Each team managed a few big plays and the Lancaster squad came away with a 23-7 win over Berks/Lebanon. “Even though we didn’t come out on top, it was a great experience for all of the coaches,” said Alan Moyer of Conrad Weiser. He served as the head coach of the Berks/Lebanon team. Lancaster improved to (4-0) under the current format for the All-Star Game. Victor Ridenour from Lampeter-Strasburg was their head coach this year.

Lancaster got points on the opening drive thanks to a 24-yard field goal by Peter Fiorello from L-S. Gabe Martin then broke off a 41-yard run on fourth-and-2 in the second quarter. Garden Spot’s dual-threat quarterback took the ball down the right sideline to the 18-yard line. However, Lancaster wasn’t able to cash in on the red zone opportunity. A missed 32-yard field goal kept the score at 3-0 with 7:49 remaining in the first half.

Berks/Lebanon responded with its best series of the night. Wilson’s Mason Young, an Albright commit, lofted a perfect pass down the left sideline to Jayden Ware of Exeter for a 34-yard gain. They hooked up again to cap the drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone. Ware, who’s going to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, finished with three catches for 65 yards. “Jayden is certainly a playmaker. He has a real true competitive spirit. Kids like that never want to leave the field and coaches love guys like that,” remarked Moyer. Berks/Lebanon was in front 7-3 with 1:57 left in the second quarter.

Lancaster’s offense answered immediately. Martin rolled right and was under pressure when he lofted a pass deep down the right sideline to Kris Burgos-Wise from Solanco. The ball just made it over the hand of Reading cornerback Idris Weaver. Burgos-Wise made the grab at the 25-yard line and cut back into the middle of the field for a touchdown. Momentum shifted quickly as Lancaster went on top 10-7 with 1:38 to go in the half. Burgos-Wise, a Gettysburg commit, wasn’t done. On Lancaster’s next possession, he reeled in a 50-yard pass over the middle from Sawyer Esbenshade of Conestoga Valley. Lancaster couldn’t add to its lead because of a low snap on a 29-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

The only turnover of the contest came on the first play of the second half. Northern Lebanon quarterback Bryan Mitzel ran to his left where defensive tackle Taylor Veilleux of Manheim Township forced a fumble. His teammate with the Blue Streaks, Zach Bomberger, scooped up the ball and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. Lancaster increased its advantage to 17-7 just nine seconds into the third quarter. Berks/Lebanon tried a 45-yard field on the ensuing series, but it was well short.

Lancaster put together a drive that lasted almost six and a-half minutes. All-State running back Johnny Garcia from Solanco and Marcos Fernandez of Manheim Township split time in the backfield. Fernandez took an inside handoff and lowered his shoulder at the goal line for a 7-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked, but Lancaster seized control with that 80-yard march. Berks/Lebanon was behind 23-7 with 10:03 left on the clock. They turned the ball over on downs at Lancaster’s 40-yard line with 4:29 remaining. Cam Small, Muhlenberg’s all-time leading rusher with 3,817 yards, was bottled up for most of the game. He ended up with 58 yards on 16 carries. Will Milazzo, another standout from Manheim Township, provided a pair of sacks.

Despite the outcome, Moyer enjoyed working with the players on the Berks/Lebanon roster. “I told the kids they are certainly a special group, truly All-Stars and really a bunch of class acts,” he noted. Moyer added, “I met many parents after the game and made a point to tell them what great kids they have.”

Singleton drafted by the Titans https://berkssportsreport.com/singleton-drafted-by-the-titans/ Mon, 27 Apr 2026 02:55:38 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5544 Another high school football star from Berks County is headed to the NFL. Gov. Mifflin graduate Nick Singleton was selected in the fifth round by the Titans. “It felt amazing, especially with how hard I’ve worked. It felt great to be around my family. I’m super blessed,” he said. Tennessee used pick #165 overall on Singleton. The 6’, 219-pound running back was at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading when he got the call from the Titans on Saturday. Singleton was with his family and friends for a private NFL Draft watch party.

Singleton set all-time records in Berks County with 6,326 rushing yards and 116 touchdowns. As a senior, he ran for 2,059 yards and averaged a staggering 12.7 yards per carry while scoring 44 touchdowns. The Gov. Mifflin standout was named the Gatorade National Offensive Player of the Year and Mr. PA Football for Class 4A-6A. In addition, the Maxwell Football Club presented him with its National High School Offensive Player of the Year award. Singleton helped the Mustangs win their first District 3 championship in 2020. “I’ll remember most the brotherhood, playing with my friends. They made me a better person,” he replied.

Singleton burst on the scene in State College in 2022. He rumbled for 1,061 yards and averaged 6.8 ypc. His twelve rushing touchdowns established a new record by a freshman at Penn State. Singleton piled up nearly 1,100 yards on the ground as a junior and reached the end zone a dozen times. He added 41 receptions and five more scores through the air. Singleton joined Saquon Barkley, Evan Royster, Curtis Enis, Blair Thomas, and John Cappelletti as the only Nittany Lions with multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

As a senior, Singleton was limited to 549 yards on 123 carries. He had 13 touchdowns last fall. Singleton ranks first all-time at Penn State in rushing touchdowns (45) and career touchdowns (55). His 5,586 all-purpose yards are also the most in program history. He finished fifth in career rushing yards at Penn State with 3,461.

Singleton suffered a broken foot during a practice prior to the Senior Bowl in late January. He did attend the NFL Combine, but was unable to participate in drills. He joins a Tennessee backfield that includes Tony Pollard. He led the Titans with 1,082 rushing yards last season. Pollard, who averaged 4.5 yards per carry, turns 29 on Thursday. “They’re a great organization, really good coaching staff. I’ve been following them for a long time. I just can’t wait to get there and get to work with them,” said Singleton.

BCFCA 2026 Hall of Fame Class https://berkssportsreport.com/bcfca-2026-hall-of-fame-class/ Tue, 24 Mar 2026 16:49:43 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5486 Pete Gilmore, Nate Romig, Charles “Gooch” Adams, Dave Bodolus, Chuck Brice, and Randy Yocum were selected to the Berks County Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. They will be inducted on Saturday, June 6th at the Green Valley Chateau. I’m honored to once again serve as the emcee of this special event. This is the 23rd class of the BCFCA Hall of Fame. There are more than 150 members including players, coaches, special contributors, and officials. Former players must be at least 35 years old to be considered for the Hall of Fame.

Gilmore was named the Berks County Player of the Year in 1999 when he ran for 1,810 yards and scored a school-record 33 touchdowns at Wilson. The Big 33 Classic pick ended his career with 3,506 rushing yards and 61 TD.

Romig was the first player in Berks County history to run for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. After piling up 4,492 yards and 69 touchdowns at Daniel Boone, Romig went on to have a Hall of Fame career at Albright.

Adams was well known as a big hitter and physical force in Wilson’s secondary. He was voted the Section 1 Defensive Back of the Year in the Lancaster-Lebanon League in 1993. Adams went on to play at UConn.

Bodolus completely turned around the football program at Daniel Boone from 2003-2011. He led the Blazers to 79 wins and seven trips to the District 3 playoffs. They won or shared three section championships in the I-C League.

Brice was an All-County offensive tackle and linebacker at Holy Name. He helped the Blue Jays win I-C League titles in 1979 and 1980. Brice became a standout player at Delaware.

Yocum was a three-year starter and All-State linebacker at Schuylkill Valley. He was a longtime youth football coach at Exeter. Yocum also served Berks County as a physical therapist and strength and conditioning coach.

Steve Pangburn is staying in the Lancaster-Lebanon Football League, but he’s changing teams. Pangburn resigned as the Tigers’ head coach after four years. He will become the Blazers’ new head coach, pending school board approval, on February 23.

Fleetwood went (13-28) over the past four seasons with Pangburn at the helm. The Tigers beat Shamokin 42-41 in overtime for the Eastern Conference Class 4A Championship in 2023. They finished (3-7) the following year. In 2025, Fleetwood won just two games. The Tigers have gone (0-12) in Section 3 of the L-L League in the last two seasons.

J.D. Okuniewski stepped down at Daniel Boone in November. He was the head coach in Birdsboro for three years. The Blazers finished (1-9, 1-6) this past fall. They were outscored 463-to-110. Pangburn is shifting from Section 3 to Section 4 of the L-L League.

Justice Hardy transfers to Wilson https://berkssportsreport.com/justice-hardy-transfers-to-wilson/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 20:55:58 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5305 Justice Hardy has been making highlight-reel plays at Wyomissing for the past three seasons. The standout RB/DB is taking his talents from Bob Wolfrum Field to John Gurski Stadium. Hardy confirmed to Paul Roberts that he enrolled at Wilson this week. He expects to start taking classes there in a few days.

It didn’t take long to see why Hardy was so highly touted entering high school. He averaged 8.6 yards per carry and scored twelve touchdowns as a freshman. His presence was felt on defense as well with four interceptions. As a sophomore, Hardy was selected to the All-State team in Class 4A.

The 5’10, 190-pound junior ran for a team-high 979 yards and 15 TD this fall. He averaged a staggering 10.8 yards per carry. Hardy also led the Spartans with 12 catches for 127 yards and four scores. He was recently named the Defensive Back of the Year in Section 4 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Hardy made 40 tackles and three interceptions while forcing four fumbles this season.

Wyomissing reached the District 3-4A semifinals before dropping a nailbiter at top-seeded Susquehanna Township 37-35. Hardy ran for 156 yards and 2 TD on 17 carries in that game. He added a touchdown reception as the Spartans finished (10-2).

Hardy holds Division I offers from Temple, Liberty, Rice, and Kent State. He’s going from one outstanding program to another. Wyomissing has gone (81-11) over the past seven years. The Spartans captured a state championship in 2012 to go along with twelve District 3 titles. Meanwhile, Wilson currently owns the state record with 50 consecutive winning seasons. The Bulldogs have compiled 620 all-time victories.

Season ends in State Final for Twin Valley https://berkssportsreport.com/season-ends-in-state-final-for-twin-valley/ Fri, 05 Dec 2025 15:16:40 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5285 The best season in three decades of football at Twin Valley came to an end in the PIAA-4A Championship on Thursday night. It took an incredible performance by Sean Steckert and Southern Lehigh to hand the Raiders their first loss. The Spartans pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 43-21 victory at Cumberland Valley. Both teams made their first appearance in the state finals. Steckert stole the show with 37 carries for 301 yards and 4 TD. “He’s got good balance. He’s a wrestler, you could tell that. His core strength is probably insane, the way he keeps his balance and moves. He plays hard,” said Twin Valley head coach Brett Myers. The 5’9, 175-pound senior ended 2025 with a staggering 3,212 rushing yards and 45 TD on 386 carries. The (14-1) Raiders entered the contest allowing just 11 points per game. Southern Lehigh piled up 446 total yards and 23 first downs. The (15-1) Spartans held the ball for nearly 29 minutes. “We didn’t play our best game, but give those guys a lot of credit. They had something to do with that,” replied Myers.

Twin Valley got off to a fast start. Drew Engle ripped off a 39-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. Lucas Myers, Brett’s son, went untouched up the middle for a 20-yard touchdown just two minutes into the game. Southern Lehigh responded quickly with an 80-yard drive that took less than three minutes. Steckert followed up his 46-yard run with an 11-yard score to make it 7-7. The Raiders’ 21-yard field goal attempt on the ensuing possession was no good after a low snap bounced back to the holder. Freshman Declan Walsh converted the first field goal of the Spartans’ season for a 10-7 edge. The 24-yard kick came with 3:17 left in the second quarter. Sophomore Maverik Foster then hit Dominic Summers over the top of Southern Lehigh’s defense for a 64-yard touchdown pass. Once again, the Spartans had an answer. On fourth-and-1 with 25 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Steckert bounced outside and raced 27 yards down the left sideline for a score. The District 11 champs were in front 17-14 at halftime.

On the first series of the second half, Colton Sams found Otto Young down the left seam for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Sophomore Adam Fritts then picked off Foster, setting up Southern Lehigh at Twin Valley’s 31-yard line. A 6-yard run by Steckert put the Spartans on top 30-14 midway through the third quarter. Engle capped a 65-yard drive by the Raiders with a 4-yard touchdown run. Twin Valley opted not to try a 2-point conversion and trailed 30-21 with 2:44 to go in the third period.

One of the pivotal plays of the night came early in the fourth quarter with Southern Lehigh facing a fourth-and-6 at the Raiders’ 43-yard line. Sams had plenty of time to throw and connected with Luke Kawczenski over the middle for a 12-yard gain to move the chains. Sams, the son of head coach Phil Sams, fired a slant to Young moments later for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Although the 2-point conversion was stuffed, Southern Lehigh had extended its advantage to 36-21 with 10:21 to play. Twin Valley decided to punt on fourth-and-11 near midfield with eight minutes left. The Spartans marched down the field, but Ben Grundy turned them away with an interception in the end zone with 4:45 remaining. Fritts, however, came up with his second pick on the very next play. Steckert polished off a short 13-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 2:06 on the clock. On the ensuing series, sophomore safety Jack Pavis made his team-high fifth interception.

After going 4-of-4 for 90 yards in the first half, Foster was 0-for-6 in the second half with 3 INT. He had not thrown a pick in the Raiders’ first 14 games. Engle ran 22 times for 175 yards. The Army Lacrosse commit finished with 2,095 rushing yards this season and 4,211 in his career. Those totals are both school records. He also holds the program record with 61 career touchdowns. “Drew is special. The way he competed tonight is special. He’s a great kid and he’s a leader,” noted Myers. Twin Valley had 325 total yards including 235 on the ground. Lucas Myers, a 215-pound junior, provided 52 yards on 11 carries.

Sams went 13-of-18 for 145 yards. The 5’11, 169-pound junior already owns the all-time records for passing yards and touchdown passes at Southern Lehigh. Sams threw for 2,688 yards and 36 TD this year. He and Steckert were All-State selections a season ago in Class 4A. Young had three catches for 79 yards and two scores against the Raiders. Kawczenski chipped in with six receptions for 48 yards. The Spartans’ offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage. That group includes 6’4, 336-pound senior Carter Giberson who’s committed to Albany.

When the pain of this loss subsides, Twin Valley will look back at a lot of special memories. The Raiders established a school record with 14 wins. They knocked off Wyomissing and Lampeter-Strasburg in back-to-back weeks to claim the Section 4 title in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. They defeated top-seeded Susquehanna Township 41-21 for their first District 3 crown. Twin Valley held off five-time state champion Aliquippa 28-24 in the PIAA-4A semifinals. The Raiders averaged 48.7 ppg. during the historic 2025 campaign. “Twin Valley is a special place, special families. It’s a special school. If I was a young person looking for a place to raise my kids, I’d be moving to Twin Valley because it’s a great place,” said Myers.
