The Saints pulled out a 43-34 victory. On Monday, Berks Catholic took care of business early in West Lawn. The (12-5, 8-0) Saints scored the first nine points and led 21-6 after eight minutes. It was 34-14 at halftime. Berks Catholic rolled to a 51-32 win and remained atop the Division 1 standings. Gianna Roberts provided a spark. The 5’3 junior connected three times from beyond the arc in the opening quarter. “The crowd was going crazy. We felt like we had all the momentum. It was insane, they just kept going in,” said Caraline Herb. Roberts had made five 3-pointers in the Saints’ previous 16 contests. Her career-high before facing the Bulldogs was four points. She ended up with nine. Berks Catholic was on fire from long range. The Saints were 8-of-11 in the first half! Herb splashed five of Berks Catholic’s eleven treys. The 5’7 senior guard had a game-high 23 points including eight in the third period. The Saints were on top 45-24 with one quarter to go. Herb is 57 points shy of 1,000 for her career. The sharpshooter has buried 192 3-pointers. She will continue playing hoops at Division II Chestnut Hill. “It was a huge goal because not everyone has that opportunity,” remarked Herb. Longtime head coach Bob Birmingham has a trio of sophomores in his starting lineup including 5’10 forward Sydney Corado who contributed eight points against Wilson. “I love playing with them. We have such a tight bond right now. It’s great,” replied Herb. Birmingham picked up his 629th career win over 34 years. Wilson head coach Chris Gallo has an even younger squad this season. Three freshman start for the (9-8, 5-3) Bulldogs and two more are in the rotation. Laila Jones is one of the rising stars in Berks County. The 5’6 guard poured in 18 points in the first matchup with Berks Catholic. Herb and company limited Jones to four points this time around. Junior guard Jasilyn Moncada finished with a team-high seven points. One bright spot was the return of 5’11 freshman center Violet Houck. She had been out since December 13th due to an injury. The Saints host Muhlenberg on Thursday. Herb talked about the funniest players on the team and her favorite teacher at Berks Catholic. She also mentioned that ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is her favorite TV show. Herb has been dissecting opponents all season long.
