Columbia – Berks Sports Report https://berkssportsreport.com Paul Roberts Fri, 10 Oct 2025 15:54:34 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=7.0 Johnny Sauppee-Berks Catholic https://berkssportsreport.com/johnny-sauppee-berks-catholic/ Fri, 10 Oct 2025 15:47:41 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=5174 Berks Catholic’s offense has done its damage on the ground this season. The Saints only had two touchdown passes in their first seven games. On Thursday, they took a few shots through the air and it paid off. Johnny Sauppee tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the first half and Berks Catholic blew out Columbia 37-0. “It feels great. We’ve been working on it all week, implementing more play-action,” explained Sauppee. The (6-2, 5-0) Saints have won six of their last seven contests.

The Crimson Tide faced a fourth-and-5 at Berks Catholic’s 44-yard line on the opening possession. Starting quarterback Cameron McClair was moved outside to wide receiver. Kareem Nichols’ pass to him down the right sideline was intercepted by sophomore Logan Gonzalez. Berks Catholic marched 90 yards on its first drive which lasted five minutes and ten seconds. The only pass was Sauppee’s 13-yard TD to Nick DeFazio. Sauppee faked a handoff and found his 6’2, 215-pound tight end wide open in the middle of the end zone.

Aidan Curley broke off a 22-yard run to midfield midway through the second quarter. He picked up seven more yards on fourth-and-3 at Columbia’s 45-yard line. Curley ended up with 73 yards on seven carries. Sauppee hit Coy Koller in the right flat for a 12-yard touchdown and a 14-0 advantage with 2:42 remaining before halftime. Koller is a 5’10, 165-pound sophomore who starts at running back and linebacker. “I think he’s really stepping up for us. He’s a state caliber wrestler. He can do it for years to come. He’ll be really good,” stated Sauppee. The 6’2, 205-pound senior has been starting at quarterback since Week 4. Sauppee took over after junior Cole Harter was injured in a 48-41 loss to Bethlehem Catholic. Harter is healthy again and head coach Dave Stahler said both quarterbacks are doing well at practice. Sauppee was 3-for-7 for 22 yards against the (3-5, 2-3) Crimson Tide.

Reading transfer Jeremiah Camara began the second half with a big kickoff return to Columbia’s 43-yard line. Camara then took a sweep to the left, cut up the middle, bounced it outside, and raced 41 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. The 5’8, 175-pound junior finished with 100 yards on a dozen carries. “He’s been great. He’s been working hard at football and basketball. He does a lot of good things for us. He’s also another threat downfield when we need him and he runs the ball very hard,” noted Sauppee. In five games, Camara has piled up 503 rushing yards and 5 TD on 53 touches.

A long punt pushed the Saints back to their 5-yard line midway through the third quarter. Koller busted a 55-yard run up the middle to get the drive started. Curley scored from ten yards out on a counter with 3:31 left in the third period. Berks Catholic covered 95 yards in just over two minutes and extended its lead to 28-0. The Saints’ defense added a safety early in fourth quarter. Defensive end Eric Bennethum and inside linebacker Ryan Spatz, a pair of juniors, wrapped up sophomore running back Chase Marley in the end zone. After Berks Catholic got the ball back, Faith Zudie took off on a 48-yard touchdown run with 9:51 to go. The Saints had a total of 389 yards including 367 on the ground. Their defense held the Crimson Tide to 86 yards. Sauppee, who also plays linebacker, mentioned that containing McClair was the key. “He’s elusive, he can get out of the pocket and make some plays downfield. That was very big for us to eliminate those [plays] and make him check it down to the flat,” replied Sauppee. McClair, a 6’2 junior, was 10-of-16 for 74 yards.

Berks Catholic travels to Hamburg next Friday. The Saints host Annville-Cleona in their regular season finale. That game could decide the Section 5 championship in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. The Dutchmen are unbeaten in league play at (4-0).

Justice Hardy-Wyomissing https://berkssportsreport.com/justice-hardy-wyomissing/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 22:56:27 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4387 Justice Hardy burst onto the scene at Wyomissing with twelve combined touchdowns and four interceptions as a freshman. The highlights kept coming in his first game as a sophomore. Hardy reached the end zone four times in a 35-21 victory over Southern Columbia at Bob Wolfrum Field. The Tigers went (15-1) a season ago and claimed their seventh straight PIAA championship. Head coach Jim Roth entered Saturday with 499 career wins. He’ll have to wait for #500 after some very uncharacteristic sloppy play in the opening half. Junior quarterback Anthony Martino fumbled the snap on the first play from scrimmage. Hardy raced eleven yards around the right edge for a quick 7-0 advantage. On the ensuing drive, Southern Columbia punter Preston Shadle dropped the snap and was buried at the 38-yard line. Hardy took a sweep to the right for another 11-yard score with 4:22 remaining in the period. Early in the second quarter, a snap went over Shadle’s head and he recovered all the way back at the 1-yard line. Tyler Niedrowski rumbled in for a touchdown with 9:23 to go before halftime. The Spartans added another score late in the second quarter. Danny Fleischood’s 45-yard run set up a 3-yard TD for Hardy. It was 28-0 with 27 seconds left in the half. The lead grew to 35-7 when Hardy broke off an electrifying 46-yard touchdown run down the right sideline with 3:26 to play in the third quarter. He gave credit to the offensive line. The front five includes 285-pound senior guard Max Tipton and 250-pound senior tackles Keaton Piacine and Caleb Beane. “They do not disappoint. A high bar has been set and they are right there. They’re huge, they move quick, they’re great. I love running behind all of them,” said Hardy. Francisco Fabian, Darion Quintana, and Ayden Jimenez (6’2, 255) round out the offensive line. A 14-yard TD run by Brayden Andrews pulled the Tigers within 35-14 with 2:13 left in the third period. Sophomore quarterback Ayden Hockenbroch found Travis Wegrzynowicz down the left sideline for a 34-yard score with 2:38 remaining. Wyomissing lost a fumble on the next play from scrimmage and Southern Columbia took over at the 25-yard line. A sack on fourth down by 215-pound linebacker Chase Eisenhower ended the Tigers’ hopes. Hardy finished with 121 yards on twelve carries. He’s joined in the backfield by Eisenhower, Fleischood, Niedrowski, and Marcus Armistead. They’re all juniors. “We’re super young, but when we reach our full potential it’s gonna be great,” stated Hardy. Halfback Derek Macrina is the only skill position player who’s a senior. Sophomore quarterback Teddy White was 2-of-3 for just twelve yards. Southern Columbia lost its entire offensive backfield and eight starters on defense from last year’s state championship squad. The Tigers outscored the Spartans 21-7 in the second half. Hockenbroch tossed a pair of TD passes. The early miscues and Hardy’s performance were too much to overcome. “My coaches all help me stay very humble. I always have something to improve,” noted Hardy.

Chase Eisenhower-Wyomissing https://berkssportsreport.com/chase-eisenhower-wyomissing-2/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 16:12:20 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4349 Wyomissing is starting the season with a bang. The Spartans host Southern Columbia on August 24th. “There’s been a lot of buzz about it. We know how good they are so we’re gonna come ready to play for them,” said Chase Eisenhower. The Tigers have won seven consecutive state championships and fourteen overall. Jim Roth will be looking for his 500th career victory. Wyomissing head coach Bob Wolfrum has a few wins under his belt as well. 362 to be exact. They’re the two winningest active coaches in Pennsylvania. Wolfrum is preparing for his 38th season at the helm of the Spartans. They’ve claimed five straight District 3 titles. Wyomissing has gone (61-6) over the past five seasons. J’ven Williams and Caleb Brewer have moved on to Penn State, but Eisenhower remains very confident in the offensive line. “They look as good as we’ve ever been…I feel like we’re just as good. We have a lot of depth,” stated Eisenhower. The 5’11, 220-pound rising junior rumbled for 1,092 yards and 17 touchdowns while averaging 7.2 yards per carry. Eisenhower, a three-year starter, also made a team-high 70 tackles from his inside linebacker position. Max Tipton, Caleb Beane, and Francisco Fabian return up front. Tipton will be shifting from tackle to guard. Their Wing-T attack piled up 312 yards per game on the ground last fall. The Spartans finished (12-2, 6-1) after falling to Northwestern Lehigh 33-24 in the PIAA-3A semifinals. Eisenhower mentioned that tight end Andrew Bresnahan is a player to keep an eye on this season. Fans will definitely be focused on rising sophomore Justice Hardy. He averaged nearly nine yards per carry, scored a dozen touchdowns, and made four interceptions in 2023. “It’s always great knowing that guy can get a touchdown or first down whenever he wants,” noted Eisenhower. The Spartans bring back six starters on defense and four on offense. Tyler Niedrowski and Derek Macrina are key figures on both sides of the ball. While much remains the same in Wyomissing, there is one significant change. The Spartans have been bumped up to Class 4A. They’ve reached at least the state semifinals in four consecutive years.
