District 3 Playoff Preview-Week 3 https://berkssportsreport.com/district-3-playoff-preview-week-3/ Fri, 19 Nov 2021 10:28:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=2069 #5 Wilson at #2 Harrisburg in the District 3-6A championship at 1pm on Saturday. These teams are red hot. The (9-3) Bulldogs have won seven straight. The (11-1) Cougars are riding an eight-game winning streak. Their only loss was to Gov. Mifflin 49-13 on September 17. Wilson is (42-21) all-time in the District 3 playoffs with seven titles. Harrisburg is (20-16) with three championships. The Cougars ended the Bulldogs’ season in 2018 and 2019. Their last postseason matchup was a thriller in West Lawn. Wilson needs to limit the big plays from Kyle Williams and Mahkai Hopkins. Williams scored 4TD including a 78-yard punt return in the semifinals vs. Hempfield. Hopkins ran for 204 yards and a score on 17 carries in that 32-10 victory. The Cougars have a freshman QB in Shawn Lee. His father played at Penn State. The Bulldogs have relied on their ground attack with 1,000 yard rushers Jadyn Jones and quarterback Brad Hoffman.

#4 Spring Grove at #1 Gov. Mifflin in the District 3-5A semifinals. PSU commit Nick Singleton is just shy of 6,100 career rushing yards. He’s coming off an epic performance against Warwick in the quarterfinals when he rumbled for 325 yards and 7TD on 15 carries! Singleton holds the Berks County record with 111 career touchdowns. The Mustangs are (9-0). The Rockets head to Shillington with a (10-1) mark. They’re facing a Berks County opponent for the second time in three weeks. Spring Grove defeated #13 Twin Valley 33-6 in the first round. 5’7, 180-pound senior Zyree Brooks ran for 4TD including a 96-yarder against the Raiders. The Rockets only blemish this season came at the hands of Central York 48-17 in early October. Gov. Mifflin is the defending champion in Class 5A.

#7 Exeter at #6 Cedar Cliff in the District 3-5A semifinals at West Shore Stadium. The (8-3) Eagles are soaring after a 43-26 win at #2 Manheim Central. The game wasn’t that close. Exeter led 43-8 in the fourth quarter! Eric Nangle made the most of his 25 carries. The 175-pound senior finished with 230 yards and 3TD. Nangle went over 1,200 yards for the season. He’s averaging seven yards per carry with 15TD. The Eagles have other very talented skill position players in Joey Schlaffer, J.R. Strauss, and Ty Yocum alongside senior QB Colin Payne. Exeter will try to slow down Jontae Morris who needs two yards to reach 2,000 this year. The 160-pound senior is averaging 7 yards a pop with 22TD. Ethan Dorrell’s top target is senior WR Trenten Smith. He has 51 catches for 810 yards and 6TD. The (10-2) Colts lost by 13 points to CD East and 56-0 to Bishop McDevitt. Cedar Cliff has three District 3 titles on its resume.

#4 Berks Catholic at #1 Bishop McDevitt in the District 3-4A semifinals. These programs are very familiar with making deep runs in the postseason. The Crusaders have won 14 District 3 championships; only Manheim Central has more with 18. Bishop McDevitt dropped its opener 21-0 to La Salle College High School. The Crusaders outscored their next nine opponents 545-35 with five shutouts! Quarterback Stone Saunders has thrown for 2,366 yards with 38TD and one INT. The freshman already has an offer from Michigan. He has a trio of dynamic wide receivers in Mario Easterly (38 catches-11TD), Kamil Foster (25 catches-12TD), and sophomore Rico Scott (21 catches-8TD). The (7-4) Saints prefer to keep things on the ground with Christian Cacchione, JayJay Jordan, and fullback Luke Hughes. Berks Catholic is (19-4) all-time in the District 3 playoffs with four titles. The Saints rallied late to get by #5 seed Cocalico 21-7 in the quarterfinals. Taking on the Mid-Penn Keystone Division champ will be a much different challenge for Berks Catholic.

#2 Boiling Springs at #1 Wyomissing in the District 3-3A championship on Saturday at 1pm. If you’re a fan of the Wing-T offense, this is the game for you. Head coach Brad Zell brought the run-heavy approach to Boiling Springs and he has turned the Bubblers’ program around. 170-pound senior Joey Menke is over 1,100 yards this year. He had 135 yards and a touchdown in a 35-7 win over #3 seed Hamburg in the semifinals. Menke also caught a 38-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Colin Lunde. 175-pound fullback Aidan Metzger added 55 yards and 3TD against the Hawks. That one was tied at 7 at halftime. The (11-1) Bubblers finished on top of the Mid-Penn Capital Division. Their only loss was to Mechanicsburg 39-34 on September 17. The Spartans haven’t tasted defeat all season. Their closest contest came last week in the semifinals vs. #5 Middletown. Fullback Tommy Grabowski had 2TD runs in a 14-0 shutout. Wyomissing allowed just 48 total yards. The Spartans blew out the Bubblers 47-7 last year in the semifinals. Wyomissing outgained Boiling Springs 400-87 on the ground. Bob Wolfrum and the Spartans are seeking their tenth District 3 championship and third in a row. The Bubblers have never captured District gold.

District 3 Playoff Preview-Week 2 https://berkssportsreport.com/district-3-playoff-preview-week-2/ Thu, 11 Nov 2021 20:04:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=2022 #5 Wilson at #1 Central York in the Class 6A semifinals. The Bulldogs have won six straight after a (2-3) start. They’re pounding the rock on offense. Wilson ran the ball 48 times for 356 yards in a 50-32 win at York High last week. The Bulldogs only attempted six passes. Jadyn Jones and Brad Hoffman combined for 39 carries, 333 yards and 5TD. Central York is the defending 6A champ. The unbeaten Panthers replaced nine starters on each side of the ball, but returned 6’2 senior quarterback Beau Pribula. The PSU commit is completing 76% of his passes with 30TD and 5INT. He’s thrown for 2,100 yards and ran for nearly 400 more. The Bulldogs will have to be aware of 230-pound DE/TE Trenton Dunnick. Wilson is (41-21) all-time in the District 3 playoffs.

#8 Warwick at #1 Gov. Mifflin in the Class 5A quarterfinals. This was the matchup we were expecting to see in last year’s championship game, but the Warriors had to forfeit due to Covid-19 issues. Warwick is a much different team. Nolan Rucci, Caleb Schmitz, Colton Miller, and Joey McCracken all graduated. The Warriors were undefeated going into last season’s final. This year’s squad is (7-4). Warwick did hand Manheim Central its only loss of the season 35-28. The (8-0) Mustangs are the top-ranked 5A team in the state. They’re averaging 49.5 points. PSU commit Nick Singleton is Berks County’s career leader in rushing yards (5,769) and touchdowns (104). As head coach Jeff Lang told me this week, “Never poke a lion.” The Mustangs are making their 16th consecutive appearance in the District 3 tournament.

#7 Exeter at #1 Manheim Central in the Class 5A quarterfinals. The (7-3) Eagles are coming off a 38-21 victory over #10 South Western. Exeter has a lot more talent than a typical seventh-seeded team. Joey Schlaffer (PSU commit), J.R. Strauss (Villanova commit), Ty Yocum, Eric Nangle, Colin Payne, Anthony Caccese, Lucas Palange, Kyle Lash and company make the Eagles a dangerous group. They took Central York down to the wire in their season opener. The Barons are an experienced bunch with eight starters back on offense and seven on defense. They’ve gone from (3-5) to (9-1). Quite a turnaround. 5’11, 165-pound senior Judd Novak is a clever quarterback. If you’re looking for playoff pedigree, Manheim Central has won a record 18 District 3 titles including ten straight from 1992-2001!

#5 Cocalico at #4 Berks Catholic in the Class 4A quarterfinals. I’ll have live updates of this one. It should be over quickly because both teams love to keep the ball on the ground. The (6-4) Eagles average 45 runs and four pass attempts per game in their flexbone offense. The Saints’ run-pass ratio is 40-6 out of their Wing-T formation. Cocalico averages 299 rushing yards per game. Berks Catholic isn’t far behind at 245. Anthony Bourassa has had a huge senior season. He’s rushed for 1,863 yards and 23TD. The 5’8, 180-pound senior comes in with 217 carries this year. The Saints have a sweet trio in the backfield with halfbacks Christian Cacchione (1,076 rushing yards) and JayJay Jordan (679). Plus, 225-pound fullback Luke Hughes (465). Jordan leads Berks Catholic with 3INT and 12 catches (seven have gone for TD’s). The Saints are (18-4) all-time in the District 3 playoffs with four championships.

#3 Hamburg at #2 Boiling Springs in the Class 3A semifinals. This is uncharted territory for the (7-3) Hawks. They had never won a District 3 playoff game until last week when they held off Bermudian Springs 31-27. Longtime Schuylkill Valley head coach Jeff Chillot has already made his mark on Hawk Hill. Hamburg has a promising 6’4, 195-pound junior quarterback in Xander Menapace and an electric RB/KR in senior Diohnny Ruiz. Boiling Springs is riding a seven-game winning streak. The (10-1) Bubblers blew out Lancaster Catholic 56-10 in the quarterfinals. Mechanicsburg handed Boiling Springs its only loss 39-34.

#5 Middletown at #1 Wyomissing in the Class 3A semifinals on Saturday at 1pm. The Spartans and Blue Raiders are meeting for the sixth consecutive year in the District 3 playoffs! Middletown got the better of Wyomissing from 2016-‘18. The Spartans have taken the last two matchups including a 38-16 victory last year in the final. Wyomissing will be focused on 6’3, 240-pound fullback Tajae Broadie. He had a career-high 174 yards and 3TD last week at West Perry. Broadie, who also plays DE, has numerous Division I offers including Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Syracuse and Minnesota. The Blue Raiders are (6-4), while the Spartans are unblemished at (11-0). They destroyed Northern Lebanon 65-3 in the quarterfinals. Wyomissing has depth in the backfield with Tommy Grabowski, Amory Thompson, Drew Eisenhower and Charlie McIntyre. Plus two Division I talents up front in 310-pound junior Jven Williams and 6’4 senior TE/DL Aiden Mack (Richmond commit). Head coach Bob Wolfrum has 333 wins and nine District 3 titles over 35 seasons with the Spartans. Wyomissing has a record of (36-18) in the District 3 tournament.
