Fleetwood – Berks Sports Report https://berkssportsreport.com Paul Roberts Thu, 05 Feb 2026 18:51:37 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 Pangburn going from Fleetwood to Daniel Boone https://berkssportsreport.com/pangburn-going-from-fleetwood-to-daniel-boone/ Thu, 05 Feb 2026 18:51:37 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5403 Daniel Boone has found its next head football coach, while Fleetwood is beginning a search for one. Steve Pangburn is staying in the Lancaster-Lebanon Football League, but he’s changing teams. Pangburn resigned as the Tigers’ head coach after four years. He will become the Blazers’ new head coach, pending school board approval, on February 23.

Fleetwood went (13-28) over the past four seasons with Pangburn at the helm. The Tigers beat Shamokin 42-41 in overtime for the Eastern Conference Class 4A Championship in 2023. They finished (3-7) the following year. In 2025, Fleetwood won just two games. The Tigers have gone (0-12) in Section 3 of the L-L League in the last two seasons.

J.D. Okuniewski stepped down at Daniel Boone in November. He was the head coach in Birdsboro for three years. The Blazers finished (1-9, 1-6) this past fall. They were outscored 463-to-110. Pangburn is shifting from Section 3 to Section 4 of the L-L League.

Mason Senna-Fleetwood https://berkssportsreport.com/mason-senna-fleetwood/ Wed, 04 Feb 2026 13:44:51 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5400 Overwhelming was the word Mason Senna used to describe his Senior Night experience. The 6’2 guard had tears of joy in his eyes after a thrilling 47-46 victory over Wyomissing. Senna, the lone senior in the Tigers’ starting lineup, sank a go-ahead free throw with 1.8 seconds left. “I was a little nervous, I won’t lie. I was feeling the nerves,” he acknowledged. Fleetwood trailed by eleven points in the third quarter of their final regular season game. The (12-10, 6-5) Tigers were down 46-39 with less than three minutes remaining. “We started to feel a sense of urgency. It just came from a place of wanting to win really badly,” explained Senna. Fleetwood is on the bubble of the District 3-5A playoff picture. The Tigers needed to beat the Spartans to keep their hopes of continuing their season alive. Senna knocked down three 3-pointers in the opening quarter and finished with a game-high 24 points. He was averaging 24.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.4 steals entering Tuesday’s contest. “I’ve coached a long time. He is probably the best athlete that I’ve ever coached. Not basketball player per se, but just an athlete,” emphasized head coach Jason Bieber. Senna is also an all-division soccer player.

The first four shots made by Fleetwood were all from beyond the arc. However, Wyomissing was on top 15-14 after the first quarter. Daniel Moyer, a 6’ senior forward, scored seven points in the first eight minutes. The (13-7, 8-3) Spartans went on an 8-0 run to begin the second period. Sophomore Brady Eisenhower, the quarterback of the football team, hit a pair of triples. Senna provided seven points in that quarter and the Tigers pulled within 29-27 at halftime. Wyomissing kicked off the second half with an 11-2 run, including a three-point play by Dom Arguelles. The 6’ senior point guard ended up with a team-high 20 points. Eisenhower chipped in with 13 points and Moyer added eight. The Spartans were in front 42-33 going into the fourth quarter.

Eisenhower and Arguelles converted layups to give the Spartans a 46-39 edge. A three-point play by Senna made it 46-42 with 2:48 left. Senna missed two foul shots with 2:20 to go, but he followed up his second attempt with a bucket. CJ Sallee then hit Eli Herndon with a bounce pass for a layup with 1:29 on the clock. A 7-0 run by Fleetwood in 80 seconds had tied it up at 46-46. Wyomissing opted to hold for the final shot. The Spartans committed a turnover with six seconds remaining which gave the ball back to the Tigers. Bieber ran a play called “53.” Senna inbounded it along his own baseline. He threw a short pass to Bryce Ryan and then ran deep like a wide receiver. Ryan lofted a long pass over the defense to Senna who was fouled as he was going to the basket. “That’s exactly the way we drew it up. It worked like a dream. I saw it coming before it happened and Bryce threw me a great pass,” noted Senna. He hit nothing but net on his first free throw with two seconds to play. Senna missed his second attempt, but the comeback was complete.

Fleetwood scored the final eight points and outscored Wyomissing 14-to-4 in the fourth quarter. “We definitely wanted to shut down their drives. That’s where they generate a lot of their points from,” replied Senna. The Spartans went 10-of-14 from the foul line and made four 3-pointers, all in the first half. Their seven-game winning streak came to a halt. Wyomissing and Schuylkill Valley are atop the Division 3 standings with (8-3) league records. The Spartans earn the division title by virtue of winning both meetings with the Panthers in the regular season. Wyomissing and Schuylkill Valley are headed to the BCIAA playoffs which begin on Monday with the quarterfinals. The Berks County girls basketball tournament starts this Saturday.

The Tigers finished 11-for-16 from the stripe. They connected six times from beyond the arc. Herndon had seven points, including five in the pivotal fourth quarter. Sallee and sophomore Josh Szilli helped the cause with six points apiece. Fleetwood swept Wyomissing this season. The Tigers took the first matchup 40-38 one month ago. Senna also led the way in that nailbiter with 19 points. “He’s such a great role model. He’s not a kid that’s arrogant. He wants everybody to do well. He wants to help everybody to be the best they can be including myself,” remarked Bieber. Fleetwood has improved dramatically from a (5-17) mark last year. The Tigers now wait to see if they get in the District 3-5A tournament. The top 16 teams qualify and Fleetwood is #18. Palmyra, Red Land, and Lampeter-Strasburg are currently ahead of the Tigers, but those schools still have games to play. If Tuesday was the final time that Senna puts on the Fleetwood uniform, he hopes that he made a positive impression. “I try to instill in them my work ethic. You can be as good as you want to be, you just have to work for it. I hope that I can really pass down that work ethic to them,” he said.

Evan Fisher-Oley Valley https://berkssportsreport.com/evan-fisher-oley-valley/ Fri, 09 Jan 2026 14:04:50 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5343 Evan Fisher couldn’t buy a bucket in his previous two games. In fact, he was 0-for-12 in Oley Valley’s losses to Lancaster Catholic and Brandywine Heights. On Thursday, the 5’8 senior guard couldn’t miss. Fisher drilled five 3-pointers in the first half as the Lynx rolled over Fleetwood 66-47. “He works so hard. He’s had a lot of stuff to deal with off the court. This is why I coach, for kids like that, to see them have moments in big spots. That’s something he’s gonna remember for years,” said head coach Chad Walters. Fisher hit back-to-back triples in the first quarter to put the Tigers in a 17-5 hole. “I don’t think they really respected my game. They sagged off me. I’m so glad I could contribute to my team in a way that I haven’t been able to in the past couple games,” replied Fisher.

Oley Valley was on top 21-11 after the opening quarter. Fisher’s third trey made it 24-11 with 5:40 remaining in the first half. His fifth and final 3-pointer came with 3:30 left in the second period and gave the Lynx a 32-19 cushion. “We need him to score. When he doesn’t produce, it puts a lot of burden on our top two scorers. I’m proud of that kid, proud of them all,” noted Walters. Fisher has connected a team-high 23 times from beyond the arc. He sank seven shots from long range against Tulpehocken on December 19th.

Oley Valley was almost flawless in the first half. The Lynx splashed six treys, went 6-for-6 from the foul line, and only committed one turnover. Fleetwood, which had won five of its previous six contests, trailed 38-21 at halftime. The (7-6, 3-2) Tigers didn’t look comfortable against Oley Valley’s intense man-to-man defense. Fleetwood had 19 turnovers, including eight in the second quarter. A three-point play by Luke Turchi gave the Lynx a 45-25 edge midway through the third period. Gryffin Cappellano added a three-point play of his own with 2:30 to go in the third quarter. Cappellano, who opted not to play basketball a season ago, is committed to Lackawanna College for baseball. Oley Valley had a 54-37 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Turchi and Nick DeBalko finished with 21 points apiece. They both came into the night averaging nearly 16 ppg. “They’re great players. They always get downhill well. Nick is a three level scorer. They pass the ball really well too. They can do everything on the offensive end,” explained Fisher. DeBalko was limited to one game last year due to a broken foot. The 5’10 guard also plays soccer and baseball. Turchi, a 5’10 lefty, provided 13 points in the second half for the (7-5, 4-2) Lynx. They ended up 8-for-8 from the charity stripe, while the Tigers were 7-of-10. Mason Senna poured in 21 points, including ten in the third period. “Senna is such a great player, but he had to work for every single one of those points,” emphasized Walters. The 6’2 senior guard is averaging 25.6 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Josh Szilli contributed ten points off the bench. The 5’11 sophomore hit both of Fleetwood’s 3-pointers. CJ Sallee, a 5’7 junior, was limited to two points. Senna and Sallee were both voted to the All-Division soccer team this past fall.

The Lynx and Tigers have already won more games than the 2024-25 campaign. Oley Valley was (6-16) and Fleetwood went (5-17) last year. The Lynx have five seniors in the starting lineup. “We’ve played [together] since middle school, some even elementary school. We’re all close. We’re all family off the court,” said Fisher.

Beau Fegely-Fleetwood https://berkssportsreport.com/beau-fegely-fleetwood/ Thu, 11 Sep 2025 20:08:12 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5102 Coming up with three interceptions in a game is rare. Picking off three passes in one quarter is almost unheard of. Beau Fegely did just that in Fleetwood’s 31-24 win at Schuylkill Valley last week. “I just stuck to my coverage. The quarterback kept throwing the ball my way,” explained Fegely. The 5’8, 165-pound junior had a 48-yard pick-6. The outside linebacker/safety is being utilized on offense for the first time this season and it’s paying big dividends. Fegely has rushed for 388 yards and six touchdowns on 43 carries. He erupted for 224 yards and four scores in the season opener. The Tigers defeated Kutztown 54-34. “First of all, he’s a hard worker. He’s explosive, has good vision, and is strong; all the things you want to see in a back,” noted head coach Steve Pangburn. Fegely finished with 110 yards and a touchdown against the Panthers last Friday. Pangburn mentioned that Fegely prepared himself by getting in great shape during the offseason. Don’t be fooled by his size, Fegely can squat 400 pounds. He attends Oley Valley High School and competes for Fleetwood through a co-op agreement between the schools.

Fleetwood returned six starters on each side of the ball from a team that went (3-7, 0-6) in 2024. Chase McMonagle is back at quarterback. The 5’11, 165-pound senior has completed 51% of his passes for 441 yards and six touchdowns. McMonagle threw for nearly 1,400 yards last fall. “He knows everybody’s job on the field. Whenever you have a question, he knows,” replied Fegely. Juniors Bryce Ryan and Bryan Robledo have been the primary targets for McMonagle this year. Ryan leads the (2-1) Tigers with 13 catches for 140 yards and a touchdown. His size (6’3, 205) can create mismatches in the passing game. “He’s a very big part of our offense. Whenever we need short yardage, we look his way,” said Fegely. Robledo has added 11 receptions for 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Juniors Nate Kummerer and Chase Adams are other skill position players to keep an eye on. Colin Dragan, Shane Pekuri, Anthony Garipoli, Gabe Narvez, and Johny Ulicne comprise the offensive line. Dragan (6’2, 360) and Pekuri (6’3, 265) are at right guard and right tackle respectively.

Fleetwood travels to Robesonia on Friday. Conrad Weiser is off to a (3-0) start. The Scouts went (10-1) last season and claimed the Section 3 championship in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. “It’s definitely a big game since it’s league play now, but we just look at it like it’s our next opponent,” stated Fegely.

Jason Bieber-Fleetwood https://berkssportsreport.com/jason-bieber-fleetwood/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 20:33:55 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4312 Fleetwood’s boys basketball team is getting a makeover. The Tigers will look much different this winter. They’ll have five new starters and a new head coach. Jason Bieber takes over for Terry Sitler who retired after twelve years. Bieber is no stranger to Fleetwood. He graduated from the high school in 1994 and lives in the district. In fact, his first coaching position was as an assistant for the Tigers’ boys basketball team. Bieber spent the past two seasons as the girls basketball head coach at Brandywine Heights. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the Tulpehocken and Boyertown girls basketball teams. Bieber was with the Trojans for four years. He led the Bears for thirteen seasons. In 2017, Boyertown won the PIAA-6A championship. “It was a magical year…we had five girls that all played college basketball. It was just putting them on the court and guiding them in the right direction,” said Bieber. There will be a bunch of fresh faces in Fleetwood’s lineup this winter. Aiden Soumas, Nate Herb, Hunter Svoboda, Liam Hilburt, and Mason Musitano all graduated after a (20-6) campaign. A lot of playing time will be available in 2024-25. “You all have your opportunity now. It’s brand new, everybody gets a fresh slate,” Bieber told the returning players. He has an overall record of (264-216). Bieber prefers a structured offense. “I do like a lot of sets. We usually have about 6-7 set pieces,” he noted. Bieber is still learning the landscape in the Berks Boys Basketball Conference, but he’s optimistic. “I think we’ll fit in just fine in Berks III and IV. I think a lot of the teams are very similar there,” he replied.

Fleetwood hires Bieber https://berkssportsreport.com/fleetwood-hires-bieber/ Tue, 14 May 2024 22:15:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4236 Jason Bieber is very familiar with Fleetwood. He graduated from the high school there in 1994. Bieber’s first coaching job was with the Tigers’ boys basketball team. He was an assistant under Joey Palacz thirty years ago. On Tuesday night, Bieber was officially approved as Fleetwood’s varsity boys basketball coach.

Bieber spent the past two years as the head coach of the Brandywine Heights’ girls basketball team. The Bullets went (14-8) last season, but missed the Berks County and District 3 playoffs. He has an overall record of (264-216). Bieber spent four years coaching the girls team at Tulpehocken. He was the Boyertown girls basketball coach for 13 seasons. Bieber guided the Bears to the Class 6A state championship in 2017. Boyertown defeated North Allegheny 46-35 at the Giant Center in Hershey.

There was an opening at Fleetwood after Terry Sitler retired. He led the Tigers for a dozen years with a mark of (138-126). Fleetwood finished (22-5) two seasons ago and was the District 3-4A runner-up. That squad included Jake Karnish who ended his career as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,420 points. The Tigers were (20-6) this year. Their starting lineup featured five seniors and included 1,000-point scorer Aiden Soumas. Fleetwood wound up fourth in the District 3-4A tournament. The Tigers lost 79-52 to Scranton Prep in the first round of the state playoffs. Sitler was (264-294) overall including his twelve seasons at Brandywine Heights. Bieber said he’s excited for this new opportunity.

Mustangs tame the Tigers https://berkssportsreport.com/mustangs-tame-the-tigers/ Sun, 12 May 2024 19:09:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4230 Fleetwood erupted for ten runs against Gov. Mifflin one month ago. Bryce Detwiler made sure that didn’t happen again. The UConn commit limited the fifth-seeded Tigers to two runs over six innings in the BCIAA semifinals. The top-seeded Mustangs won 5-3 on a rainy Saturday night at Owls Field in West Lawn. “Despite the weather conditions, he was able to command his slider, curve, and changeup for most of the game. Overall, just a great performance under pressure from one of our captains,” said head coach Chris Hole. Detwiler allowed three hits and struck out five to go along with a pair of walks. “Bryce did a great job navigating a talented Fleetwood lineup. In past games, they were very aggressive fastball hitters so our approach was to implement more off-speed pitches,” explained Hole. Gov. Mifflin rallied to beat Fleetwood 11-10 on April 10th. The (13-8) Tigers got on the board in the opening frame against Detwiler. Kutztown commit Aiden Soumas knocked in a run with a single to right field. Fleetwood had two hits in the 1st, but only two more the rest of the night. Ethan Grim tied it up in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right. Grim made it 4-1 in the 2nd with a two-out, two-run single up the middle. That came after sophomore Wylie Loy hit Travis Jenkins with the bases loaded. Loy settled down nicely and lasted into the 6th before reaching 100 pitches. Sam Reimert replaced Loy with two outs and two men on base. Dante Casantini crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give the (17-3) Mustangs a 5-1 advantage. Detwiler opened the top of the 7th by hitting Reimert. Hole turned to sophomore R.J. Weaver after Detwiler had fired 100 pitches. Carson Brey doubled to left to put runners on second and third. Cane Cromer’s grounder to second got the Tigers within 5-2. An error at first base by Casantini made it 5-3. Hole brought in hard-throwing junior Ethan Grim for the save. Grim promptly struck out leadoff hitter Liam Hilburt and Nick Noll to end it. Loy took the loss, but only one of the five runs that he gave up was earned. He finished with six strikeouts and five walks over 5.2 innings. Gov. Mifflin managed just four hits. Detwiler was walked three times. Nate Seidel had two singles for Fleetwood. The Mustangs advanced to the Berks County championship on Monday at 6:05pm. They’ll take on third-seeded Wilson at FirstEnergy Stadium. Gov. Mifflin has won two of the last three county titles and fifteen overall.

Liam Hilburt-Fleetwood https://berkssportsreport.com/liam-hilburt-fleetwood/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 09:22:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=3963 Every time it looked like Fleetwood was pulling away, Schuylkill Valley responded. Liam Hilburt finally delivered the knockout punch with 3:43 remaining as the Tigers beat the Panthers 51-38 in Fleetwood. Hilburt drilled a three-pointer in front of the student section in the right corner. “It felt amazing. The crowd went wild,” he said. That triple put the Tigers in front 41-32. “Once I hit that, they went crazy and I knew we were gonna win,” replied Hilburt. The 6’ senior guard finished with a dozen points. He connected three times from beyond the arc. Hilburt, an all-division baseball player, has a team-high eight treys this season. Nate Herb, an all-county soccer player, led the (6-0) Tigers with 15 points. Aiden Soumas, a Kutztown University baseball commit, added 13 points. Fleetwood was up 10-4 after the first quarter. Dom Giuffre splashed a three-pointer and then converted a breakaway layup before the buzzer to get Schuylkill Valley within 23-17 at halftime. The Panthers’ star running back had a team-high ten points. The Tigers built a 30-19 advantage in the third quarter. However, Schuylkill Valley opened the final period with a 5-0 run to make it 34-32. Cooper Hohenadel’s three-point play was followed by a technical foul on Fleetwood. Hohenadel hit both free throws. All eight of his points came in the last eight minutes. The 5’11 junior guard missed the first four games with an injury. Hohenadel averaged 12 points per game a season ago and provided a team-high 48 treys. After that rare five-point possession, the (5-2) Panthers went cold. Jake Zimmerman was limited to two points by the Tigers’ 2-3 zone. The 6’1 senior forward entered the night averaging 14. “Once he drove, we all collapsed on him. I think that shut him down,” explained Hilburt. Terry Sitler picked up his 250th career victory. This is his 12th season with the Tigers after spending twelve years at Brandywine Heights. It could have come with less stress, if Fleetwood was better from the charity stripe. The Tigers went 10-for-23 from the foul line. They’re shooting just 46% as a team. “We work on it a lot at practice. We’ll get there,” remarked Hilburt. He’s providing 7 ppg., up from 3 ppg. last season when Fleetwood was (22-5) and reached the District 3-4A championship game. Jake Karnish was in attendance on Tuesday night. The program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,420 points is playing at King’s College. He averaged 22 points last year for the Tigers. Although Karnish has moved on, expectations remain high in Fleetwood. “We’re hoping for the same thing, just win that District title this time,” said Hilburt.
