All of Twin Valley’s offensive weapons were on display in a 42-16 victory at Berks Catholic. The Raiders, who are coming off a 10-win season, piled up 512 total yards. Twin Valley came out with an uptempo attack. “It’s great to see some teams panting and gasping for air,” said Myers. The four-year starter was 9-of-14 for 236 yards and two touchdowns. He added 112 yards and another score on the ground on just five carries. “We’re only as good as our linemen will be and they had a good day. They’ve proven that their hard work has been paying off,” replied Myers. The front five for the Raiders average 278 pounds. Left tackle Aris Drake (6’5, 295) is committed to Navy. Carter Faubel, a 270-pound transfer from Delaware Valley, is a physical presence at left guard and defensive tackle. Center Noah DiGiacomo (5’11, 235) and right guard Greyson Miller (6’1, 255) both started as sophomores a season ago. Junior Zach Troutman (6’2, 335) has stepped in at right tackle. Myers raced untouched down the right sideline for a 45-yard TD midway through the opening quarter. He then rolled left and went deep to Knight for a 44-yard TD pass with 33 seconds remaining in the first period. Berks Catholic punter Devyn Sutton fumbled a snap early in the second quarter which was returned seven yards for a score by Ryan Rementer. After a 29-yard field goal by Tyler Osorio got the Saints on the board, sophomore Lucas Myers capped a 72-yard drive with a 2-yard run that came 28 seconds before halftime. Drew Engle bounced a handoff down the right sideline for a 42-yard TD three minutes into the second half. Engle, who had 77 yards on seven carries, made it 35-3. After Lucas Myers recovered a Berks Catholic fumble, Evan Myers lofted a 47-yard TD pass to Ben Grundy with 7:32 to go in the third quarter. That score put the mercy rule into effect. Grundy, a 6’1 junior, had four receptions for 91 yards. Evan Johnson chipped in with ten carries for 82 yards. The Saints scored twice in the final six minutes. Zach Suski tossed a 3-yard TD pass to junior fullback Nate Rose. Three minutes later, Faith Zudie blocked a Twin Valley punt and recovered it in the end zone. Berks Catholic ended up with 195 total yards in Dave Stahler’s debut as head coach. Rose finished with 55 yards on a dozen carries. Suski went 12-of-16 for 138 yards. The Saints lost Bryce Gumby and Gavin Welker to injuries in the first half. Meanwhile, Evan Myers got his senior campaign off to a terrific start. “High school football is a great atmosphere…While I’m enjoying my senior year already, it’s sad that we only have nine guaranteed games left,” he said.

Evan Rittle-Conrad Weiser https://berkssportsreport.com/evan-rittle-conrad-weiser/ Thu, 08 Aug 2024 17:23:22 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4344 The Conrad Weiser football team is hoping that a change in scenery will be good. The Scouts are moving up to Section 3 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. “We were in a tough section to begin with. We’re gonna see some new faces now. We struggled the past few years,” said Evan Rittle. The 5’9, 165-pound rising senior was the Wide Receiver of the Year in Section 4 last fall. “I’m big on speed, quickness. Obviously, you gotta get separation if you’re not the biggest guy,” he explained. Rittle had 38 catches for 409 yards and seven touchdowns. He was also named a first team defensive back in the section after making 53 tackles. Conrad Weiser has gone (5-15) over the past two seasons. Shifting to Section 3 won’t be a walk in the park. Cocalico, the two-time defending District 3-5A champion, is also moving up to Section 3. In addition, perennial powerhouse Manheim Central is joining Section 3. The Barons have won a record 28 Section 2 titles and 18 District 3 championships. Warwick, Solanco, Garden Spot, and Fleetwood round out the new-look Section 3. The Scouts have an experienced head coach and quarterback. Alan Moyer enters his 22nd year at the helm in Robesonia. Moyer holds the school record with 138 victories. Conrad Weiser has finished with a winning record in 13 of the past 17 seasons. Donovan Gingrich will be a three-year starter at quarterback. He threw for 962 yards and ten scores last fall. Rittle, who’s an all-division baseball player, mentioned that the offensive line looks good. “They all put on a lot of weight, got a lot stronger,” he replied. Kaleb Britting, Kaleb Holl, Jack Heckman, and Charlie Shimp return up front. The Scouts are now in the 5A classification for football. They begin the season on their home turf. Conrad Weiser battles Abington on August 23.

Evan Johnson-Twin Valley https://berkssportsreport.com/evan-johnson-twin-valley-2/ Fri, 26 Jul 2024 19:43:02 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4326 Evan Johnson doesn’t just perform under the bright lights on Friday night. He also performs on stage. The Twin Valley RB/FS enjoys participating in high school musicals. As a sophomore, Johnson had a lead role in “Grease.” He’ll be a key figure once again this fall on the gridiron. The 5’11, 160-pound rising senior averaged 9.6 yards per carry a season ago. Johnson ran for 936 yards and a dozen touchdowns. The Raiders went (10-2, 5-1) and earned a share of the Section 3 championship with Ephrata and Garden Spot. Their season ended with a 65-28 loss at home to Manheim Central in the District 3-4A semifinals. “Ever since that Manheim [Central] game, we’ve been working very hard and we’re not looking back,” said Johnson. Twin Valley returns eight starters on offense and five on defense. Evan Myers, son of head coach Brett Myers, is back for his fourth year as the starting quarterback. He completed 59 percent of his passes and threw for 1,472 yards in 2023. Myers’ top target, junior Ben Grundy, had 27 receptions for 505 yards last year. Myers is the Raiders’ all-time passing leader. They can run the ball too. Johnson will be joined in the backfield by junior Drew Engle. As a sophomore, Engle piled up 1,411 yards on the ground with 13 scores. He averaged a remarkable 10.5 yards per carry. Navy commit Aris Drake (6’5, 295) will help pave the way for the two speedsters. Delaware Valley transfer Carter Faubel (6’1, 280) will step in at guard. Greyson Miller and Noah DiGiacomo both started on the offensive line as sophomores last fall. Lucas Myers, Evan’s younger brother, is a rising sophomore with a bright future at linebacker. Johnson stays busy after football season. He’s a sprinter on the track and field team, as well as a basketball player. “They help me a lot…hand-eye coordination, speed, being a leader,” said Johnson. He ran 11.51 seconds in the 100 meters. Twin Valley is moving down to Section 4 this year. The Raiders open the season at Berks Catholic on August 23. “I’m looking forward to it a lot, never played them. It will be a fight,” replied Johnson.

Evan Blickley-Wyomissing https://berkssportsreport.com/evan-blickley-wyomissing/ Sun, 19 Nov 2023 11:43:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=3902 Different year, same result. Wyomissing continued its dominance in the District 3-3A playoffs with a 42-14 victory over third-seeded West Perry on Saturday at Bob Wolfrum Field. The top-seeded Spartans earned their fifth consecutive District 3 title and 12th overall. As usual, the rushing attack was the key. Wyomissing piled up 314 yards on the ground and averaged 7.5 yards per carry. Tight end Evan Blickley takes a lot of pride in his blocking. “I just love doing it…put someone on their butt and help them up and say good try,” said the 6’3, 215-pound senior. Blickley only has three catches this season, but he understands that’s part of playing in a Wing-T offense. “I know I’m never gonna be an all-state receiving tight end. I’m okay with being a blocking tight end. It’s perfect for me,” he replied. Penn State commit Caleb Brewer (6’5, 290) moved from TE to OT this year. Blickley worked hard in the school’s first period strength program with assistant coach and athletic director Frank Ferrandino to add 30 pounds. He’s joined up front by Brewer and Max Tipton (6’2, 285) at offensive tackle. Thomas Weller and Francisco Fabian are the starting guards with Caleb Beane (6’3, 250) at center. After an interception by Ethan Brower, the (11-1) Spartans marched 72 yards on their opening possession. Princeton commit Ryker Jones capped the five minute and fourteen second drive with a 4-yard touchdown. Wyomissing went 80 yards on its next series. Collin Niedrowski dived into the end zone from a yard out. Marvin Armistead raced 26 yards down the left sideline for a 21-0 advantage with five minutes left in the second quarter. Logan Hyde then hit freshman Justice Hardy for a 16-yard TD pass with 26 seconds remaining before halftime. Hyde was 2-of-3 for 27 yards on the afternoon. The Spartans recovered an onside kick to begin the third quarter. Jones sprinted 48 yards down the right sideline for a 35-0 lead. Sophomore FB/LB Chase Eisenhower went 86 yards on a pick-six with 2:11 to go in the third quarter. Eisenhower, who added a team-high 76 rushing yards, gave Wyomissing a 42-7 edge. Niedrowski provided 59 yards on seven carries. Standout quarterback Marcus Quaker had touchdown runs of four and ten yards. The 170-pound senior was limited to 45 yards on 14 carries. Quaker was 8-of-15 for 104 yards and two interceptions. The (11-2) Mustangs committed nine penalties. Three of their players were ejected. They were searching for their first District 3 crown. West Perry fell to the Spartans 63-7 a season ago in the final. Wyomissing is (20-0) all-time in home playoff games. “Our coaching staff does a really great job of preparing us week by week…We watch a lot of film,” noted Blickley. His father, Chris, is the Spartans’ quarterback coach. They’re now preparing for District 4 champ Danville. That state quarterfinal will take place on Friday at 7pm at Albright.

Evan Gabaldon-Wilson https://berkssportsreport.com/evan-gabaldon-wilson/ Mon, 29 May 2023 12:54:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=3631 After a 12-2 loss to Central Dauphin on April 22nd, the Bulldogs were one game over the .500 mark. Things have changed in a big way for Wilson over the past month. “I think we’ve been getting closer as a team and having confidence in one another. I think our energy has been really good,” said Evan Gabaldon. The senior second baseman and designated hitter had three hits in a 4-2 victory over #11 seed Manheim Township in the District 3-6A semifinals. The seventh-seeded Bulldogs have won 12 of their last 13 contests. “Anybody can win any day. That’s just baseball,” remarked Gabaldon. Ryan Sekulski gave Wilson a 1-0 edge with a RBI infield single in the 1st inning. The (19-7) Bulldogs fell behind 2-1 in the third frame after Tyler Mulholland’s RBI single down the left field line. He had two of the (13-10) Blue Streaks’ seven hits. Sophomore Christo Hunsicker evened the game at 2-2 with a RBI double in the bottom of the 5th. Nick Fiorini followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home Gabaldon. Freshman Jack Gabel provided an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to right field in the 6th. Tommy Hunsicker was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs. Wilson finished with eight hits. Senior catcher Jordan Shutter went 1-for-3 and picked a runner off first base to end the top of the 6th. The Bulldogs got great pitching from Nick Crocona and Ben Kulp. Crocona allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits over five innings. The senior right-hander struck out two, walked one, and hit one batter. Kulp sealed the deal with two scoreless frames. He’s only a freshman. “Oh my God, I’ve been talking about that all season. I’m so excited to come back from college and see how he’s doing. It’s gonna be awesome,” emphasized Gabaldon. Army commit Gavin Glass gave up four runs on eight hits and three walks in 5.1 innings. He also hit two batters. Glass entered the day with a 1.23 ERA and 69K-11BB over 57 innings. His record slipped to (6-3). Wilson advanced to the District 3-6A championship on Tuesday at 7pm at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Bulldogs will face fifth-seeded Cedar Cliff. Wilson is searching for its fourth District 3 title. “It’s really exciting. I think we’re a special group and I’m excited to see what we can do,” said Gabaldon.

Evan Johnson-Twin Valley https://berkssportsreport.com/evan-johnson-twin-valley/ Thu, 10 Nov 2022 01:42:47 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=3171 There’s excitement surrounding the Twin Valley football program.  It started last year under Kris Olsen when the Raiders qualified for the District 3 playoffs for the first time in school history.  Twin Valley went (6-5) and achieved its first winning season since 2007.  Brett Myers took over as head coach and the momentum has continued in Elverson.  Sophomore RB/CB Evan Johnson has noticed an increased number of kids playing junior high football.  “We’re changing the culture around here. We’re impacting younger kids’ lives. We’re only going up from here,” emphasized Johnson.  The (6-4) Raiders are headed back to the District 3 tournament for the second year in a row.  They host (6-4) Milton Hershey in the Class 4A quarterfinals on Friday night.  “This is huge for us. I’m very proud of our guys. This is a really big opportunity to show what we’re made of,” noted Johnson.  Twin Valley earned the #4 seed by winning three of its last four contests.  The Raiders are averaging 34 points and 336 yards per game.  Johnson leads the team with 789 rushing yards.  The 5’10, 160-pound underclassman is averaging a sparkling eight yards per carry.  Johnson has a dozen rushing touchdowns and two through the air.  He opened some eyes last year by averaging 12.7 yards per carry on 27 touches.  Johnson has a great relationship with sophomore quarterback Evan Myers.  The head coach’s son has thrown for 1,098 yards and seven scores with just three interceptions.  Evan can use his legs as well.  He’s averaging 6.7 yards per carry with nine rushing touchdowns.  Twin Valley’s offense got a boost when a pair of baseball players decided to come out for the team.  Jaydon Goebel hadn’t played football since his freshman year.  The 6’2, 210-pound senior has provided a physical presence in the backfield.  Goebel, a catcher in the spring, has ran for 715 yards and a team-high 14TD.  Josh Zolty is a nice target at wide receiver for Myers.  The senior is averaging a whopping 20 yards per catch.  Zolty leads the Raiders with 16 receptions.  I asked Johnson about the additions of Goebel and Zolty.  He replied, “It’s so amazing. I love having them on the team. They brought some of that baseball culture over here.”  Twin Valley ended up (3-3) in the new-look Section 3 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League.  Solanco went undefeated and captured the Section 3 title.  Elizabethtown and Garden Spot finished one game ahead of the Raiders in the Section 3 standings.  Johnson opened the season with 69 yards and 2TD in a 39-12 victory at Schuylkill Valley.  In Week 9, he piled up 121 yards on only nine carries at Daniel Boone.  Johnson broke off touchdown runs of 41 and 59 yards in the 43-20 win over the Blazers.  He’s one of 15 sophomores on the Twin Valley roster which includes 22 juniors.  Johnson told me that he’s a Seahawks’ fan because his aunt lives in Seattle.  Tyler Lockett is his favorite player.  Johnson also plays basketball for the Raiders.  We talked about his favorite NBA player, as well as his favorite teachers.  He gave credit to his mom for motivating him.  “She’s my #1 fan. She’s the best,” said Johnson.

Evan Myers-Twin Valley https://berkssportsreport.com/evan-myers-twin-valley-2/ Sat, 10 Sep 2022 01:15:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=3007 Twin Valley hadn’t scored an offensive touchdown since the first quarter. When it mattered most, however, the Raiders put together a scoring drive to seal the deal. They took over at their 24-yard line with 5:46 remaining and marched 76 yards in three minutes and fifteen seconds. Jaydon Goebel rumbled 50 yards to set up Evan Myers’ 13-yard TD run with 2:31 to go. Twin Valley held off Conrad Weiser 28-16 in Elverson. I asked Myers about that critical possession late in the game. He replied, “It felt great. We stalled out a little in the second half, just missed a read here or there. But our offensive line fought the whole way and made it easy in the fourth quarter.” The Raiders’ OL averages 265 pounds. They’re blocking for a 6’2, 210-pound running back in Goebel. The senior finished with 117 yards on 15 carries. “He runs with his knees high and runs behind his pads. He’s a big kid. I wouldn’t want to tackle him myself. It’s gotta be awful for defenses,” said Myers. Twin Valley piled up 207 of its 342 total yards on the ground. Goebel and Josh Zolty, both baseball players, have given the Raiders a boost by joining the football team this year. Zolty caught five passes for 53 yards including a 36-yard touchdown that gave Twin Valley a 14-0 advantage late in the first quarter. Myers bought time on that play by scrambling to his left. The 5’10, 170-pound sophomore also used his legs for the first score of the night. He sprinted to his left and dove inside the pylon for a 15-yard touchdown that completed a 67-yard drive after the (1-2) Scouts went three and out. Myers found Everett Olsen for a 39-yard gain on that series. They’re two of the fifteen sophomores on the Raiders’ roster. Conrad Weiser got on the scoreboard thanks to a 72-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Donovan Gingrich to Josh Miller just 17 seconds into the second period. Twin Valley responded immediately. Freshman Drew Engle ripped off an 87-yard kickoff return that made it 21-7. Gingrich and Miller, a speedy 5’4 junior, hooked up again on the ensuing drive. The 49-yard completion led to a 37-yard field goal by Adam Noll. His 43-yard field goal attempt on the following series was partially blocked. The Scouts trailed 21-10 at halftime. They ran the ball eight consecutive times on their initial possession of the third quarter. Sevon Parham got four of those touches including a 7-yard touchdown. Gingrich, who also plays basketball, got tripped up on the 2-point conversion. Conrad Weiser was in the red zone in the fourth quarter when a pivotal personal foul penalty pushed them back to the 33-yard line. On third and 18, Gingrich was intercepted by sophomore Evan Johnson to keep it 21-16. Gingrich ended up 9-of-19 for 206 yards. He’s thrown for 552 yards in three contests. Miller has a dozen receptions, one fewer than teammate Trey Dianna. Parham, a 200-pound junior, contributed 97 yards on 21 carries. He had 18 carries in their first two games. The Scouts were limited to 317 yards. Myers was 9-of-14 for 135 yards. He ran for two scores and passed for another. He told me that he enjoys playing for his father, Brett. “It’s fun. I go home [and] I have a question, I don’t have to text anyone anymore. I can ask him to his face. Problems get solved very easily,” Evan emphasized. His dad guided Middletown to 72 wins and three District 3 championships over eight seasons. The former Pottstown head coach and Exeter assistant watched his son run for 42 yards against Conrad Weiser. The (2-1) Raiders are hoping to return to the District 3 playoffs. They made their first appearance last year under Kris Olsen. Meanwhile, the Scouts will host (3-0) ELCO next week.

One of the ninth graders is the starting quarterback. Evan Myers was an efficient 8-11 for 143 yards and a TD in Twin Valley’s season opening win over Garden Spot. The Raiders prevailed 27-24 in overtime. Myers told me that he has been watching game film since he was five years old. His father, Brett, was the head coach at Middletown for eight seasons. He guided the Blue Raiders to three consecutive District 3 titles and three appearances in the Class 3A state championship game from 2016-‘18. Evan loves talking football with his dad.
