In some cases, these teams resemble a family. That’s literally the case at Fleetwood. Mel Fegely, who had been an assistant, is the new head coach of the Tigers. His sons, Beau and Hunter, both play for him. “It’s fun, he’s coached me my whole life. We talk football at practice. We talk football at home. We talk football in the car. We’re always talking football and always thinking about how we can get better as a team,” said Beau Fegely. The 5’8, 165-pound senior was named a second team running back and defensive back in Section 3 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League last year. Fegely ran for nearly 800 yards and scored fifteen touchdowns. The three-year starter added three interceptions and a pair of defensive touchdowns.

Fegely attends Oley Valley High School. Fleetwood and Oley have a co-op agreement when it comes to football. “I love it. Some of my best friends go to Fleetwood. Playing football really gives us a great bond. I grow closer to them every single day. Lifting with them is fun. Practice with them is fun. The better the chemistry is between the players, the better the team will be,” emphasized Fegely. The Tigers return seven starters on offense and four on defense. Chase Adams was a first team wide receiver in Section 3 a season ago. The 6’1, 200-pound senior is switching to quarterback this fall. One of his primary targets will be Bryce Ryan, a 6’4, 215-pound tight end. Ryan will also be an impact player at defensive end. Parker Detwiler is back as well. He was a second team pick at outside linebacker in Section 3 last fall. “He’s fast and he can hit hard,” noted Fegely.

The Tigers finished (2-8, 0-6) under Steve Pangburn in 2025. Pangburn left Fleetwood after four years at the helm to become the head coach at Daniel Boone. The Tigers lost their final seven games last season. They’ve dropped twelve in a row in league play. “We want a winning season. The past few years haven’t been great. Everybody looks down on Fleetwood, but we’ve got a whole new coaching staff. We’re excited as seniors and we’re ready to ball out,” replied Fegely.

The first game on the Tigers’ schedule is a road trip to Kutztown this Friday. After non-league contests at Upper Perkiomen and home against ELCO, Fleetwood will open Section 3 play at Garden Spot on September 18th. Fegely is a sprinter on the track team and also plays basketball. His favorite running back is Saquon Barkley. Fegely mentioned that he hurdled his younger brother, Hunter, at a practice last year. “I feel like my game kind of resembles [Saquon Barkley]. I’m quick, I’m agile, and I’m fast,” said Fegely.

Picking off three passes in one quarter is almost unheard of. Beau Fegely did just that in Fleetwood’s 31-24 win at Schuylkill Valley last week. “I just stuck to my coverage. The quarterback kept throwing the ball my way,” explained Fegely. The 5’8, 165-pound junior had a 48-yard pick-6. The outside linebacker/safety is being utilized on offense for the first time this season and it’s paying big dividends. Fegely has rushed for 388 yards and six touchdowns on 43 carries. He erupted for 224 yards and four scores in the season opener. The Tigers defeated Kutztown 54-34. “First of all, he’s a hard worker. He’s explosive, has good vision, and is strong; all the things you want to see in a back,” noted head coach Steve Pangburn. Fegely finished with 110 yards and a touchdown against the Panthers last Friday. Pangburn mentioned that Fegely prepared himself by getting in great shape during the offseason. Don’t be fooled by his size, Fegely can squat 400 pounds. He attends Oley Valley High School and competes for Fleetwood through a co-op agreement between the schools.

Fleetwood returned six starters on each side of the ball from a team that went (3-7, 0-6) in 2024. Chase McMonagle is back at quarterback. The 5’11, 165-pound senior has completed 51% of his passes for 441 yards and six touchdowns. McMonagle threw for nearly 1,400 yards last fall. “He knows everybody’s job on the field. Whenever you have a question, he knows,” replied Fegely. Juniors Bryce Ryan and Bryan Robledo have been the primary targets for McMonagle this year. Ryan leads the (2-1) Tigers with 13 catches for 140 yards and a touchdown. His size (6’3, 205) can create mismatches in the passing game. “He’s a very big part of our offense. Whenever we need short yardage, we look his way,” said Fegely. Robledo has added 11 receptions for 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Juniors Nate Kummerer and Chase Adams are other skill position players to keep an eye on. Colin Dragan, Shane Pekuri, Anthony Garipoli, Gabe Narvez, and Johny Ulicne comprise the offensive line. Dragan (6’2, 360) and Pekuri (6’3, 265) are at right guard and right tackle respectively.

Fleetwood travels to Robesonia on Friday. Conrad Weiser is off to a (3-0) start. The Scouts went (10-1) last season and claimed the Section 3 championship in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. “It’s definitely a big game since it’s league play now, but we just look at it like it’s our next opponent,” stated Fegely.
