Seven teams from Berks County qualified for the District 3 playoffs last year. Wilson, Exeter, and Wyomissing reached the District 3 semifinals in their respective classifications. Berks Catholic advanced to the District 3-3A championship game. Twin Valley made history by winning its first District 3 title and getting all the way to the PIAA-4A Final.

There will be plenty of big games involving Berks County teams once again this fall. Here are a few dates that you may want to circle on the calendar.

Week 1-Friday, August 28th

Wilson at Gov. Mifflin. The Bulldogs and Mustangs square off for the 69th time. Wilson has a (41-27) edge in this intense rivalry.

Wyomissing at Southern Columbia. The Tigers went (15-1) a season ago. Their lone loss was at home to the Spartans 49-27. Southern Columbia went on to claim its 15th state crown by defeating Farrell 43-22 in the PIAA-2A championship.

Week 2

There are a-half dozen games featuring Berks County squads on Thursday, September 3rd. Wyomissing travels to Philadelphia to play Frankford at 3:30pm. Berks Catholic is home against Executive Education Academy at 6pm. Muhlenberg takes on rival Reading at Albright’s Shirk Stadium. Conrad Weiser battles Milton Hershey in Robesonia. Fleetwood visits Upper Perkiomen, Daniel Boone entertains Pottstown, and Kutztown hosts York County Tech.

As for Friday, September 4th, Twin Valley and Susquehanna Township will be in Elverson for a rematch of the District 3-4A final. Wilson hits the road versus C.B. West.

Week 3-Friday, September 11th

Wilson at Muhlenberg. The Bulldogs and Muhls go head-to-head for the first time since 2008.

Exeter at York High.

On Saturday, September 12th, Twin Valley takes on Wyomissing at Bob Wolfrum Field. The Raiders knocked off the Spartans 28-6 last year. It was Twin Valley’s first victory over Wyomissing since 2009.

Week 4-Friday, September 18th

Manheim Township at Wilson. The Blue Streaks left West Lawn with a 20-14 win a season ago to capture the Section 1 title in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.

Week 5-Friday, September 25th

Gov. Mifflin at Exeter. The Eagles are riding a five-game winning streak in this series.

Week 6

Berks Catholic plays the second of its three Thursday night games on October 1st. The Saints head to Annville-Cleona. These were the top two squads in Section 5 of the L-L League in 2025.

Reading at McCaskey on Friday, October 2nd. These programs have met on the gridiron more than one hundred times.

Boyertown at Pope John Paul II. Former Wilson running back Jami Sands led the Bears to the District 1 playoffs for just the third time last year.

Week 7-Friday, October 9th

Twin Valley at Solanco. These teams were (13-0) combined in league play last fall.

Lancaster Catholic at Schuylkill Valley. Bruce Harbach faces the school that he guided to state championships in 2009 and 2011. Harbach was (139-55) over 16 seasons at Lancaster Catholic.

Conestoga Valley at Muhlenberg. The Buckskins earned the Section 2 title in the L-L League a season ago with a perfect regular season.

Wilson at Hempfield.

Week 8-Friday, October 16th

Hamburg at Schuylkill Valley. This will be the 52nd edition of the Frost Bowl. The Panthers hold a slim (26-24-1) advantage in this rivalry along Route 61.

Muhlenberg at Exeter. The Eagles have won twelve consecutive games in this series.

Warwick at Twin Valley.

Week 9-Friday, October 23rd

Twin Valley at Exeter. Enough said.

Wilson at Central York. The Panthers eliminated the Bulldogs 42-7 in the District 3-6A semifinals last year.

Week 10-Friday, October 30th

Exeter at Conestoga Valley. These Section 2 foes have had some epic battles in recent years.

Berks Catholic at Lancaster Catholic.

On Saturday, October 31st, Wyomissing hosts Lampeter-Strasburg. Will this decide the Section 4 title in the L-L League? Keep in mind, Twin Valley is moving up to Section 3 this season.

The Muhls have some new faces who could make an impact this winter. Randy Pichardo-Garcia is a 6’7 rising senior. He averaged 4 points per game at Susquehanna Township last season. Jamaree “Duke” Snuffer was playing for Wyomissing earlier this week in the West Reading Basketball League. The lanky guard is a rising sophomore with a lot of potential. Snuffer and Pichardo-Garcia have been coming off the bench for Muhlenberg at the A’Town Throwdown. The Muhls beat Nazareth 38-31 on Thursday. They took down Lower Merion with an impressive 50-35 victory on Friday night.

Muhlenberg went (16-8) during the 2025-26 campaign. A trio of talented guards will be returning in Laureldale. Eli Hemmings (16 ppg.) LJ Armstrong (13), and Nelson “Coco” Malave (12) each averaged in double figures last season. Josh Miller, an athletic rising junior, is also back in the backcourt. The Muhls reached the BCIAA semifinals before falling to Reading 60-57 at Santander Arena. They were upset in the first round of the District 3-6A playoffs by #13 seed Cedar Crest 66-60 in overtime.

As expected, the West Reading League final was tight from the opening tip until the last minute. Wilson and Cedar Crest were knotted at 10-10 after the first quarter. Colin Legath hit a 3-pointer from the left wing before the buzzer to put Wilson in front 20-18 at halftime. The rising sophomore hit three triples and finished with a team-high eleven points.

Cedar Crest was within 31-30 after the third quarter. Point guard Nechar Mercado had a nifty pass to Gabe Nyembo for a layup with 4:35 left. The 6’5 Nyembo gave Wilson a 36-32 edge. He ended up with eight points and Mercado chipped in with seven. Jaiden Whitehurst, a physical rising sophomore, added nine points.

Jaden Truss, a 6’3 rising sophomore, responded with a key 3-pointer from the left wing. That sparked a 11-0 run for Cedar Crest. A transition bucket by Antonio Tirado made it 39-36 with 3:02 remaining. Tirado and Truss contributed ten points apiece. The score remained 39-36 for the next two and a-half minutes. Truss went 0-for-2 at the free throw line with 33 seconds to go which kept it a one possession game. Whitehurst attempted a 3-pointer, but Jemar Pauleus blocked the shot and scored on a fast break for a 41-36 advantage. Steven Reyes tacked on a layup at the buzzer for a 43-36 victory. The rising junior guard had seven points in a balanced attack for Cedar Crest. “We were able to get defensive stops and get out and play in transition. That’s our best style of play. Slow us up and we struggle,” explained Smith. Wilson was outscored 13-to-5 in the fourth quarter.

Pauleus, a 6’2 guard, provided a game-high 13 points. The rising junior averaged 16.8 points during the 2025-26 season. “He’s a special, special kid. I think when he graduates from Cedar Crest, he’ll be our all-time leading scorer. He does so much else than just score the ball. His vision is great. The sky is the limit, he’s got a great work ethic,” said Smith. Pauleus took home the Terry Brennan Memorial Most Outstanding Player Award.

It was a fun night for Cedar Crest as Reyes was named the MVP of the Kyle Conrad Memorial All-Star Game. The West Reading League recognized its standout players at halftime of the all-star game on Thursday. Nyembo earned the Woozy Smith Memorial Most Improved Player Award. Brady Eisenhower of Wyomissing was selected for the Bill Snider Best Defensive Player Award.

Smith was glad that he brought his team back to the West Reading League. “I love this league. We got away from it, not too sure why. I felt like we really had a good team to compete this year,” replied Smith. He added, “Playing against all these Berks County teams really sets the tone for the season, and lets you see where the heck are you at. I think it was great for us.”

Wilson, sponsored by Apella Wealth, and Berks Catholic, sponsored by Berks Packing, squared off in the second semifinal. Carmelo Harper, Berks Catholic’s top player, arrived late and Snip Esterly’s team struggled in the first half. They were limited to five points in the opening quarter. Wilson built a 20-7 cushion in the second period and led 25-13 at halftime. Jaiden Whitehurst, a rising sophomore who also plays football, set the tone with his physicality. He scored seven of his game-high 13 points in the first quarter. Wilson was in front 31-25 after the third period. Berks Catholic continued to battle and got within 31-29 early in the fourth quarter. They trailed 33-31 with two and a-half minutes on the clock. Wilson sealed the win with a 8-to-2 run. Gabe Nyembo grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a three-point play with 51 seconds left. The 6’4 rising junior gave Wilson a 40-31 edge. He ended up with eight points in Wilson’s 41-33 victory. Kaler Cornish provided six points. Luke Linderman had a team-high twelve points for Berks Catholic. It was a quiet night for Harper who scored seven points. Johnny Giesa added six points.

Wilson will face Cedar Crest at 5:25pm on Thursday for the West Reading League title. The All-Star Game will follow the championship game.

West Lawn had its ace available for Monday’s game and Ben Kulp went the distance. The West Chester commit allowed four runs, all unearned, on six hits. He struck out six and walked two over seven innings. “He doesn’t let anything bother him. He’s a very calm pitcher. If he walks somebody, it’s not a big deal. He regroups and he makes quality pitches when he needs to make quality pitches,” explained Spatz. Kulp also helped himself by going 3-for-5 and driving in a run. He was an All-State pick for Wilson this spring. All nine batters in the Owls’ lineup had at least one hit. Alex Ernesto and Zach Troutman each finished with a pair of singles. Tyler Herbein went 1-for-1 with three walks. The catcher had 2 RBI.

Kulp got West Lawn on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with a RBI double to right-center. An error on a grounder to second base made it 2-0. The (21-5) Owls doubled their lead in the second inning. Aiden Incledon’s ground ball got past the third baseman allowing two runs to score with two outs. West Lawn went in front 5-0 in the third thanks to Herbein’s bloop RBI single to center.

The Owls blew it open with five runs on three hits and an error in the fourth. Ernesto’s line drive single to center made it 6-0. Alex Frantz grounded out to shortstop to add another run. Ernesto scored on a double steal for a 8-0 advantage. Cole Sensenig followed with a RBI single through the left side. That ended the day for Reading pitcher David Garcia. He was charged with ten runs, four earned, on nine hits. Garcia had two strikeouts and three walks in 3.2 innings. Frandy Ruiz took over on the mound and gave up a RBI single to Jack Gabel which put West Lawn on top 10-0.

The Groundhogs took advantage of a dropped fly ball in shallow left field to score four runs in the fifth. Victor Mejia provided a two-run double on a long fly ball to left-center. Janser Paredes ripped a two-run single to left that got Reading within 10-4. All four runs came with two outs. Mejia and Paredes each went 2-for-3. Paredes, an East Stroudsburg commit, was a two-time All-State selection for Reading High. Herbein walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth to give the Owls a 11-4 lead. Ruiz gave up one run on three hits and four walks in 1.1 innings.

The Groundhogs’ season came to an end, while West Lawn improved to (5-0) in the double-elimination tournament. The Owls allowed a total of just seven runs. They shut out Shillington 1-0 on Thursday and blanked Boyertown 3-0 on Saturday. West Lawn defeated Norchester 7-2 on Sunday. The Owls advanced to the Region 2 tournament which begins Friday at Quakertown. “It’s gonna be a tough regional…it’s all about executing. It’s all about making pitches, playing defense, and timely hitting. I’m excited for our team. I think the expectations are high,” said Spatz.

Sheerin graduated from Exeter High School, just an hour from Philadelphia. As a senior, he piled up a staggering 101 strikeouts in 46.1 innings. Sheerin (7-3, 2.27) only allowed 19 hits and was voted to the All-County team in 2023. He led the Eagles to a 4-1 upset of second-seeded Gov. Mifflin in the opening round of the District 3-5A playoffs. Sheerin gave up one hit over 6.1 innings with eleven strikeouts.

Despite his size and statistics, Sheerin wasn’t heavily recruited out of high school. He attended Mount St. Mary’s and was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year in 2024. Sheerin set school records for strikeouts (109) and opponents’ batting average (.197). He made 18 appearances, including a pair of starts as a freshman. Sheerin only gave up 49 hits in 70 innings with a 4.76 ERA.

After transferring to LSU, Sheerin suffered a torn ACL while playing basketball during the summer. He missed the 2025 season with the Tigers. Sheerin worked exclusively out of the bullpen this spring. In 20 appearances, he racked up 58 strikeouts over 37.2 frames. Sheerin (3-2, 4.78) allowed 30 hits and earned five saves. “My delivery is very different and creates a lot of swing and miss. My fastball is my strength, but it’s my passion to compete that I think really makes the difference,” he replied. Sheerin’s massive frame and unique crossfire arm motion make him an intriguing prospect. He features a fastball in the mid-to-high 90s and a slider. “I want Phillies’ fans to know that every time I get to put on that uniform, it means the world to me,” emphasized Sheerin.

Morrow guided the Raiders to the District 3 semifinals for the first time in 2017. They returned to the Class 5A semifinals in 2018 and 2019. Peyton McDaniel led them to the District 3 championship game for the first time in 2020. Twin Valley came up short against Gettysburg 46-40 in the final. The Raiders went (121-45) in six seasons with Morrow at the helm.

McDaniel finished with a school-record 2,102 points. The 6’ guard went on to score 2,325 points at James Madison. She averaged 18.8 points and 7.5 rebounds this year.

Morrow graduated from Holy Family University in Philadelphia in 1990. He was a four-year starter and four-year captain on the basketball team. Morrow ended up with 1,325 career points.

He was an assistant coach for the Holy Family women’s basketball team from 1995-2005. The Tigers had an outstanding record of (349-54) during that decade. Morrow then made the transition to the high school level. He was the boys basketball head coach at Twin Valley from 2007-2011. The Raiders were (32-57) over those four seasons.

Matt Hahn served as Twin Valley’s girls basketball coach for the past two years. The Raiders went (10-13) during the 2025-26 campaign. They came in second place in Division 2 behind Exeter. The third-seeded Eagles beat the Raiders 47-36 in the BCIAA quarterfinals.

Hailey Kilgore, an All-County selection, will continue her career at Shippensburg. She surpassed 1,000 points at Twin Valley. Her younger sister, Olivia, will be back next season along with Lauren Williams. They were both voted to the all-division team this year.
