It was the end of the year. We were really tired, but we had a little break and got our get back,” said Gavin Miller. The Eagles were motivated for their BCIAA quarterfinal against the Tigers at FirstEnergy Stadium. Miller threw a complete game five-hitter as Exeter defeated Fleetwood 4-1. The Shepherd University commit finished with five strikeouts and no walks. “I preach don’t let anyone get free on base. It’s very important. It doesn’t let them get the momentum,” emphasized Miller. The hard-throwing senior righty has allowed just 26 hits over 40.2 innings this season. Miller (6-0, 1.38) has piled up 50 strikeouts and only eight walks. The game was suspended on Thursday night at Owls Field due to rain. It resumed on Saturday afternoon in the top of the 2nd with one out and a man on second base. Chase Youse, who entered the day with five hits all season, ripped a RBI double to right-center. The No. 8 hitter went 2-for-2 with a walk on his birthday. Youse knocked in a pair of runs and made a nice catch in center field. The fourth-seeded Tigers stranded a runner on third in the 3rd when Brayden Sobjak lined out sharply to right field. They put men on first and second with one out in the 4th, but Miller got a strikeout and popup to end the threat. Youse began the 5th with a walk. A popup that was dropped would lead to two unearned runs for the fifth-seeded Eagles. Brenton Feathers provided a sacrifice fly to center. Jake Franek followed with a high chopper over the third baseman’s head for a RBI single. A two-out bloop single to center by Youse made it 4-0 in the 6th. Sobjak led off the bottom half of that inning with a triple to right field. He scored Fleetwood’s lone run on an infield single by sophomore Gabe Seidel. Nick Noll took the loss despite pitching well. The senior southpaw went the distance for the (13-6) Tigers. He was charged with four runs, two earned, on nine hits. Noll struck out four and walked one. Carter Redding went 3-for-4 and raised his average to .453. “He had an amazing game…He’s been a really important piece to our team all year. He’s getting on base. He’s very fast,” noted Miller. Redding is going to East Stroudsburg for football. He also played basketball at Exeter. Sophomore catcher Brandon Weller added two hits. The (15-6) Eagles will take on top-seeded Gov. Mifflin in the nightcap at FirstEnergy Stadium on Monday. Wyomissing and Berks Catholic meet in the first Berks League semifinal at 3:30pm. Exeter went (4-8) in league play last spring and missed the postseason. “Last year, we had a very young team. This year, we grew into our own. We trust our coaches and our team chemistry has been a lot better,” stated Miller.

Gavin Moody-Muhlenberg https://berkssportsreport.com/gavin-moody-muhlenberg/ https://berkssportsreport.com/gavin-moody-muhlenberg/#comments Tue, 09 Apr 2024 09:48:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4168 The beauty of baseball is that there isn’t a time limit. Until the final out is recorded, anything can happen. Muhlenberg proved that on Monday night in Shillington with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Gov. Mifflin. Gavin Moody hit a two-run double to left-center with two outs in the top of the 7th. “I was sitting fastball the entire time, thinking I could drive it,” explained the sophomore outfielder. Kevin Rodriguez dove head-first into home plate with the go-ahead run. Ethan Weiler threw a complete game in his first varsity start. The 6’2 junior struck out Dante Casantini with runners on first and second to end it. “That was great, he shoved. They couldn’t touch him,” said Moody. Weiler gave up ten hits and four walks. He struck out five while keeping the Mustangs off-balance with changeups and curveballs. Weiler was effective without an overpowering fastball. Moody mentioned that Weiler reminds him of Dalton Follweiler, an All-County selection for the Muhls last year. Muhlenberg took a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning. Eli Keller ripped a RBI double down the third base line. The relay throw got away which allowed Keller to move up to third base. He scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Rodriguez. Gov. Mifflin responded with a pair of runs in the 6th inning. Nate Radwanski brought in courtesy runner Joe Kowalski with a sacrifice fly to center field. After an infield single by Joey Berg, Bryce Wunderlich came through with a two-out RBI double. Ethan Grim walked Keller to open the 7th frame. Rodriguez then hit a grounder to shortstop that looked like a routine double play ball, but the toss was dropped by Radwanski at second base. Grim struck out Aaden Lopez before reaching 100 pitches and being replaced by sophomore RJ Weaver. Assistant coaches from North Carolina and Pittsburgh were in attendance to see Grim. The hard-throwing junior held the Muhls to two hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. He was charged with four runs, but only one was earned. The (4-1) Mustangs committed three errors. Weaver struck out Josh Smeltzer before Moody delivered the clutch double. “The energy here was immaculate,” remarked Moody. Gov. Mifflin left nine men on base. Bryce Detwiler, Travis Jenkins, Grim, Berg, and Wunderlich each finished with two hits. Detwiler, a junior shortstop, is committed to UConn. Muhlenberg second baseman Cam Burr is headed to Kutztown University. He went 1-for-2 with a run. The (3-2) Muhls have another test on Tuesday when they visit Wilson.

Gavin Morris-Fleetwood https://berkssportsreport.com/gavin-morris-fleetwood/ Wed, 08 Sep 2021 20:16:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=1602 Gavin Morris is off and running…literally. Morris has rumbled for 252 yards in the Tigers’ first two games. He scored 4TD last week in a 38-14 victory over Annville-Cleona and he wasn’t at 100%. The 195-pound senior is averaging more than eight yards per carry. Morris is also having a big impact on defense at linebacker. You will learn that he watches a lot of film. Morris said that 6’4, 235-pound lineman Joey Svoboda helped him this offseason. I asked Morris what would happen if he and Svoboda squared off on the wrestling mat, haha. Plus, find out which teammate Morris thinks is most likely to be a comedian in the future.

Gavin Lenart-Wilson https://berkssportsreport.com/gavin-lenart-wilson-2/ Sat, 28 Aug 2021 23:18:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=1464 Wilson knocked off Central Dauphin 27-21 in its season opener. Gavin Lenart said some reporters from Harrisburg gave the Bulldogs extra motivation. The 215-pound senior made a team-high 9 tackles. Lenart also ran for 40 yards and a TD on three carries. He was proud of the job that the offensive line did vs. the Rams. Wilson finished with 284 rushing yards and averaged 6.2 yards/carry. Meanwhile, CD averaged just 3.8 yards/carry. Lenart was happy to be back playing in front of a packed house at John Gurski Stadium.

Gavin Lenart-Wilson https://berkssportsreport.com/gavin-lenart-wilson/ Wed, 25 Aug 2021 20:24:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=1353 Gavin Lenart and Jadyn Jones form a powerful 1-2 punch in the Wilson backfield. Lenart averaged 7 yards on his 33 carries last season with 4TD. He said the Bulldogs have “the best running back duo in the state.” Lenart’s dad, Joe, was a captain on Wilson’s 1990 District 3 championship team, but Gavin isn’t too impressed, haha. Gavin described the emotions of a Friday night game at John Gurski Stadium in West Lawn. He also talked about how playing lacrosse has helped him in football. Oh, he has no plans for cutting his hair!
