Wyomissing used a four-run second inning to top Hamburg 5-1 on “Hawk Hill.” Chase Bailey held Hamburg to one unearned run on three hits in 5.2 innings. Teddy White provided two hits and two runs.

Berks Catholic hammered Brandywine Heights 16-1 in four innings. Henry Pflomm went 2-for-3 and drove in five runs.

Oley Valley cruised past Antietam 8-0. Nick DeBalko limited the Mounts to one hit in 4.2 innings. He struck out nine batters. The Lynx host Kutztown on Wednesday in a battle for first place in Division 4.

Singleton drafted by the Titans https://berkssportsreport.com/singleton-drafted-by-the-titans/ Mon, 27 Apr 2026 02:55:38 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5544 Another high school football star from Berks County is headed to the NFL. Gov. Mifflin graduate Nick Singleton was selected in the fifth round by the Titans. “It felt amazing, especially with how hard I’ve worked. It felt great to be around my family. I’m super blessed,” he said. Tennessee used pick #165 overall on Singleton. The 6’, 219-pound running back was at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading when he got the call from the Titans on Saturday. Singleton was with his family and friends for a private NFL Draft watch party.

Singleton set all-time records in Berks County with 6,326 rushing yards and 116 touchdowns. As a senior, he ran for 2,059 yards and averaged a staggering 12.7 yards per carry while scoring 44 touchdowns. The Gov. Mifflin standout was named the Gatorade National Offensive Player of the Year and Mr. PA Football for Class 4A-6A. In addition, the Maxwell Football Club presented him with its National High School Offensive Player of the Year award. Singleton helped the Mustangs win their first District 3 championship in 2020. “I’ll remember most the brotherhood, playing with my friends. They made me a better person,” he replied.

Singleton burst on the scene in State College in 2022. He rumbled for 1,061 yards and averaged 6.8 ypc. His twelve rushing touchdowns established a new record by a freshman at Penn State. Singleton piled up nearly 1,100 yards on the ground as a junior and reached the end zone a dozen times. He added 41 receptions and five more scores through the air. Singleton joined Saquon Barkley, Evan Royster, Curtis Enis, Blair Thomas, and John Cappelletti as the only Nittany Lions with multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

As a senior, Singleton was limited to 549 yards on 123 carries. He had 13 touchdowns last fall. Singleton ranks first all-time at Penn State in rushing touchdowns (45) and career touchdowns (55). His 5,586 all-purpose yards are also the most in program history. He finished fifth in career rushing yards at Penn State with 3,461.

Singleton suffered a broken foot during a practice prior to the Senior Bowl in late January. He did attend the NFL Combine, but was unable to participate in drills. He joins a Tennessee backfield that includes Tony Pollard. He led the Titans with 1,082 rushing yards last season. Pollard, who averaged 4.5 yards per carry, turns 29 on Thursday. “They’re a great organization, really good coaching staff. I’ve been following them for a long time. I just can’t wait to get there and get to work with them,” said Singleton.

Jake Franek-Exeter https://berkssportsreport.com/jake-franek-exeter/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 17:20:38 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5537 There’s no clock in high school baseball. The game doesn’t end until all seven innings have been played. Exeter made the most of its 21 outs on Wednesday afternoon in Reiffton. The Eagles scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to stun Gov. Mifflin 4-3. Jake Franek delivered a walkoff RBI single up the middle. “I knew it was through right off the bat. I thank my teammates for putting me in that good position,” said the senior shortstop. Franek’s teammates rushed out of the dugout and threw water on him. “Our team loves to battle…We were all hype. It was fun,” replied Franek.

Exeter wasn’t having much fun through the first six innings. RJ Weaver held the (11-4, 7-3) Eagles to two hits through six frames. The Juniata commit racked up ten strikeouts with no walks over 6.2 innings. Matt Woram opened the bottom of the seventh with a single. Weaver got a fly out and a strikeout to move within one out of a complete game victory. Mason Goodhart, the opposing pitcher, hit a RBI single to right field to get Exeter on the scoreboard. Xavier Jacobs followed with a fly ball to left-center that should have been caught, however, center fielder Ryan Lehman struggled to see the ball in the sun. Left fielder Cam Zurawski drifted into the gap, but wasn’t able to make the catch. The ball dropped right next to Zurawski and Jacobs’ double made it 3-2. Justin Freese, who’s in his 31st season as head coach, decided to send freshman Brayden Downes to the plate. Downes only had four at-bats in the Eagles’ first 14 games. His RBI single to right tied it at 3-3. “It was beautiful. He always steps up when he gets the opportunity,” noted Franek. Downes is 3-for-5 this year. Owen Miller took over for Weaver on the mound. He got the dangerous Jake Hafer to hit a grounder to shortstop, but the ball rolled under Aden Reiter’s glove for an error. That brought up Franek who provided his first walkoff hit since his freshman season. Franek, who also plays football, is batting .354 this spring with 15 runs.

Hafer, an East Stroudsburg commit, went 2-for-4. He leads the team with a lofty .519 batting average. Goodhart entered the day with a 6.74 ERA. The senior righty went the distance and limited the (7-9, 4-5) Mustangs to three runs, one earned, on six hits. Goodhart finished with five strikeouts and one walk. “Mason did very well. He kept throwing strikes,” said Franek. Nick Montgomery, a senior catcher, was 2-for-3 for Gov. Mifflin.

Both teams were scoreless after four innings. Third baseman Brenton Feathers committed an error on Lehman’s bunt to begin the fifth inning. Zurawski, a left-handed hitter who’s headed to Lebanon Valley College, followed with a two-run homer to the opposite field. Reiter ripped a two-out double to right-center. He scored on Montgomery’s single through the left side for a 3-0 advantage. Joe Murray hammered a triple to center field in the top of the seventh. He tried to score on a wild pitch, but was thrown out at the plate.

The Mustangs have lost four of their last five games. The defending Berks County and District 3-6A champions have dropped to 17th in the District 3 power rankings. The top 14 teams will qualify for the tournament in Class 6A. Gov. Mifflin sits in fourth place in Division 1 of the BCIAA standings. Meanwhile, Exeter remains a-half game ahead of Muhlenberg for second place in Division 1. Wilson is in first place with a perfect (9-0) league record. The county playoffs begin on May 7th.

Jay Oliver-Twin Valley https://berkssportsreport.com/jay-oliver-twin-valley/ Thu, 16 Apr 2026 13:43:24 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5527 If you weren’t at Rulon Griffith Field on Wednesday night, you probably wouldn’t believe what happened. Twin Valley scored six runs on one hit in the seventh inning and stunned Gov. Mifflin 8-7 in Shillington. “I don’t know if you can put a word into that game other than a team just not giving up. We’ve seen our team this year give up in moments, but today they didn’t give up. It was gritty and I’m proud of the guys,” said first-year head coach Jay Oliver. The (6-6, 3-4) Mustangs had won three of their previous four games. They committed seven errors in the top of the seventh on senior night. “Mysterious things happen when you put the ball in play. That’s a cliche, but you see what happens. People get nervous, put a little pressure on. We’ve been on both sides of the coin,” noted Oliver. The (5-5, 4-2) Raiders are in first place in Division 2 of the Berks League.

The seventh frame began with a soft line drive single down the third base line by freshman Blaise Rigg. The throw into second base got away and rolled past the right fielder allowing Rigg to advance all the way to third. That was the first in a series of miscues by the defending county champions. Rigg came home on a wild pitch to make it 7-3. After Nate Lord walked, Evan Glucksnis was replaced on the mound by senior righty Owen Miller. Glucksnis allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits. The Gettysburg commit finished with five strikeouts and five walks. He entered the contest with a 1.59 ERA.

Grant Moser was the first batter to face Miller. Moser missed Twin Valley’s first nine games due to an injury. He drew a walk before Miller struck out Jayce Oliver. Luke Raines then hit a ground ball to Jesse Angstadt at second who opted to flip the ball to shortstop Aden Reiter. The late toss was dropped which loaded the bases for Nate Sedgwick. He hit a grounder to shortstop and Reiter’s throw to first base was low. Two runs scored and suddenly the Raiders were within 7-5 with one out. Tyler Rhode followed with a ground ball to shortstop. This one went under Reiter’s glove for another error. The throw came home and catcher Nick Montgomery tried to get a runner at third base. However, his throw sailed into left field and a second run scored on the play. With the game even at 7-7, Brody Majeski flew out to center for the second out. Pinch-runner Cole Devine stole third base and Montgomery’s low throw went into left field, giving Twin Valley the go-ahead run.

Chase Reilly retired Gov. Mifflin in order in the bottom of the seventh. The junior right-hander was charged with two runs, both unearned, over two innings. Reilly struck out three and didn’t give up a hit. Kutztown commit Nate Lord allowed a dozen hits and five runs in five innings. The All-County selection from last season had five strikeouts and one walk. The Raiders won despite getting outhit 12-to-6. Lord and Rigg provided two hits apiece. The difference was in the field. Twin Valley committed two errors compared to eight for the Mustangs. Miller took the loss, but all four of the runs that he gave up were unearned. Angstadt and RJ Weaver each had three hits for Gov. Mifflin. Charlie Ainge went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. The Mustangs lost eight starters and five All-State picks to graduation. They were (26-2) last spring and claimed their first District 3 title.

The Raiders grabbed a 2-0 edge with a couple of runs in the first inning. A RBI single to shallow right field by Raines was followed by a wild pitch which scored Oliver. He walked three times on Wednesday. Gov. Mifflin got one run back in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI single through the right side by Ainge. A two-out RBI double to center from Ryan Lehman tied it at 2-2 in the second inning. The Mustangs tacked on three runs with four hits in the fifth. Cam Zurawski ripped a RBI double down the first base line. Joe Murray brought in another run with a groundout. A bloop single to left by Weaver gave Gov. Mifflin a 5-2 cushion. The Mustangs extended their advantage to 7-2 in the sixth. They added two runs without a hit. An error and a walk got things going. Ainge then hit a grounder to first base, but the throw home was late. Angstadt delivered a RBI groundout to second as Gov. Mifflin played small ball.

Twin Valley had gone scoreless for five straight innings before things got crazy in the seventh. The Raiders are without talented junior Nate DiRocco. He’s out for the season with a knee injury. Oliver still likes the talent on his roster. “We have not played even baseball at all this entire year due to injuries and other things, but we’ve got the guys. Hopefully, this kind of propels us into next week,” he replied.

Hamburg doubled up Schuylkill Valley 4-2 on “Hawk Hill.” Isaak Stewart threw a complete game. He allowed one earned run on nine hits and a walk. Stewart helped his cause by going 3-for-4 and driving in a run.

Super Makes All-State Team https://berkssportsreport.com/super-makes-all-state-team/ Tue, 07 Apr 2026 20:52:12 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5507 Bella Super was voted to the Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State team for the second consecutive year. The Gov. Mifflin junior was a third team choice in Class 6A. The 5’7 guard averaged 18.8 points per game. Super showed her range by hitting 63 triples. She was the only All-State selection from Berks County.

The three-year starter reached 1,000 career points on January 6th at Reading. Super erupted for 31 points as the Mustangs defeated the Red Knights 59-55 at the Geigle Complex. She will enter her senior season with 1,329 points. Ashley Espinosa, a 2012 graduate, is Gov. Mifflin’s all-time leading scorer with 1,803 points.

The Mustangs finished (18-10) this year. They reached the BCIAA semifinals before falling to Exeter 46-40 at Santander Arena. Gov. Mifflin ended up in eighth place in the District 3-6A tournament and qualified for the state playoffs. “Roberts Rankings”-Baseball https://berkssportsreport.com/roberts-rankings-baseball-9/ Mon, 06 Apr 2026 21:30:16 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5505 Gov. Mifflin’s baseball team has been a juggernaut over the past two seasons. The Mustangs racked up 50 wins, along with state, district, and county championships. This season is still in its early stages, but there doesn’t appear to be a dominant force in the Berks League in 2026. More teams could fall into the good as opposed to great category. Pitching depth and defense will be key factors as the season progresses. At the high school level, many games are determined by walks and errors. Limiting mistakes and doing the little things well will keep you in most ball games.

Wilson is unbeaten in its three league contests. The Bulldogs have a very demanding non-league schedule. They lost to last year’s PIAA-6A runner-up North Penn and Owen J. Roberts by one run. West Chester commit Ben Kulp (3-1, 2.41) has 35 strikeouts and just five walks over 20.1 innings. The 6’2, 215-pound senior is also hitting .500 with a team-high 12 RBI.

Exeter is riding a three-game winning streak since falling to Wilson 14-5. Matt Woram is off to an unbelievable start. The junior has four home runs in only 15 at-bats! Woram is batting .400 and leads the Eagles with ten walks.

The rest of Division 1 is jammed up like Route 422 East near the Lancaster Avenue exit. Muhlenberg has a 4-2 victory over Gov. Mifflin on its resume, however, the Muhls lost to an improved Reading squad 7-4. Muhlenberg has a big week ahead with Exeter and Wilson making the trip to Laureldale on Wednesday and Friday respectively. Meanwhile, the Mustangs are trying to get back on track after losing to Wilson and Exeter by a combined score of 19-1 last week.

Division 2 leader Fleetwood has won three in a row. The Tigers squeezed past Daniel Boone 1-0 and Schuylkill Valley 12-11. Fleetwood has a tough test at home versus Exeter tomorrow.

Twin Valley is trying to overcome injuries to Nate DiRocco and Grant Moser. That’s not an easy task for the Raiders. Daniel Boone’s (2-6) record is deceiving. The Blazers have dropped three games by one run. On Saturday, they came up short to Boyertown 15-13 in twelve innings. Daniel Boone needs to improve its .213 team batting average.

Wyomissing sits atop Division 3. The Spartans have prevailed in all three of their league games. Ryan Graham, Teddy White, and Austin Lecher are each hitting .500 or higher. Hamburg, Berks Catholic, and Schuylkill Valley are lurking behind the Spartans. We will learn more about this division on Wednesday with a pair of rivalry matchups. Wyomissing visits Berks Catholic and Hamburg battles Schuylkill Valley on “Hawk Hill.”

Oley Valley is the hottest team in Berks County right now with five consecutive victories. The Lynx are (3-0) in league action and in first place in Division 4. Tim Fries (3-0, 0.76) has 29 strikeouts and just four walks over 18.1 innings. The senior is also batting .520 with a team-high 11 RBI and seven extra-base hits. Oley Valley defeated Kutztown 4-1 last Wednesday. The Cougars are stuck in a three-game losing skid.

It’s always tricky to compare teams this early in the campaign, especially considering the differences in strength of schedule. Remember that no matter where your favorite team is ranked, the sun will come out tomorrow! Without further ado, here are the “Roberts Rankings” for the Berks Baseball League.

“The Great 8”

1.Wilson (4-3)

2.Exeter (5-2)

3.Oley Valley (6-2)

4.Muhlenberg (2-3)

5.Gov. Mifflin (4-4)

6.Fleetwood (4-2)

7.Wyomissing (3-2)

8.Hamburg (5-3)

Jack Gabel-Wilson https://berkssportsreport.com/jack-gabel-wilson-2/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 12:23:15 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5502 Wilson has a nice one-two punch at the top of its rotation. Ben Kulp and Jack Gabel are both committed to West Chester. Kulp has a 1.95 ERA and 25 strikeouts over 14.1 innings this season. The 6’2, 215-pound senior has only allowed seven hits and three walks. Gabel took his turn on Wednesday afternoon and shut down rival Gov. Mifflin. The senior righty limited the Mustangs to two hits in 6.2 innings before reaching the 100 pitch limit. The Bulldogs scored six runs in the sixth of a 8-1 victory. Gabel racked up nine strikeouts while handing out just one walk. “He’s always in the zone. He has a really good knack of throwing his fastball either side of the plate and he throws his curveball for a strike. When you can do that in high school, throw two pitches for a strike, you’re gonna be pretty effective,” said head coach Bill Underwood. Gabel lowered his ERA to 1.45 with 14 strikeouts in 9.2 innings. Underwood added, “He’s got good velocity. He’s a bulldog on the mound.”

Gov. Mifflin went (50-7) over the previous two years with a state championship in 2024 and a District 3 title a season ago. However, the Mustangs lost eight starters to graduation including five All-State selections. Two of Wilson’s first three batters reached via errors. After Evan Glucksnis hit Kulp, Tim Lengle ripped a single down the first base line. RJ Weaver, a Juniata commit, made a diving attempt, but the ball bounced off his glove and two runs came home. Lengle went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI. “He’s been swinging it great all year. He’s just been hitting it right at people which happens. He’s got it in him and we know he’s gonna get hot,” noted Gabel.

Gov. Mifflin’s first hit didn’t come until the top of the fourth. It was a single to center by shortstop Aden Reiter. The (3-3) Bulldogs threatened in the bottom of the frame. Gabe Spohn and Matt Mallis drew back-to-back walks. Wilson had runners on second and third with nobody out, but Glucksnis got out of the jam. Ryan Marmolejos lined out sharply to left field with the bases loaded to end the threat. Glucksnis, who’s headed to Gettysburg College, kept the (3-4) Mustangs in the game. The 6’2, 200-pound righty gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out six and walked six. Cam Zurawski got them on the scoreboard in the fifth. The Lebanon Valley commit provided an opposite field RBI single to left with two outs.

Spohn, who’s hitting .444 this year, worked another walk to begin the bottom of the sixth. Glucksnis had to come out after throwing 104 pitches. Charlie Ainge, who’s going to Penn State Altoona, took over on the mound with one out and a runner on second base. Following Gov. Mifflin’s third error, sophomore Logan Pettit delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to center. A bloop single to right by Gabel brought in two more runs to make it 5-1. The shortstop went 2-for-3 with a walk to increase his batting average to .381. Ainge wasn’t able to record an out. Owen Miller came out of the bullpen and walked Kulp with the bases loaded. Kulp has a team-high .500 average and 11 RBI through six games. Lengle gave the Bulldogs a 8-1 cushion with a two-run single to center. Wilson is hitting .337 as a team and averaging nine runs per game. “Going into the season, we thought pitching was gonna be our strong suit and hitting was gonna have to come around. Coming out of the gate, we’ve been putting up like 10-15 hits a game and putting runs up,” said Gabel.

Ainge was charged with five runs, four earned, on three hits and a walk. The Bulldogs ended up with six hits and eight walks. They didn’t make any errors. Kulp retired the final batter with a strikeout. The Mustangs earned their 16th BCIAA championship last year. There seems to be a lot more parity in Berks County this season. “Everybody can compete with everybody this year, but I think we’re the team to beat,” stated Gabel.
