Berks Catholic’s Historic Season Ends

Berks Catholic was six outs away from reaching the state championship game. The Saints led Mount Carmel 3-1 in the bottom of the 6th before falling 4-3 in the PIAA-3A semifinals on Monday. Sophomore Gabe Yuskoski delivered a two-out, walk-off single to left-center in the 7th at Wenger Field in Fredericksburg. “Sometimes it’s easier to lose if you get blown out,” acknowledged Berks Catholic head coach Brandon Shurr. The (20-8) Saints and the (20-4) Red Tornadoes were both making their first appearance in the state semifinals. Each team had its ace on the mound. West Chester commit Trey Stricker entered the day with a (7-1) record and a eye-popping 0.64 ERA. Drew Yagodzinskie had allowed just one hit over his previous 21 innings. The Monmouth commit had piled up 88 strikeouts in 52.2 frames for the District 4 champions. Berks Catholic, however, got to Yagodzinskie early in the contest. Mikey Fidler singled and then scored on Dennys Rodriguez’s double to left-center in the top of the 1st. Mount Carmel tied it up in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out, RBI single to center by Lukas Carpenter. The junior outfielder came into the game with a .438 batting average. Carpenter provided two of his team’s four hits. The 3rd inning began with Brock Shrawder lofting a fly ball to right field that got lost in the sun for a double. After Stricker singled, Fidler hit a pop up to shallow right field. The ball dropped allowing Shrawder to score, but the Red Tornadoes did get a force out at second base. Rodriguez came through again with a RBI single to left to put the Saints in front 3-1. Rodriguez, a catcher who’s committed to Shepherd, accounted for two of Berks Catholic’s five hits. Yagodzinskie (7-1) found his groove after the 3rd and didn’t allow a hit over the final four innings. He retired 14 straight batters. “He got a bunch of our lefties out with changeups. It was a lot more of the secondary stuff. The off-speed stuff was what just kept you off-balance enough,” explained Shurr. Yagodzinskie went the distance with eleven strikeouts and no walks. He’s only given up 27 hits all season. Mount Carmel opened the bottom of the 6th with two walks and an infield single by Carpenter. Stricker struck out Clarke Cartwright with the bases full before reaching the pitch limit of 105. “Trey has been great all year. He’s gonna have a great baseball career at West Chester and hopefully beyond that. He’s been our #1 all year. Unfortunately, he just ran out of gas a little bit in the 6th,” replied Shurr. Fidler took over on the mound and threw a wild pitch that allowed Yagodzinskie to score and make it 3-2. Carpenter attempted to score all the way from second base on the play, but he was tagged out at the plate by Fidler. With two outs, the Saints committed an error on Walker McGinley’s grounder to shortstop which evened the score at 3-3. Fidler struck out Brody Brinkash to end the 6th. Brayden Brinkash was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the 7th. Freshman Jason Klokis then hit a ground ball to third base that looked like a possible double play opportunity. However, Aidan Curley’s throw to second was low and Berks Catholic didn’t get an out. Yagodzinskie walked with one out to load the bases. Carpenter hit a pop up back to Fidler for the second out. Yuskoski, who entered the afternoon hitting .279, ripped a clean single to knock in the game-winning run. Fidler was charged with one unearned run on one hit in 1.1 innings. Stricker gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits over 5.1 innings. He finished with eight strikeouts and four walks. Both Stricker and Fidler hit one batter. The Saints committed three errors, while the Red Tornadoes had one. Berks Catholic had a very memorable season. The Saints reached the BCIAA Championship Game as a #7 seed and won the District 3-3A title this season. Shurr gave credit to his senior class which includes Stricker, Fidler, Rodriguez, and Shrawder. “This senior group really set the tone early. We grew every year. To finish in the final four [in the state playoffs] is a great achievement,” said Shurr.

It all started with a one-out single by No. 6 hitter Victor Mejia. When the 7th inning rally was over, Berks Catholic had put six runs on the board and taken a 11-6 lead over rival Wyomissing at FirstEnergy Stadium. That would be the final score as the seventh-seeded Saints advanced to the BCIAA Championship for the first time since 2014. “This team has been getting better throughout the year…We kind of figured some things out as a team to put us in a good spot. They’re really executing right now at the right time,” said head coach Brandon Shurr. After Heriel Ramirez reached on an error, sophomore Cole Harter delivered a RBI single to right field to tie it up in the 7th. “Cole had a great hit. Sometimes the bottom of our lineup struggles a little bit, but today they came through,” noted Shurr. No. 9 hitter Brock Shrawder got down a safety squeeze bunt which scored Henry Pflomm for a 7-6 advantage. “We saw that Wyo. wasn’t really up. They weren’t really attacking the baseball. Lefty on the mound, we’re thinking Brock puts a good bunt down. If we execute our part, really hard play to defend,” explained Shurr. Spartans’ relief pitcher Ryan Graham opted to come home with the throw which was late. Trey Stricker, who’s committed to West Chester, followed with a RBI single to make it 8-6. After Mikey Fidler was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Dennys Rodriguez knocked in a run with an infield single. The Shepherd commit went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI. A sacrifice fly to left field by Owen Schalk put Berks Catholic on top 10-6. Aidan Curley drew his third walk of the afternoon which loaded the bases again. Mejia was then hit by a pitch to force in the final run. Wyomissing was attempting to reach the Berks League Final for the first time since 1994. The sixth-seeded Spartans were in front 6-4 after Birkley Ziegler’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 5th. Wyomissing finished with nine hits and left nine men on base. The Saints had seven hits and stranded ten runners. Each team committed three errors. Rodriguez launched a two-run homer to right in the 1st. In the bottom of the inning, Zander Westwood lofted a fly ball down the right field line. Mejia lost it in the sun which allowed three runs to score for the Spartans. Parker LaFerriere made it 4-2 with a sacrifice fly in the 2nd. A single through the left side by Rodriguez allowed Fidler to score all the way from first base in the 3rd. Wyomissing answered with a run in the bottom half. Westwood’s single drove in Teddy White who had tripled. Berks Catholic trailed 5-3 after three innings. A two-out error by the Spartans in the top of the 4th got the Saints within 5-4. Fidler’s RBI groundout to second base in the 6th made it 6-5. Four of Berks Catholic’s seven hits came in the 7th. Wyomissing committed a pair of errors in that inning. Graham allowed six runs, three earned, on four hits over 1.2 innings. The junior walked three and hit two batters. Chase Bailey, another junior, gave up five runs, four earned, on three hits in five innings. He walked seven and also hit two batters. Fidler got the start for the (15-6) Saints, but only lasted two innings. He was charged with five runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks. Shrawder limited the (14-7) Spartans to one run on three hits in three innings of relief. The senior righty struck out three and walked two. Pflomm came through in the clutch for Berks Catholic. The junior tossed two hitless innings to pick up the win. “Those were our two quickest innings. Henry threw a ton of strikes…Henry was great, much needed at the end of that game,” said Shurr. The Saints will battle top-seeded Gov. Mifflin in the BCIAA Championship. Weather permitting, that game is scheduled for 7pm on Tuesday at Owls Field in West Lawn. Berks Catholic is searching for its first county title in baseball.

Berks Catholic got production up and down its batting order in a 12-8 win over Kutztown. The Saints piled up 15 hits in a battle of division leaders on Monday. Head coach Brandon Shurr likes the depth in his lineup. “I think it’s one of our strengths as a team. We don’t have a big drop off,” he emphasized. Outfielders Michael Bradley and Mikey Fidler combined for six hits, four runs, and 3RBI. They hit seventh and ninth respectively. The Cougars scored twice in the opening frame thanks to a sacrifice fly and a passed ball. Berks Catholic responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Third baseman Aidan Curley stroked a line drive single to center to get the Saints on the board. Bradley then walked with the bases loaded. He’s hitting .455 with a team-high 13 runs this season. Berks Catholic exploded for seven runs in the 3rd inning. Curley, Maxx Mace, Fidler, and Dillon Walls provided RBI singles. Dennys Rodriguez drew a walk with the bases full to make it 7-2. Parker Nein followed with a grounder to shortstop. Kutztown got one out, but couldn’t turn the double play. Walls came around from second base to give the Saints two runs on the play. “He really bothers teams when he’s on the bases. He runs the bases really well,” noted Shurr. Walls went 2-for-5 and knocked in two runs. The sophomore middle infielder leads the club with a .500 batting average. Nein added three hits and drove in a couple of runs. The Penn State Harrisburg commit is hitting .483 with a team-high 13RBI. “He’s really our emotional leader. When he has a good game, the other guys attach to him and go with him,” said Shurr. The (7-7, 5-2) Cougars got a run in the 4th when Ashton Dunn stole third and scored on a throwing error. Dunn’s RBI single to right field in the 5th pulled Kutztown within 9-4. Nein hit a double down the third base line in the bottom of that inning to put Berks Catholic on top 10-4. Fidler and Walls gave the Saints some insurance runs in the 6th with RBI singles. Trey Stricker improved to (3-0, 3.71). The junior righty allowed six runs, five earned, on ten hits over six innings. Stricker struck out nine and walked only one. He has 22 strikeouts in 17 innings. Colten Mathias took the loss. The junior was charged with five runs, four earned, in just two innings. Mathias gave up five hits and walked three. Sophomore Chris Bergstrom allowed three runs on three hits without getting an out. Kole Schuler then took over on the mound. The senior limited Berks Catholic to two runs over three innings. Colin Hamm finished with four of the Cougars’ twelve hits. He had a two-run single off Mace in the 7th. Leadoff hitter Colin Diehl was 3-for-3 with a walk. Kutztown had won seven of its previous ten games. The Cougars remain atop the Division 4 standings. They captured their sixth District 3 championship and reached the PIAA-2A semifinals last year. Meanwhile, the (8-2, 6-1) Saints are trying to win the Division 3 crown and qualify for the BCIAA playoffs for the first time since 2018. “It means a lot to be one of our initial goals,” said Shurr.

Experience is a great teacher. Berks Catholic only had two seniors on its baseball roster last year. Head coach Brandon Shurr started five freshman and a sophomore. While the 2021 season was a difficult one for the Saints, that experience is now paying dividends. Berks Catholic has gone from (5-15, 2-10) to (12-8, 7-5). The Saints put together a 6-game winning streak in April. They defeated Hamburg and Oley Valley earlier this season. Shurr told me that this year has been much more enjoyable. He’s glad to see his seniors, including RJ Emrich and Chris Avram, having success. Shurr said that they bring stability to the lineup. Emrich is hitting .373 with five doubles and 16 RBI. The all-division catcher has an OPS of .888. Emrich is committed to Alvernia. Avram has increased his batting average by 77 points. The speedy right fielder is hitting .375 with a team-high 23 runs. Shurr added that Kevin Lawlor is having a terrific season. The junior second baseman leads Berks Catholic with a .406 average and 19 RBI. Lawlor has also scored 19 runs. The Saints averaged 4.3 runs last year. Their run production is up to 6.5 per game in 2022. Berks Catholic is hitting .294 as a team. The Saints still have a young squad. Shurr is utilizing a handful of underclassmen including Dennys Rodriguez. The promising freshman is a very advanced hitter for his age. He’ll take over for Emrich behind the plate next season. Rodriguez is batting .367 with a .483 on-base percentage and 18 RBI. His average with RISP is an eye-popping .500. Rodriguez homered in Monday’s 8-0 victory over rival Wyomissing. Shurr mentioned that the regular season finale versus the Spartans was significant for several reasons. Parker Nein limited Wyomissing to three hits in a complete game effort. The 6’1 sophomore is (5-0) with a save and a 1.08 ERA over 39 innings. Opponents are hitting .196 off of Nein. Shurr likes how he pitches to contact and keeps batters off-balance. Nein has allowed just 27 hits with 37 strikeouts. We talked about the intense playoff race in Division 3. Hamburg and Oley Valley qualified for the BCIAA tournament as the division champion and runner-up respectively. Berks Catholic and Wyomissing were only two games behind. Shurr explained how he’s trying to keep his players sharp during this break. The Saints’ District 3-3A playoff opener isn’t until Monday, May 23rd. They’re currently the #3 seed. The top six teams qualify in Class 3A. Finally, we had some fun discussing fantasy football.
