Archbishop – Berks Sports Report https://berkssportsreport.com Paul Roberts Wed, 12 Mar 2025 04:10:28 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.7.2 Archbishop Carroll ends Wilson’s season https://berkssportsreport.com/archbishop-carroll-ends-wilsons-season/ Wed, 12 Mar 2025 04:07:44 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4815 Going into Tuesday night, Wilson head coach Matt Raquet thought Archbishop Carroll would be the best team that the Bulldogs had faced all season. That’s saying a lot considering Wilson’s grueling non-league schedule. The Bulldogs battled the Patriots before falling 60-41 in the second round of the PIAA-6A tournament at Spring-Ford. The final score doesn’t tell the whole story. Wilson put forth a gutsy effort and led the top seed from District 12 early in the third quarter. Kailani Hardy jammed eight of her team-high 20 points into the third period. “It starts on the defensive end of the floor and I thought she played great on the defensive end. The better the competition, she steps up to that plate every single time,” noted Raquet. Hardy got off to a quick start. The 5’9 sophomore knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and had eight points in the opening quarter. Archbishop Carroll, the runner-up in the mighty Philadelphia Catholic League, trailed 13-10 after eight minutes. The Bulldogs grabbed a 15-11 advantage before the Eberz sisters began to heat up. Alexis Eberz, a 5’8 junior, averages 18 points per game. She reached 1,000 career points late last month. Kayla Eberz, a versatile 5’10 freshman, provides 13 ppg. Her twin sister, Kelsey, has been out since December with a knee injury. The (19-9) Patriots were in front 27-26 at halftime. Senior guard Olivia Nardi hit a triple from the left corner early in the third quarter. It was her only field goal of the night, and it gave Archbishop Carroll a 32-30 edge. Nardi’s shot from beyond the arc ignited a 17-to-7 run by the Patriots. Hardy drilled a jumper from the right wing at the buzzer to pull Wilson within 46-39 entering the final period. The (20-10) Bulldogs were outscored 14-to-2 over the next eight minutes. They were scoreless until Hardy made two free throws with 4:21 remaining. The Patriots were in control 52-41 at that point. Archbishop Carroll sealed the deal at the foul line. The Patriots finished 14-for-17, including 8-for-10 in the fourth quarter. Wilson ended up 4-of-5 from the stripe. Laura Crocona chipped in with eight points. The 5’8 junior sank two of the Bulldogs’ five treys. Alexis Eberz, who poured in 23 points, gave credit to the Bulldogs. “They’re a great team. We knew that coming into this game. They play really great defense,” she said. Kayla Eberz contributed 18 points, including 13 in the second half. Sophomore Abbie McFillin added nine points. Archbishop Carroll was able to create turnovers which led to easy transition opportunities after halftime. The Patriots won the PIAA-6A championship two years ago. They’re moving on to the quarterfinals on Friday against Central Dauphin. Wilson saw its season come to an end. The Bulldogs, who finished fifth in the District 3 tournament, didn’t have any seniors in the starting lineup. They also played this entire season without two-time All-County point guard Laila Jones. The 5’8 junior was out with a torn ACL. Jones averaged 16 ppg. last year. “I thought it was a great season overall, really proud of this group. They’ve dealt with adversity all year. They kept trusting each other. They kept putting winning first,” remarked Raquet. He said he’s excited for his second season in West Lawn.

Reading-Archbishop Wood Preview https://berkssportsreport.com/reading-archbishop-wood-preview/ Sat, 12 Mar 2022 11:18:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=2597 Reading and Archbishop Wood will square off this weekend for the second time this season, but now it’s win or go home. The (26-3) Red Knights battle the (18-7) Vikings in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs. Due to a snow storm, the highly anticipated matchup was postponed until Sunday at 1pm at Easton Middle School.

Reading defeated Wood 64-58 on January 22nd at the Geigle Complex. Ruben Rodriguez led the way with 19 points. Daniel Alcantara and Myles Grey had 15 apiece. Alcantara broke his left hand after a dunk against Wilson in the District 3 quarterfinals on February 25th. The 6’5 forward ended his career with 1,056 points. Alcantara was a third team all-state selection last year. Jalil Bethea scored a team-high 13 points in the late January loss to the Red Knights. The 6’4 sophomore guard dropped 23 on Plymouth-Whitemarsh in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs. Bethea knocked down four 3-pointers.

Reading is riding an eight-game winning streak. The Red Knights captured their 24th Berks Conference championship by defeating Berks Catholic for the third time this season. They went on to claim their record 23rd District 3 title with a 68-43 rout of Warwick at the Giant Center in Hershey. Reading took care of Downingtown West 56-42 in the first round of the state tournament. Rodriguez erupted for 23 points, increasing his career total to 1,270. The 6’1 junior is the top scorer in Berks County at nearly 20 points per game. He was named first team all-state last year. Grey provided eleven points vs. the Whippets. The 5’11 junior has hit 56 triples this season, third-most in the Berks Conference. Seniors Joey Chapman and Xavier Davis play much bigger than their size. Chapman set a career-high with 19 points in the District 3 Final. The Red Knights are the highest-scoring team in the county at just under 71 points per game.

Archbishop Wood is from the rugged Philadelphia Catholic League which produces multiple Division I players every year. John Mosco’s squad finished third in the league standings with an (11-2) mark. The Vikings fell to Archbishop Ryan 74-73 in the PCL quarterfinals. Justin Moore leads Wood in points (16), assists (6), and steals (2) per game. The 6’2 senior guard is committed to Drexel. He reached 1,000 points early last month. Moore is a first team All-Catholic League pick. This is his third school in as many years. Moore attended Cheltenham for his freshman and sophomore years. He then transferred to Bishop McDevitt in the PCL and averaged 12ppg. as a junior. When that school was closed, Moore took his talents to Wood. Bethea is the Vikings’ second-leading scorer at 13 points a night. He’s connected more than 70 times from beyond the arc. Bethea shoots over 40% from long distance. 6’4 senior Mike Knouse is another threat from downtown. Carson Howard gives Wood an inside presence at 6’7. The junior contributes nine points and eight rebounds per game. Howard is on the second team All-Catholic League roster. Bethea and Bahsil Laster were third team selections. Laster is a 6’4 junior guard who puts up eight points and dishes out four assists a night.

The Vikings are a remarkable (14-2) all-time in the PIAA playoffs. They won the 5A championship in 2017. Wood was a state runner-up last year and in 2019. Reading took home state gold from the Giant Center last season and in 2017 with Lonnie Walker. The Red Knights finished second in 1973 and 1934. They’re (55-42) in the state playoffs.

Reading held off Wood 58-57 in last year’s state final, but these are much different teams. The Vikings lost all five starters to graduation including four Division I players. The Red Knights had to replace rebounding machine Moro Osumanu (West Chester University) and Rene Rodriguez. Plus, Alcantara is out of the lineup with a left hand injury. Head coach Rick Perez is going for win #250 on Sunday. Jim Gano holds the school record with 251 victories. Perez is (249-72) over eleven seasons at Reading.
