four-game winning streak. They lost their opener to Lampeter-Strasburg 45-44 in overtime. All-State running back Johnny Garcia has rumbled for 707 yards and nine touchdowns this year.

Without further ado, here is this week’s poll. Remember that no matter where your favorite team is ranked, the sun will come out tomorrow!

“The Great 8”

1.Exeter (5-0)

2.Wyomissing (5-0)

3.Wilson (4-1)

4.Twin Valley (5-0)

5.Muhlenberg (5-0)

6.Berks Catholic (3-2)

7.Gov. Mifflin (2-3)

8.Conrad Weiser (4-1)

Chase Eisenhower-Wyomissing https://berkssportsreport.com/chase-eisenhower-wyomissing-3/ Sun, 21 Sep 2025 16:40:50 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5135 Wyomissing’s backfield gets a lot of attention and rightfully so. They have speed, power, depth, and experience at halfback and fullback. The Spartans’ defense, however, should not be overlooked. They’ve allowed a total of seven points in their last three games. Wyomissing limited ELCO to six first downs in a 42-7 rout on Saturday afternoon at Bob Wolfrum Field. “Everyone is a dog on that defense. I don’t know any other defense I’d rather play with,” said Chase Eisenhower. The 6’, 220-pound senior FB/LB is Wyomissing’s leading tackler. The (5-0, 2-0) Spartans held the (1-4, 0-2) Raiders to 107 yards. ELCO’s only touchdown, an 11-yard run by Brinley Donmoyer, came with nine minutes remaining when Wyomissing’s first team defense was on the bench. “Our coaches prepare us every week for what we gotta do. They set us up great so we know what we’re doing and we go out and execute every single play,” replied Eisenhower. Justice Hardy and Diamante Strong, both juniors, made one-handed interceptions which led to touchdowns for the Spartans. Eisenhower is a four-year starter, and fellow linebacker Tyler Niedrowski has been starting for three years.

Hardy’s 14-yard touchdown run capped a 55-yard drive on Wyomissing’s first possession. Just ninety seconds later, the All-State pick came up with a spectacular interception at the Raiders’ 40-yard line. ELCO was penalized for roughing senior kicker Keegan Maher on a 25-yard field goal which gave the Spartans a first down. Eisenhower barreled into the end zone from four yards out for a 14-0 edge with 1:36 left in the first quarter. A 19-yard touchdown run off the left side by Marcus Armistead made it 21-0 midway through the second period. Dom Arguelles went off the left side as well for a 7-yard score with five minutes to go before halftime. Brady Eisenhower, Chase’s younger brother, rolled out and hit Hardy in stride down the left sideline for a 37-yard touchdown pass. Wyomissing’s lead had quickly been extended to 35-0 with 2:35 to play before the break. Brady Eisenhower was 2-of-2 for 50 yards. The 6’, 155-pound sophomore is 17-of-22 for 246 yards this year with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. “I don’t think I have enough words to talk about how he’s doing. He’s doing phenomenal. He’s leading our offense and I couldn’t be more happy for him,” emphasized Chase Eisenhower. Teddy White, who started at quarterback last season, found Ethan Betances for an 8-yard touchdown pass with 2:16 remaining in the third quarter. That 78-yard drive lasted nine and a-half minutes and made it 42-0. The Spartans ended up with 406 yards including 331 on the ground. Hardy, who recently received an offer from Temple, had 52 yards on four carries. The 190-pound junior added a pair of receptions for 50 yards.

Wyomissing, Twin Valley, and Lampeter-Strasburg are all (2-0) in the Section 4 standings of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. The Spartans are ranked #4 in the state in Class 4A by PennLive. The Pioneers were the PIAA-4A runner-up in 2024. The Raiders have outscored their opponents 283-46 this year. “I’d be lying if I said we didn’t look at it. We definitely do, but we don’t put too much thought into it. We know we gotta come ready for each game. We’re not looking ahead,” said Eisenhower.

Mike Miller-Muhlenberg Muhls https://berkssportsreport.com/mike-miller-muhlenberg-muhls/ Sat, 20 Sep 2025 12:36:54 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5131 Mike Miller has been a starter on Muhlenberg’s football team for four years. He’s gone through some tough seasons. In 2022 and 2023, the Muhls won a total of three games. The winds of change, however, are blowing through Laureldale. Muhlenberg ended a 21-game losing streak to Gov. Mifflin and improved to (5-0, 2-0) with a 35-17 victory on Friday. “It’s a great feeling because we all worked for this in the offseason. The work is showing,” said Miller. The 6’, 185-pound wide receiver and safety scored three touchdowns against the (2-3, 0-2) Mustangs. He had a 49-yard pick-6 that put the Muhls on top 21-3 with 1:09 left in the first half. Miller took advantage of something he saw a play or two earlier. “It was the same route concept. I jumped the under route and took it to the house,” he explained. Gov. Mifflin committed three turnovers before halftime.

The Mustangs went up 3-0 on Lance Koenig’s 22-yard field goal with 6:37 remaining in the second quarter. Gov. Mifflin settled for three points after a holding penalty on third-and-goal from the 1-yard line. There were 24 combined penalties, including 13 for 115 yards against Muhlenberg. After falling behind, the Muhls answered with 28 straight points. Adriel Baez hit a wide open Freddy Lacey for a 48-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter. The sophomore quarterback was 8-of-12 for 115 yards and two scores. “He’s put in so much work and I’m so proud of the way he’s progressing. I love it,” replied Miller. Cam Small recovered a fumble at the Mustangs’ 19-yard line with 4:48 to play in the first half. Baez used his legs on the ensuing possession. His 6-yard touchdown run made it 14-3 with 1:40 to go before the break. Miller’s interception gave Muhlenberg all of the momentum going into the locker room.

The Muhls opened the second half with a 93-yard drive that took seven and a-half minutes. Baez flipped a pop pass to Miller who went eight yards for a 28-3 advantage. Gov. Mifflin freshman Lucas Kreider responded immediately with a 72-yard kickoff return touchdown. Senior cornerback Isaiah Massillon recovered a fumble for the Mustangs on the first play of the fourth quarter. Lebron Leaf capped a 56-yard series with a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line, and Muhlenberg’s lead was trimmed to 28-17 with 8:32 left. Gov. Mifflin got the ball back at its 16-yard line with 2:44 remaining, but managed just six yards. Miller then bounced off tacklers for a 15-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds on the clock. He finished with nine carries for 45 yards and another 54 yards on five receptions. Small, an All-State running back, produced 126 yards on 26 carries.

The Mustangs could never get their triple-option attack going and were outgained 298-to-196. They only had two possessions in the second half, and were limited to 91 rushing yards on the night. Miller summed up the Muhls’ defensive scheme in two words, “assignment football.” Gov. Mifflin was missing four starters due to injury, including Dylan Worley and fullback Nick Kalis. Worley was a first team guard and second team linebacker in Section 2 a season ago. The banged up Mustangs visit rival Wilson next week.

Meanwhile, Muhlenberg has outscored its opponents 234-52 at the midway point of the regular season. “We just touched the surface. We can get more explosive than we are right now,” said Miller. The Muhls have already won more games than their 2024 campaign when they went (4-7, 1-5). Former Reading and Daniel Boone head coach Rob Flowers is in his second year at Muhlenberg. “He always brings positive vibes and love to every single one of the players on the team,” emphasized Miller.

Drew Engle-Twin Valley https://berkssportsreport.com/drew-engle-twin-valley-2/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 13:23:25 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5124 Special teams play is not an afterthought at Twin Valley. It’s a priority for the undefeated Raiders who are ranked #6 in the state in Class 4A. “We emphasize them a ton at practice. We’re always putting in different things. We work really hard on special teams,” said running back and safety Drew Engle. The third phase of the game was pivotal in a 49-7 rout of Octorara on Thursday night.

Twin Valley led 7-0 early in the second quarter when Dominic Summers blocked a punt which set up the Raiders at the 3-yard line. Engle’s 2-yard run made it 14-0 with eight and a-half minutes remaining in the first half. On the ensuing possession, Twin Valley brought heavy pressure again on fourth down and the Braves weren’t able to get off a punt. Ryan Rementer capped a 33-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run on a counter. The Raiders kept momentum in their favor as Keenan Munn recovered an onside kick at Octorara’s 41-yard line. After a penalty, Lucas Myers broke free up the middle for a 46-yard touchdown run and a 28-0 advantage. Munn recovered a fumble on the next series which gave Twin Valley the ball at the Braves’ 31-yard line. Engle took it from there with a dazzling touchdown run. He started up the middle, got bottled up, bounced it to the left, cut back across the entire field, and raced down the right sideline for a 31-yard score. The Army lacrosse commit put the Raiders in front 35-0 with 4:38 left before halftime. “I bounced it outside and saw a couple more guys out there so I went the other way. It just opened up. My O-line does a fantastic job blocking for me and it starts with them,” explained Engle. After using its timeouts, Twin Valley got the ball back with 1:30 to go in the first half. Ben Grundy took a quick pop pass from Maverik Foster and sprinted 62-yards down the left sideline. After a scoreless first quarter, the (5-0, 2-0) Raiders exploded for 42 points in just ten minutes. “I think we were fired up, a little bit mad we didn’t score,” replied Engle.

Myers ripped off a 62-yard touchdown run down the right sideline to extend the lead to 49-0 with 5:18 to play in the third quarter. “He’s one of the hardest workers on the team. It also keeps us fresh. He does give me a little bit of a break which is nice. I love working with him,” noted Engle. Myers finished with 132 yards on only seven carries. The 6’1, 215-pound junior reached the end zone three times. Engle added 82 yards and two scores on ten carries. The 5’11, 185-pound senior was named an All-American by USA Lacrosse earlier this year. Foster was 8-of-10 for 134 yards and a touchdown. Twin Valley piled up 413 total yards including 279 on the ground. The Raiders are averaging 56.6 points per game at the midway point of the regular season.

Octorara got on the scoreboard on the final play of the third quarter thanks to a 47-yard run by Brayden Mastripolitto. The 5’11, 175-pound junior entered the night with 631 rushing yards and 11 TD. The (3-2, 1-1) Braves were without starting quarterback Mason Prokay for the second straight game. Sophomore Gavin Davis was under center again due to Prokay’s injury. Prokay is a standout javelin thrower. The 6’3, 210-pound senior finished 11th at Nike Outdoor Nationals this summer. Twin Valley’s defense was spearheaded by Rementer. The 200-pound senior linebacker had a team-high seven tackles. The Raiders have outscored their opponents 283-46. “We’re just focused about getting better every day, never satisfied and just keep working hard,” said Engle.

District 3 Basketball Finals won’t be at Giant Center https://berkssportsreport.com/district-3-basketball-finals-wont-be-at-giant-center/ Wed, 17 Sep 2025 15:49:31 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5116 When basketball players and coaches in District 3 talk about their goals before the season, many of them mention making a trip to the Giant Center in Hershey. That dream won’t be possible in 2025-26. District 3 announced on Tuesday that the Giant Center is unavailable this season due to scheduling conflicts. Instead, the championship games will be held at high schools throughout the region. “Our communities consistently rally around student-athletes, and we’re confident the championship atmosphere will be just as exciting,” said District 3 Director of Communications Steve Navaroli. He added, “The District 3 Committee extends its gratitude to the Giant Center for many years of hosting and looks forward to returning in the future.”

There will be championship doubleheaders at two neutral locations on February 25, 26, and 27. Four games will take place each day. Specific sites will be announced once the matchups are set.

Berks Sports Report learned that Santander Arena in Reading was considered as a potential venue for the District 3 basketball championships. However, the Reading Royals have a home game on February 27.

“Roberts Rankings”-Football https://berkssportsreport.com/roberts-rankings-football-68/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 17:11:06 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5112 Seven of the top eight teams in my poll won last Friday. The only close game involved Conrad Weiser. The Scouts rallied to beat Fleetwood 26-23 in Robesonia. Five teams from Berks County remain undefeated. There are no changes in the “Roberts Rankings” this week.

Exeter takes on Lebanon this Friday in Reiffton. The Eagles have outscored their opponents 177-32. It’s been a much different story for the Cedars. They’ve lost 46 consecutive games. Muhlenberg rolled over Lebanon 55-21 last week.

Wyomissing meets ELCO at Bob Wolfrum Field on Saturday afternoon. The (1-3) Raiders got hammered by Twin Valley 60-0 on Friday. Paul Williams (6’3, 250) is the top player up front for ELCO. The Spartans are showing why they’re one of the top ranked teams in the state in Class 4A.

Wilson travels to Cedar Crest this week as Doug Dahms goes for his 200th career victory. The (2-2) Falcons soared past Penn Manor 40-15 on Friday. Isaiah Zimmerman has 474 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He ran for 1,500 yards a season ago.

Twin Valley squares off against Octorara in Week 5. Make a note that this Thursday night matchup begins at 6pm in Elverson. The Raiders have put up 234 points while allowing just 39 this year. The (3-1) Braves have knocked off Daniel Boone, Kutztown, and Hamburg.

It isn’t always pretty, but Conrad Weiser continues to find a way to get the job done. The Scouts venture to Manheim Central on Friday. The (2-2) Barons took down Bermudian Springs 21-6 last week. Manheim Central only won three games in 2024.

Muhlenberg battles Gov. Mifflin this week in Laureldale. The Muhls have outscored the opposition 199-35 this season. All-State running back Cam Small is averaging 10.6 yards per carry. He has 605 yards on the ground and eleven touchdowns. The Mustangs attempt to get back on track after falling at Exeter 43-15.

Lancaster Catholic at Berks Catholic looked like a marquee matchup before the season. The (2-2) Crusaders, however, have dropped two in a row. They were dismantled by Columbia 43-0 last week. That score raised a lot of eyebrows around the Lancaster-Lebanon League.

Without further ado, here is my poll for Berks County high school football. Remember that no matter where your favorite team is ranked, the sun will come out tomorrow!

“The Great 8”

1.Exeter (4-0)

2.Wyomissing (4-0)

3.Wilson (3-1)

4.Twin Valley (4-0)

5.Conrad Weiser (4-0)

6.Muhlenberg (4-0)

7.Gov. Mifflin (2-2)

8.Berks Catholic (2-2)

Leo Brown-Exeter https://berkssportsreport.com/leo-brown-exeter/ Sat, 13 Sep 2025 14:09:31 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5109 Leo Brown didn’t play football as a sophomore because he wanted to focus on track. Exeter head coach Matt Bauer stayed after Brown and he returned to the gridiron last season. The 6’, 176-pound speedster was the backup to All-State running back Jayden Zandier. Brown is the starter now and he’s making the most of the opportunity. “He’s still developing and it’s a pleasure to watch the progression. He’s a special young man,” said Bauer. Brown ran for 206 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries in a 43-15 victory over Gov. Mifflin at Don Thomas Stadium. “I really think tonight was his best game because he was patient and then he started hitting the afterburners,” explained Bauer. The (4-0) Eagles beat the (2-2) Mustangs for the fifth consecutive time. “Oh, my gosh! Out of all the people we play, our biggest rival is Mifflin. In any sport, it’s always them. It feels good to be able to put up that big of a score on them,” stated Brown.

Exeter went 51 yards on its opening drive and took a 7-0 lead on Brown’s 24-yard run up the middle. “We were able to get the momentum. Once we got that, we just kept rolling. It snowballs,” emphasized Brown. The Mustangs opted to go for it on fourth-and-1 from their own 39-yard line on the ensuing possession. Senior defensive lineman Andre Osborne tripped up fullback Nick Kalis for no gain. Jake Hafer then hit Aidan Dauble for a 36-yard gain. Hafer, who has stepped in again this year at quarterback for an injured Riley Martinez, ran two yards off the left side for a 14-0 advantage. On the final play of the first quarter, Hafer found a wide open Braylon Reinert. The 6’4, 225-pound tight end rumbled 54 yards to set up Brown’s 3-yard touchdown run. After a bad snap on the extra point, Jayden Ware threw the ball to Reinert for two points and a 22-0 edge with 11:18 remaining in the first half. The Mustangs got on the scoreboard six minutes later when quarterback Lebron Leaf bounced off tacklers down the left sideline for a 37-yard score. Leaf also made an interception late in the second quarter. Brown’s third touchdown came with 3:36 left before halftime. His 19-yard run capped a 74-yard drive and increased the Eagles’ lead to 29-7. Osborne, Joel Ummarino, Kevin Oswalt, Matt Lis, and Wyatt Richard opened big holes all night long. “I couldn’t ask for a better line. I love them, they make it happen. I’m just the one who puts the ball in the end zone. They’re the ones that create the way,” remarked Brown. His speed certainly helps. Brown ran the 200 meters in 22.3 seconds during the spring. He has already piled up 576 yards and nine touchdowns on 65 carries this year.

Ware started the second half with a bang. The 6’2, 160-pound senior returned the kickoff 95 yards to put Exeter in front 36-7. Ware had a punt return touchdown called back earlier in the game due to a penalty. The Eagles committed eleven penalties overall. Josh Jackson made it 43-7 on a 21-yard touchdown run with five minutes to play in the third quarter. The Mustangs got a 2-yard touchdown run from sophomore Trever King midway through the fourth quarter. Exeter outgained Gov. Mifflin 406-to-166. The Eagles churned out 310 yards on the ground.

Exeter brought back seven starters on each side of the ball from a team that went (12-2) in 2024. The Eagles finished second in Section 2 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. They lost to Bishop McDevitt 48-14 in the District 3-5A Championship. Brown has high hopes this fall. “We’re coming to win it all, without a doubt,” he said.
