All-State Team-Boys Basketball https://berkssportsreport.com/all-state-team-boys-basketball/ Wed, 24 Apr 2024 09:09:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=4192 Two high school basketball players from Berks County were selected to the PA Sports Writers’ All-State team. Reading’s Yadiel Cruz is a first team pick in Class 6A. Kingston McKoy of Berks Catholic was named to the third team in Class 4A.

After averaging 8.5 points as a junior, Cruz led the Berks Conference in scoring at 22 ppg. in the 2023-24 season. The 6’2 guard hit a team-high 48 triples for the Red Knights. He finished with 729 points as a senior, including a career-high 40 in a 71-62 victory over Harrisburg on January 13th. Cruz shot 54% from the field and 38% from beyond the arc, while averaging 7.2 rebounds. In just two years at Reading, he accumulated 1,010 points. Cruz was voted the Berks County Player of the Year in 2024. He also received the Dr. Richard Kleppinger Award from the Reading Berks Basketball Association. The Red Knights won 22 games and reached the state semifinals this season.

McKoy made the All-State squad despite playing in only 14 games. Unfortunately, his season came to an end on January 23rd when he suffered a fractured tibia against Reading. Berks Catholic rallied to win that game 61-59 at Lloyd Wolf Gymnasium. McKoy poured in a career-high 29 points in a thrilling 77-73 overtime victory at Trinity in late December. The 6’2 sophomore guard averaged 15 points this year. He also provided elite defense. McKoy was voted to the All-County team as well. The (23-5) Saints advanced to the second round of the PIAA-4A playoffs.

All-State Boys Basketball https://berkssportsreport.com/all-state-boys-basketball/ Sun, 08 May 2022 10:19:00 +0000 https://berkssportsreport.com/?p=2719 If you had the opportunity to watch the PIAA basketball playoffs, you know that there is a tremendous amount of talent in Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia area, District 12, produces several Division I players each year. Consequently, being recognized as an all-state player in our commonwealth is a great achievement. Three boys basketball players from Berks County received that honor this week.

Ruben Rodriguez of Reading was named first team all-state in Class 6A for the second consecutive season. The 6’1 junior led Berks County in scoring at nearly 20 points per game. He also averaged five assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Rodriguez guided the Red Knights to BCIAA and District 3-6A championships. The electric guard has scored 1,291 career points. He has accumulated 1,003 points over the past two seasons with the Red Knights. Rodriguez has earned the reputation as a clutch performer in big games.

Colin Payne of Exeter was named third team all-state in Class 5A. The 6’3 senior guard finished third in Berks County in scoring at 18 points per game. He knocked down 54 three-pointers this year. Payne helped the Eagles reach the state playoffs for the first time since 1999. They gave Chester a battle before falling 61-52 in the opening round. Payne is a three-sport athlete at Exeter. He was the quarterback of the football team and a starter on the baseball team. Payne threw for a single-season school record 2,363 yards as the Eagles captured their first District 3 title. He’s committed to Alvernia for basketball and football.

Hector Tiburcio of Antietam was named third team all-state in Class 2A for the second straight season. The 6’2 senior was a four-year starter for the Mounts. He ended his career with 1,426 points. Tiburcio led Antietam to the District 3-2A championship game in 2021 and 2022. He averaged 16.5 points this year and helped the Mounts win 20 games.
